The grammar differs somewhat from others in the proportion of space devoted to the several topics and in the order or manner of their presentation. In the chapter on nouns, I have based the classification solely on the form of the nominative plural, because, in all but a few irregular nouns, this case furnishes the clue to the formation of the genitive singular, Whereas the genitive singular, in the majority of both regular and irregular nouns, furnishes no clue whatever to the nominative plural. For the practical study of the beginner, therefore, the distinction between a strong and a weak declension is set aside; for subsequent historical study, however, it can easily be restored, since the classes remain the same as in most grammars. Excerpt from Elements of German Grammar The method of using the book is too plain to require long explanation; and the principal steps of general method are given under How to learn a foreign language. The grammatical part will be found to contain all that is needed for a class of beginners, and no time need be wasted in dictating grammar notes. The amount of grammar practice must be left to the teacher, who will do well to refer to the matter given as frequently as possible. Certainly instruction in German is a waste of time without some solid knowledge of grammar, unless the object is merely to acquire a small stock of conversational phrases. The answers to the questions are easy to find; and as there are over eight hundred of them, the teacher and the student are at liberty to select the easiest for a first semester, adding the rest when repeating, and supplementing them by as many more as may be feasible. In many cases the answers, when put together, will be found to form a tolerable composition on the subject of the questionaire. Originally published in English in 1986, this book offers a concise summary of the contribution Fritz Fischer and his school made to German historiography in the 20th century and in particular draws attention to continuity in the development and power structures of the German Reich between 1871 and 1945. After 1866 the traditional elites wanted to avoid fundamental changes in society, expecting a victorious war to secure their own position at home and to broaden the European base of the German Reich. Even as the Blitzkrieg expectations foundered, these ambitions persisted beyond 1918. In the face of working-class hostility, these elites were unable to mobilize mass support for their interests, but Hitler fashioned a mass party. The alliance between these unequal partners led to the Third Reich but with its collapse in 1945 the Prusso-German Reich came to an end. Only with the German Federal Republic did the liberal-democratic traditions of German history again come into their own.
