Poverty in the Philippines by Asian Development Bank Pdf

Against the backdrop of the global financial crisis and rising food, fuel, and commodity prices, addressing poverty and inequality in the Philippines remains a challenge. The proportion of households living below the official poverty line has declined slowly and unevenly in the past four decades, and poverty reduction has been much slower than in neighboring countries such as the People's Republic of China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Economic growth has gone through boom and bust cycles, and recent episodes of moderate economic expansion have had limited impact on the poor. Great inequality across income brackets, regions, and sectors, as well as unmanaged population growth, are considered some of the key factors constraining poverty reduction efforts. This publication analyzes the causes of poverty and recommends ways to accelerate poverty reduction and achieve more inclusive growth. it also provides an overview of current government responses, strategies, and achievements in the fight against poverty and identifies and prioritizes future needs and interventions. The analysis is based on current literature and the latest available data, including the 2006 Family Income and Expenditure Survey.

Social Impact of the Global Financial Crisis in the Philippines by Arsenio M. Balisacan Pdf

Anecdotal evidence permeates accounts on the impact of the global economic crisis on Philippine poverty. This study systematically assesses the evidence and recent data. It adopts a somewhat eclectic approach as applying regression and decomposition techniques to trace the impact of the global economic crisis on gross domestic product and its major components, constructing panel data from nationally representative household surveys to trace the changes in household welfare during the crisis, and combining national income accounts and household survey data to simulate the differential effects of the crisis across population groups and social divides. Empirical findings suggest that although the Philippine economy did not slide to recession during the crisis, its impact on the economy and poverty across population groups was nonetheless severe---and may linger for many years to come.

GDP and Wellbeing. The Disconnect in the Philippines by Anthony Betia Pdf

Academic Paper from the year 2023 in the subject Sociology - Economy and Industry, grade: 1,0, University of Asia and the Pacific, course: Master of Science in Management, language: English, abstract: This paper asks the question of the connection between the GDP and well-being. Is the GDP a good measure of the quality of life in a country? The author first defines the concept of the GDP and explains, how it is composed. He argues here that numbers are a very powerful tool when it comes to making sense of the world. However, there are also disadvantages to solely relying on the GDP to give information about the general economic situation of a country. For example, compared to its counterpart, GNI (gross national income), the GDP is only limited to the production of goods and services within its borders and does not account for revenue-generating activities abroad. However, one of the biggest limitations is that it does not measure inequality in society. In the second part of his paper, the author focuses on the divergence between the economic wealth of a country and the wellbeing of the majority of its citizens. To further showcase this disconnect, the paper discusses the two examples of Dubai and the Philippines. One concept that is here introduced by the author is that of inclusion - a state in which the economical gains and opportunities are shared by the entire population.

Nationalist Economics by Alejandro Lichauco,Tatay Jobo Elizes Pub. Pdf

PREFACE The nation is undergoing a socioeconomic crisis whose intensity and complexity are without precedent, and this book has been written for those who wish to understand the origin and nature of that crisis in layman's terms and who are seeking for ways and means out of that crisis, also in layman's terms. The understanding of that crisis need not and should not be confined to economists, and the fundamentals underlying it should be placed within the grasp of every Filipino, even of those who have not had the benefit of a formal course in economics. Just as politics is too important to be left to politicians, interest in the nation's economic situation, and the formulation of the appropriate solutions, should not be confined to economists because the crisis affects the life and well-being of everyone. It is a crisis which in fact threatens the very survival of the Philippines as a nation-state. Too oflen our crisis is perceived by the layman as a moral one because it has been generally explained primarily in terms of a corrupt government, a corrupt bureaucracy, of corrupt cronies and corrupt presidential relatives. But if this were so, if the crisis is fundamentally a function of corruption, how explain that in countries where corruption is equally rampant, considerable economic progress has been made, and continues to be experienced? America's period of accelerated growth and economic take-off coincided with the rise and rule of her robber barons, while the accomplishments of Marxist states have been brought about by overcentralized bureaucracies plagued by the cronyism and corruption which such bureaucracies bring in their wake. The robber barons of America did not prevent her from becoming the most affluent state in the world, and the corruption of her bureaucracy has not prevented the Soviet Union from becoming a formidable industrial and military power. The bureaucracies and political systems of virtually all nations in Asia have long been notorious for their pervasive and intractable venality, but virtually every state in Asia today is on the move, at least in economic terms, posting historic achievements that are conspicuously altering for the better the material condition of peoples. While the Philippines decays. Not long from now, social historians will be explaining why a country flaunted as uthe only Christian nation in Asia" is the most impoverished in the region. The Philippine case is making Christianity, at least in Asia, synonymous with backwardness and poverty. The truth, however, is that the Philippine crisis represents a derangement, not so much of the moral order, as of developmental policy. This book suggests why. Its central theme is that the failure of policy, from which the crisis essentially stems, is due to the fact that policy has ignored the country's vital requirements as a nation-state, and even collides with those requirements. Philippine development policy has been tailored to meet the strategic needs of external interests which profit from the country's situation as a social organism saddled with an economy that belongs to a distant, pre-industrial age. They are forces which profit from the Philippine status quo. To the extent that this fatal misorientation of policy is a result of ignorance on the part of Filipino functionaries responsible for the country's policy, it reflects what nationalist historian Constantino has described as the "miseducation of the Filipino." To the extent that it is a function of conscious error, then it reflects something more sinister and deadlier than corrup- tion. But whatever it is of which we speak, the truth, in its entirety and as one perceives it, must be told. For in that lies freedom. ALEJANDRO LICHAUCO November 21, 1988 Quezon City

