History of Louisiana, from Its First Discovery and Settlement to the Present Time (Classic Reprint) by E. Bunner Pdf

Excerpt from History of Louisiana, From Its First Discovery and Settlement to the Present Time Louisiana having been formerly connected with Canada and the northern parts of America while they were under the dominion of France, it seems proper to take some notice of the early settlements in those extensive countries. In 1504, within seven years of the discovery Of the Con tinent, the mariners of Brittany resorted to New foundland for the purpose of fishing. The island of Cape Breton received its name from them; and in France they were generally regarded as the discoverers of the country, though it could not be denied that the Cabots had first visited it. Zebulon Pike by George R. Matthews Pdf

Through careful examination of primary documents, this book reveals that the true purpose of Zebulon Pike's western expedition in 1806–1807 was not innocent exploration of the West but an espionage mission in preparation for an American invasion of New Mexico. In 1806, the United States was on the brink of war with Spain over the disputed western boundary of the Louisiana Purchase and anticipated invading New Mexico. Possessing only meager information on the terrain as well as Spanish troop numbers and fortifications, President Thomas Jefferson and General James Wilkinson needed an agent who could cross the continent to Spanish territory all the way to the capital of Santa Fe, provide a plausible "cover story" for being there, and return with the vital information. Zebulon Pike: Thomas Jefferson's Agent for Empire is the story of how Pike carried out his mission as a prelude to an American invasion of New Mexico. This unique book is the first to fully chronicle Pike's 1806–1807 expedition to the Rocky Mountains and beyond, addressing both the exploratory and the clandestine purposes of Pike's western journey. By carefully examining the evidence available in primary documents, which shows that Pike prepared and carried a map showing a route to Santa Fe on his journey, the author overturns the conventional wisdom that Pike became lost searching for the Red River and mistakenly wandered into Spanish territory. This book also presents the Spanish perspective and response to Pike's invasion of Spanish territory and provides historical context to understand the role of Pike's expedition in Thomas Jefferson's quest to build an American "empire for liberty."

Historical Address on the Early Exploration and Settlement of the Mississippi Valley by C. C. Parry Pdf

Excerpt from Historical Address on the Early Exploration and Settlement of the Mississippi Valley: Delivered in Davenport, Iowa, January 21st 1873 The country we now occupy on this western bank of the Mississippi, and of which, as American citizens, we are justly proud, has not descended to us as a rich inheritance from a venerable and time-honored ancestry. By an historic movement grander than that of the Jewish Exodus, and an irruption that throws into the shade the Norman conquest, we are the present the present century, and within the memory of living men, this Trans-Mississippi region has borne the name of a French, monarch and acknowledged the sovereignty of a Spanish king. Through what series of changes the present state of things, as now passing before our eyes, has been brought about, would seem not altogether devoid of interest to us, the now living actors, and will be of not less interest to those who shall come after us. Desirous to contribute something, however meagre, to this historic fund, I have endeavoured to bring together, in chronological order, some of the principal events in the early exploration and settlement of the Mississippi Valley, and to weave into my narrative such incidents as I have been able to gather up from the limited sources at my command, having any direct reference to our local history. The Louisiana Purchase by Alva Adams Pdf

Excerpt from The Louisiana Purchase: And Its First Explorer, Zebulon Montgomery Pike At the opening of the nineteenth century Europe was one vast military camp. Upon the crimson crest of revolution Napoleon had ridden into power. The destinies of France were placed in his hands; and he led the devoted nation where he willed. The ambitious Corsican aimed not alone to control the nations of the old world, but he dreamed as well of empire in the new land that lay beyond the western sea. The gateway to the interior of the American continent was guarded by a French city. Over two centuries before, French explorers had driven the prows of their adventurous ships upon the coast of Louisiana, and in her soil planted a mighty cross and to it nailed the arms of France. Until 1762 the Lilies of France guided the infant destinies of the forest empire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Brief History of the Louisiana Territory (Classic Reprint) by Walter Robinson Smith Pdf

Excerpt from Brief History of the Louisiana Territory The extraordinary revival of interest in all sorts of information regarding the Louisiana Purchase calls for a historical manual, brief, accurate, and readable, which the extensive literature of the Territory docs not at present contain. This volume is an attempt to supply such a want. It consists of the revised copy of four lectures delivered before the Washington University Association on the Mary Hemenway Foundation. The author lays no claim to exhaustive use of original sources but has examined the wide range of literature touching upon the history of the Purchase Territory and accepted well authenticated facts wherever found. Special acknowledgments of aid and kindness are due to Miss Louise Dalton in charge of the Missouri Historical Society Library, 1600 Locust Street, and to Dean Marshall S. Snow and Chancellor Winfield S. Chaplin of Washington University. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
