The Early Life of John Howard Payne by Willis T. Hanson Jr. Pdf

Excerpt from The Early Life of John Howard Payne: With Contemporary Letters Heretofore Unpublished My interest in the early life of John Howard Payne dates from the day when chance threw into my possession a volume of letters concerning which Payne wrote as follows: - London, August 20, 1819. I have determined this day to begin and transcribe in as regular succession as possible all the copies of letters now in my possession, although there are many which can serve no purpose but that of recalling the recollection of events by which they were produced. While several of the volumes containing his letters after 1819 have for some time been known, the first and most important seems to have escaped even the most energetic of Payne's biographers. Transcribed with the greatest amount of care and neatness, these early letters form a volume which is truly unique. It is Payne's own story of his life, his struggles, his thoughts and his ambitions during that period of which heretofore so much has been guessed at, and so little known. The Payne-Butrick Papers, Volumes 4, 5, 6 by John Howard Payne,Daniel Sabin Butrick Pdf

This landmark two-volume set is the richest and most important extant collection of information about traditional Cherokee culture. Because many of the Cherokees own records were lost during their forced removal to the west, the Payne-Butrick Papers are the most detailed written source about the Cherokee Nation during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In the 1830s John Howard Payne, a respected author, actor, and playwright, and Daniel S. Butrick, an American Board missionary, hastened to gather information on Cherokee life and history, fearing that the cultural knowledge would be lost forever. Butrick, who was conversant with the Cherokees culture and language after having spent decades among them, recorded what elderly Cherokees had to say about their lives. The collection also contains much of the Cherokee leaders correspondence, which had been given to Payne for safekeeping. This amazing repository of information covers nearly all aspects of traditional Cherokee culture and history, including politics, myths, early and later religious beliefs, rituals, marriage customs, ball play, language, dances, and attitudes toward children. It will inform our understanding and appreciation of the history and enduring legacy of the Cherokees.

Thomas Abthorpe Cooper by F. Arant Maginnes Pdf

This is the biography of Thomas Abthorpe Cooper, the first star of the American stage. Cooper was the chief transitional figure between the British and American stage and contributed greatly to the development of American theatre. For the 30 years after 1797, Cooper performed in the major cities and toured to every state in the Union. This work covers his entire life and career from his birth outside London in 1775, to his famed performance to celebrate the opening of the City of Washington in 1800, to his death in Bristol, Pennsylvania, in 1849. Much research is drawn from Mr. Cooper’s letters to his mentor, English radical philosopher William Godwin. Throughout, there are descriptions of his principal portrayals at different stages drawn from contemporary accounts and theatrical reviews. There are also 22 illustrations, from paintings and engravings to playbills and photographs of the sites associated with the actor.