Economic Conditions in the Philippines by Hugo H. Miller Pdf

Excerpt from Economic Conditions in the Philippines This book is written for beginners in the study of economic conditions in the Philippines. Its object is to explain the economic position of the Filipinos in their own Islands and in the world in general, and to state, analyze, and discuss economic conditions found here. Theoretic economics enter into this discussion only as subordinate to and explanatory of actual fact. It is believed that this study will give to students an idea of actual economic conditions existing in the Philippines and a comparative idea of those found in other countries, and at the same time will result in a knowledge of the natural laws upon which all economic discussion and reasoning must be based. Throughout the book the data obtained from special economic reports by teachers are presented in collective form. For reference purposes, information which warrants special notice is credited to the teacher who furnished it. The Economy of the Philippines by Peter Krinks Pdf

In the late 1950s, the Filipino economy could reasonably have been described as more advanced than those of its South Asian neighbours. Ever since then, however, it has consistently lagged behind and only really started to grow strongly in the mid-1990s and even then it failed to achieve the growth rates of the rest of Southeast Asia ten years earlier. This book critically analyses the Filipino economy and attempts to explain the problems that it has faced, as well as the solutions that need to be put into practice. This accessible and comprehensive book will be of great use to students, academics and business professionals with an interest in the economies of Asia.

The Philippine Economy by Ramon L Clarete,Emmanuel F Esguerra,Hal Hill Pdf

In this volume, a leading group of scholars pose the question, has the Philippine economy rejoined the dynamic East Asian mainstream and, if so, what set of policies and priorities are required to maintain the strong economic momentum of recent years? Successive chapters address issues related to growth and poverty, infrastructure and urbanization, education, health, the environment, energy, development finance, and governance and institutions. The book has been written with a broad audience in mind. First and foremost it is for readers in, and interested in, this fascinating and important country with a population that now exceeds a hundred million. Second, it will appeal to those in the broader development community with an interest in the analytical and policy challenges that democratic, middle-income countries face as they struggle to lift their citizens out of poverty and to achieve broad-based and environmentally sustainable growth.

The Future of Philippine Agriculture under a Changing Climate by Mark W. Rosegrant,Mercedita A. Sombilla Pdf

The Philippine economy has grown rapidly since 2010, but despite this growth, poverty and inequality remain high. Two-thirds of the poor live in rural areas, and the weak performance of the agriculture sector has contributed to the slow improvement in livelihoods. The challenge for agriculture will further increase, with climate change posing a growing threat to the sector. But agricultural transformation to spur sustained growth and reduce poverty is still possible under climate change with aggressive institutional reforms and implementation of the right mix of policies and programmes. The identification of the suitable policy and programme combination requires an accurate assessment of the key drivers of agricultural growth and food security; the impacts of climate change on agriculture and the overall economy; and the effectiveness of policies for adaptation and growth. This book addresses these big issues, focusing on enhancing the adaptation capacity of the Philippine agriculture sector. It is designed to provide a much-needed base of knowledge and menu of policy options to support decision- and policymaking on agriculture, climate change, and food security. The volume uses newly generated data, modelling outputs, and innovative analyses to provide a scientific basis for a variety of adaptation measures under different sets of climate change scenarios to guide decision-makers in strategic planning and policy formulation. “As we have actually experienced in Leyte, an island province in the Visayas where Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) struck, disasters caused by natural hazards could completely negate economic gains, devastate families and shatter dreams. Our greatest challenge is to make ourselves better prepared for and be more resilient to such disasters. Natural hazards need not always lead to loss of so many lives and properties. This book shows us ways and provides tools to draw up climate change and socioeconomic scenarios at the regional and provincial levels, allowing us to identify strategies for mitigating climate change risks.” — Ernesto M. Pernia, Secretary of Socioeconomic Planning, National Economic and Development Authority, Philippines “This book by top Philippine researchers combines state-of-the-art biophysical and economic modeling of climate impacts and adaptation policies with in-depth synthesis of agriculture, natural resources, climate trends, and policies. It provides a comprehensive assessment of climate change impacts on agriculture and the broader economy to provide important insights for Philippine policymakers.” — Dr Cynthia Rosenzweig, Head, Climate Impacts Group, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Co-Founder of the Agricultural Model Inter-comparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP)
