The Ecology of Stream and Riparian Habitats of the Great Basin Region by G. Wayne Minshall,Sherman E. Jensen,William S. Platts Pdf

The purposes of this document are to provide a geographical overview of the Great Basin environment and to provide more resolute descriptions of the ecological features of riparian and stream habitats. The overview is focused on the environmental parameters that influence the distribution, magnitude, flux, and qualities of surface water. The distribution, structure, composition, and dynamics of riparian and stream habitats are interpreted as a response to geologic, hydrologic, geomorphic, pedogenic, and biotic processes. The values of stream and riparian habitats are considered to be a measure of the relative effectiveness of these same processes in determining the qualities of each site.

Riparian Areas by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology,Water Science and Technology Board,Committee on Riparian Zone Functioning and Strategies for Management Pdf

The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Managing for Enhancement of Riparian and Wetland Areas of the Western United States by David A. Koehler Pdf

This annotated bibliography contains 1,905 citations from professional journals, symposia, workshops, proceedings, technical reports, and other sources. The intent of this compilation was to: (1) assemble, to the extent possible, all available and accessible publications relating to riparian management within a single source or document; (2) provide managers, field biologists, researchers, and others, a point of access for locating scientific literature relevent to their specific interest; and (3) provide, under one cover, a comprehensive collection of annotated publications that could dessiminate basic information relative to the status of our knowledge.

Monitoring Wilderness Stream Ecosystems by Anonim Pdf

A protocol and methods for monitoring the major physical, chemical, and biological components of stream ecosystems are presented. The monitoring protocol is organized into four stages. At stage 1 information is obtained on a basic set of parameters that describe stream ecosystems. Each following stage builds upon stage 1 by increasing the number of parameters and the detail and frequency of the measurements. Stage 4 supplements analyses of stream biotic structure with measurements of stream function: carbon and nutrient processes. Standard methods are presented that were selected or modified through extensive field application for use in remote settings.
