The Empire on Which the Sun Never Sets by Lambert M. Surhone,Miriam T. Timpledon,Susan F. Marseken Pdf

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The phrase The Empire on which the sun never sets has been used, with variations, to describe global empires so large that at least one part of their territory is always in daylight. It has been used mainly of the Spanish and British empires. The phrase was first used to describe the Spanish Empire in the 16th century, and originated with a remark made by Fray Francisco de Ugalde to Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. As emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and king of Spain Charles had an enormous empire which included many territories in Europe and vast territories in the Americas. The phrase gained added resonance during the reign of Charles's son, King Philip II of Spain. The Philippines was obtained by Spain in 1565. When King Henry of Portugal died, Philip II was recognised as King of Portugal in 1581, resulting in a personal union of the crowns.

The Sun Never Sets by Vivek Bald,Miabi Chatterji,Sujani Reddy,Manu Vimalassery Pdf

The Sun Never Sets collects the work of a generation of scholars who are enacting a shift in the orientation of the field of South Asian American studies which has, until recently, largely centred on literary and cultural analyses of an affluent immigrant population. The contributors focus instead on the histories and political economy of South Asian migration to the U.S. - and upon the lives, work, and activism of specific, often unacknowledged, migrant populations - presenting a more comprehensive vision of the South Asian presence in the United States. Tracking the shifts in global power that have influenced the paths and experiences of migrants, from expatriate Indian maritime workers at the turn of the century, to Indian nurses during the Cold War, to post-9/11 detainees and deportees caught in the crossfire of the "War on Terror," these essays reveal how the South Asian diaspora has been shaped by the contours of U.S. imperialism. Driven by a shared sense of responsibility among the contributing scholars to alter the profile of South Asian migrants in the American public imagination, they address the key issues that impact these migrants in the U.S., on the subcontinent, and in circuits of the transnational economy. Taken together, these essays provide tools with which to understand the contemporary political and economic conjuncture and the place of South Asian migrants within it. Vivek Bald is Assistant Professor of Comparative Media Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and author of Bengali Harlem and the Lost Histories of South Asian America. Miabi Chatterji received her PhD from New York University in American Studies. She serves on the Board of Directors of the RESIST Foundation and works with non-profit organizations such as NYUFASP, a group of NYU faculty working for shared governance at their institution.

The Sun Never Sets-- by Joseph Gerson,Bruce Birchard Pdf

This landmark book tells a powerful story, continent by continent, of the development of U.S. security strategy over the past century into a global system of military bases and facilities for military intervention that has corrupted democratic values, economic and social well-being, and environmental sustainability in every country that the system touches, including the United States itself.--Elise Boulding

Pyropolitics in the World Ablaze by Michael Marder Pdf

From books and heretics burnt on the pyres of the Inquisition to self-immolations at protest rallies, from the burning of fossil fuels to inflammatory speech, from the imagery of revolutionary sparks ready to ignite the spirits of the oppressed to car bombings and “scorched earth” policy, fire proves to be an indispensable element of the political. Pyropolitics in the World Ablaze builds upon the scintillating, by turns horrifying and hopeful, images and realities of flames, hearths, sparks, immolations, melting pots, incinerations, and burning in political thought and practices. Relying on classical political theory, theology, philosophy, literature and cinema, as well as an analysis of current events, Michael Marder argues that geo-politics, or the politics of the Earth, has always had an unstable, at once shadowy and blinding, underside—pyro-politics, or the politics of fire. If this obscure double of geopolitics is increasingly dictating the rules of the game today, then it is crucial to learn to speak its language, to discern its manifestations and to project where our world ablaze is heading. This new edition includes recent examples of the uses and accusations of ‘incendiary speech’ both by Donald Trump and by European populist right and exploration of threats of global warming that have now reached a turning point in our collective relation to the dangers and promises of fire .

Vile Acts of Evil by Michael A. Kirchubel Pdf

This book is not what you think. "Vile Acts of Evil - Banking in America" does not discuss your bank's usurious interest rates or ridiculous fees - irritants you know too well - and the title reflects neither joke nor hyperbole. This is the story of money, greed, and power in America. If you dare continue, you will soon realize, that the vast underbelly of our American history - the recessions, depressions, panics, and wars - the enormous amount of needless human turmoil, suffering, and carnage - the millions of wasted lives over hundreds of years - are but byproducts of extremely wealthy bankers seeking further wealth - mere corporate externalities, like black smoke stack soot, not worthy of a bookkeeping entry. Truly, Vile Acts of Evil.
