The Alien MEGAPACK®: 25 Modern and Classic Science Fiction Stories by Tim Sullivan,Jerome Bixby,Lester del Rey,John Gregory Betancourt,Richard Wilson Pdf

Aliens have been a major theme in science fiction literature from the very beginnings of the genre...though they seem to have morphed over the decades from humanoids (six-limbed and blue though they might be!) to the utterly incomprehensible to noncorporeal energy beings -- and everything in between! This collection focuses on aliens as depicted in many different forms over many different decades. While in no way comprehensive -- I'm not sure a "definitive" book of alien stories could ever be assembled -- we think this one is, at the very least, a lot of fun. Included are: THROUGH MUD ONE PICKS A WAY, by Tim Sullivan LABORATORY, by Jerome Bixby BEULAH, by Talmage Powell ALIEN STILL LIFE, by John Gregory Betancourt DEAD RINGER, by Lester del Rey ESCAPE TO EARTH, by Manly Banister LESSON IN SURVIVAL, by Frank Belknap Long SCIENTIFIC METHOD, by Chad Oliver THE BEES OF DEATH, by Robert Moore Williams THE BIG FIX, by Richard Wilson THE CARNIVORE, by Katherine MacLean THE LARGE ANT, by Howard Fast "THIS WORLD IS OURS!" by Emil Petaja RAINBOW JADE, by Gardner E. The 8th Ghost Story MEGAPACK® by Talmage Powell,Phyllis Ann Karr,Stephen Wasylyk,Mary Elizabeth Counselman,Wallace West,Charlotte Brontë,H. G. Wells,Mary Elizabeth Braddon,J. Sheridan Le Fanu,Arthur Conan Doyle,George MacDonald Pdf

We love ghost stories here at Wildside Press—witness the fact that we have now now reached our eighth volume in this series. Very few other genres are so versatile and enduring as tales of the supernatural. Ghosts can (and have) appeared in literature for thousands of years, in all countries and continents (and times past, present, and future) throughout the world. But the Victorian era particularly seemed to embrace ghost stories, and that’s when Christmas ghost tales became not just a staple of literature, but a requirement. Seemingly all British fiction magazines (and many newspapers) had to publish at least one ghostly tale in the month of December. Proving that the ghost story tradition is strong to the present day, we have an original story from Phyllis Ann Karr (author of the Frostflower and Thorn series), plus two drawn from Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine (which strayed a little more into the fantastic and horrific in the 1960s that it does today), plus another modern story by Wallace West, who is best known as a science fiction writer. Good stuff. Here is the complete lineup: UNSEEN—UNFEARED, by Francis Stevens RUNNING WOLF, by Algernon Blackwood UNCLE CHRISTIAN’S INHERITANCE, by Erckmann-Chatrian MOMMY, by Mary Elizabeth Counselman A GHOST’S REVENGE, by Tighe Hopkins THE HAUNTED HOUSE, by George MacDonald THE THING IN THE UPPER ROOM, by Arthur Morrison DIE, GEORGE!, by Stephen Wasylyk HEINRICH, by Wallace West RESURGAM, by Rina Ramsay THE SPECTRE OF TAPPINGTON, by Thomas Ingoldsby THE INEXPERIENCED GHOST, by H. G. Wells THE SECOND MRS. RANDLEMAN, by Talmage Powell THE SILVER MIRROR, by Arthur Conan Doyle WHILE THE PASSENGERS SLEPT, by Edgar Wallace THE WARNING LIGHT, by Phyllis Ann Karr NAPOLEON AND THE SPECTRE, by Charlotte Brontë THE COLD EMBRACE, by Mary Elizabeth Braddon THE PHIAL OF DREAD, by Fitz Hugh Ludlow SOME STRANGE DISTURBANCES IN AUNGIER STREET, by J. Sheridan Le Fanu THE OLD NURSE’S STORY by Mrs. Gaskell THE FOUR-FIFTEEN EXPRESS, by Amelia B. Edwards THE SECRET OF THE STRADIVARIUS, by Hugh Conway MR. The Classic Horror Stories by H. P. Lovecraft Pdf

'Loathsomeness waits and dreams in the deep, and decay spreads over the tottering cities of men. A time will come - but I must not and cannot think!' H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) was a reclusive scribbler of horror stories for the American pulp magazines that specialized in Gothic and science fiction in the interwar years. He often published in Weird Tales and has since become the key figure in the slippery genre of 'weird fiction'. Lovecraft developed an extraordinary vision of feeble men driven to the edge of sanity by glimpses of malign beings that have survived from human prehistory or by malevolent extra-terrestrial visitations. The ornate language of his stories builds towards grotesque moments of revelation, quite unlike any other writer. This new selection brings together nine of his classic tales, focusing on the 'Cthulhu Mythos', a cycle of stories that develops the mythology of the Old Ones, the monstrous creatures who predate human life on earth. It includes the Introduction from Lovecraft's critical essay, 'Supernatural Horror in Literature', in which he gave his own important definition of 'weird fiction'. In a fascinating contextual introduction, Roger Luckhurst gives Lovecraft the attention he deserves as a writer who used pulp fiction to explore a remarkable philosophy that shockingly dethrones the mastery of man.

The Hour of the Dragon (Conan the Conqueror) As an added bonus, also included in the set are: Cimmeria-A Poem The Hyborian Age-Conan's World (This is Howard's background essay on the world of Conan) The stories in this collection are ordered roughly in chronological order from Conan's first adventures as a young mercenary adventurer and thief to his final epic clashes as a king and are based on the Rippke chronology. About Conan: Conan the Barbarian (also known as Conan the Cimmerian) is a fictional sword and sorcery hero who originated in pulp fiction magazines and has since been adapted to books, comics, several films (including Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer), television programs (cartoon and live-action), video games, role-playing games and other media. The character was created by writer Robert E. Howard in 1932 via a series of fantasy stories published in Weird Tales magazine. Conan the Character: Conan is a Cimmerian. From Robert E. Howard's writings (The Hyborian Age among others) it is known that the Cimmerians were based on the Celts or Gaels. He was born on a battlefield and is the son of a village blacksmith. Conan matured quickly as a youth and, by age fifteen, he was already a respected warrior who had participated in the destruction of the Aquilonian outpost of Venarium. After its demise, he was struck by wanderlust and began the adventures chronicled by Howard, encountering skulking monsters, evil wizards, tavern wenches, and beautiful princesses. He roamed throughout the Hyborian Age nations as a thief, outlaw, mercenary, and pirate. As he grew older, he began commanding larger units of men and escalating his ambitions. In his forties, he seized the crown of the tyrannical king of Aquilonia, the most powerful kingdom of the Hyborian Age, having strangled the previous ruler on the steps of the throne. Conan's adventures often result in him performing heroic feats, though his motivation for doing so is largely to protect his own survival or for personal gain.
