The Diseases of Personality (Classic Reprint) by Théodule Ribot Pdf

Excerpt from The Diseases of Personality But before we begin the exposition and interpretation of the facts, it will be well to have an understanding as to the nature of consciousness. I do not propose to write a monograph on consciousness, for that would cover pretty nearly the whole neid of psychology; it will be enough to state the problem with precision. Diseases of Personality (Classic Reprint) by Théodule Ribot Pdf

Excerpt from Diseases of Personality It will be necessary, even at the risk of increasing the already extant confusion, to investigate what teratical, morbid, or simply rare, cases can teach us concerning the formation and disorganization of per sonality, yet without assuming to treat the subject in its totality. Personality being the highest form of psychic in dividuality, there arises the preliminary question What is the individual? There are few problems that in our time have been more discussed among natural scientists, or remain more obscure in regard to the lower degrees of animal existence. This is not the right moment to speak of it in detail. At the close of this work, after studying the constitutive elements of personality, we shall consider it in its totality. Then will occur the time, to compare it with the lower forms, through which nature has essayed to produce it, and to show, that the psychic individual is the expression of an organism; in conformity with the latter, it is either low, simple, incoherent, or complex and unified. Diseases of Memory, Diseases of the Will, and Diseases of Personality (Classic Reprint) by Théodule Ribot Pdf

Excerpt from Diseases of Memory, Diseases of the Will, and Diseases of Personality Before we come to organic memory itself, we must note certain phenomena that have sometimes been compared to it. Authors have found analogues of memory in the inor ganic world, and particularly in the prop erry possessed by light-vibrations, whereby they may be stored up on a sheet of paper, and there persist, for a longer or shorter time, in the state of. Latent vibrations, ready to reappear at the summons of a developing agent. Engravings exposed to the sun's'ra s and then kept in a dark place, can mont s afterward, by the aid of appropriate re agents, reveal persistent traces of the photo graphic action of the sun upon their surface. Lay a key upon a sheet of white paper, and expose the two to the direct rays of the sun; then lay the paper away in a drawer, and years afterward the spectral image of the key will be visible} In our opinion these and other like facts bear too remote an analogy to memory to merit being cited. In them we find the first condition of all recollection, namely, the retention of the im pression, but that is all we find, for here the reproduction of the impression is in such a degree passive, and dependent on the inter vention of an outside agency, that it bears no resemblance to the natural reproduction of memory. Furthermore, with regard to the matter before us, we must never forget that we have to do with the laws of life, not with physical laws, and that the foundations of memory must be sought in the properties of organized matter and not elsewhere. It will be seen later that they who overlook this fall into errors. Neither will I dwell upon certain hab its of plants, that have been compared to memory: I hasten to deal with facts of a more decisive character.1. A Practical Guide to Rabbinic Counseling by Rabbi Yisrael N. Levitz, PhD,Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski, MD Pdf

Provides the requisite knowledge and practical guidelines for some of the most common counseling situations. Today's rabbis, in addition to being spiritual leaders of their congregations, are also expected to be competent counselors to members of their community. Yet rabbis often feel inadequately prepared for the difficult challenges of their counseling role. To many, rabbinic counseling appears deceptively simple, requiring no more than good intuition, fair judgment and sincere empathy. Good counseling, in reality, is a complex process requiring a combination of knowledge, skill, self-awareness and an understanding of human dynamics. This groundbreaking book—written specifically for community rabbis and religious counselors—reflects the wisdom of seasoned professionals, who provide clear guidelines and sensible strategies for effective rabbinic counseling.

Binet, and those who are acquainted with the outlines of the theory of the Nancy school, who make so much of suggestion, will be able to see how strong the case may be made against that point of view. Theories aside, moreover, the reader - be he psychologist, medical man, a mem ber only of the intelligent public - will value the collected resources here presented for the study of the subject and admire the candour and ability with which the author has marshalled them.
