The Sailing Frigate by Robert Gardiner Pdf

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich houses the largest collection of scale ship models in the world, many of which are official, contemporary artefacts made by the craftsmen of the navy or the shipbuilders themselves, and ranging from the mid seventeenth century to the present day. As such they represent a three-dimensional archive of unique importance and authority. Treated as historical evidence, they offer more detail than even the best plans, and demonstrate exactly what the ships looked like in a way that even the finest marine painter could not achieve. This book is the first of a series which will take selections of the best models to tell the story of specific ship types – in this case, the evolution of the cruising ship under sail. Each volume reproduces a large number of model photos, all in full colour, and including many close-up and detail views. These are captioned in depth, but many are also annotated to focus attention on interesting or unusual features. Although pictorial in emphasis, the book weaves the pictures into an authoritative text, producing an unusual and attractive form of technical history. While the series will be of particular interest to ship modellers, all those with an interest in ship design and development will attracted to the in-depth analysis of these beautifully presented books.

Ship Models from the Age of Sail by Kerry Jang Pdf

The vast majority of period ship models are built from kits, usually primarily of wood with some ready-made fittings. Although these commercial offerings have improved significantly in recent years, all of them can be enhanced in accuracy or detail by an experienced modelmaker. This book, by an expert ship modeller, distils lessons gleaned from a lifetime practising the hobby to the highest standards, setting out methods of improving basic kits and gradually developing the skills and confidence to tackle the construction of a model from scratch. Using a variety of kits as the starting point, each chapter demonstrates a technique that can be readily improved or a feature that can be replaced to the advantage of the finished model. Topics include hull planking, representing copper sheathing, many aspects of more accurate masting and rigging, and how to replace kit parts and fittings from scratch. Ultimately, the impact of a period model depends on its accuracy, and the book also provides guidance on plans and references, where to find them and how they are best used. The plank-on-frame model, sometimes with exposed frames in the Navy Board style, has always been considered the crowning achievement of period ship modeling, and this book concludes with coverage of the very latest kits that put fully framed models within the reach of ordinary mortals. Offering advice, expertise and inspiration, Ship Models from the Age of Sail has something for anyone interested in building a period ship model, whatever their level of skill.

Creative Ship Model Making by Gerhard O.W. Fischer Pdf

It is often annoying that every kit model built from the same kit of the same company is like one egg from the other. This is what creative ship modelling aims to change! Using prefabricated hulls, it is mainly a matter ofthe superstructure, which must be redesigned, sawn out and further processed and further processed, without the need for a construction template. The conversion of kit models shows how to convert ready-built models to a completely new model by converting them to jet propulsion. Finally, the author presents four examples how larger display models can be converted into real driving models to properly running RC ship models by installing a remote-control system. From the content: • Construction of models according to own designs • Building description of two creative models • Building a police boat according to own ideas • Two creative construction models - The MULTIBOAT • A speedboat and a mega luxury yacht • Conversion of kit models - The FLORIDA as a jet model • The RAPIDO 600 as a jet model • A customs cruiser and a fishery protection boat • Conversion of display models to RC models • Cruise ship QUEEN MARY 2 • Sea rescue cruiser HERMANN MARWEDE • German submarine class VII C • American submarine GATO class • REVELL RC ship model already at the end of the 50s

Building a Miniature Navy Board Model by Philip Reed Pdf

The expert model maker takes readers through every stage of building a miniature navy board model in this fully illustrated step-by-step guide. In this clear and detailed volume, Phil Reed tackles the ultimate expression of the ship model maker's art: The Navy Board model. These early eighteenth-century works of art are well represented in major maritime museums and private collections. Here, Reed takes on the construction of a miniature 1/192 scale model of the Royal George of 1715, covering all the conventions of Navy Board framing and planking. With nearly 400 photographs, each accompanied by explanatory text, Building a Miniature Navy Board Model takes readers through every step of the process. Methods of hull and deck framing, internal and external planking, and the construction of the complex stern are all covered. The rendering of the multitude of decorative carvings on the figurehead, stern and broadside is also demonstrated. At the end of the book there is a short section showing his model of The Syren, which demonstrates how the techniques used to frame Royal George could be adapted for ships of a later date, using single and double frames closer to full-size practice

Ship Modeling Simplified: Tips and Techniques for Model Construction from Kits by Frank Mastini Pdf

In Ship Modeling Simplified, master model builder Frank Mastini puts to paper the methods he's developed over 30 years at the workbench to help novices take their first steps in an exciting pastime. You don't need the deftness of a surgeon or the vocabulary of an old salt to build a model. What you need is an understanding coach. Mastini leads readers from the mysteries of choosing a kit and setting up a workshop through deciphering complicated instructions and on to painting, decorating, and displaying finished models--with patience and clarity, not condescension. He reveals dozens of shortcuts: How to plank a hull "egg-shell tight"; how to build and rig complicated mast assmeblies without profanity; how to create sails that look like sails. . . . And along the way he points out things that beginners usually do wrong--beforehand, not after they've taken hammers to their projects. Ship Modeling Simplified even includes an Italian-English dictionary of nautical terms, the key to assembling the many high-quality Italian kits on the American market. Model building is fun, and not nearly as difficult as some experts would have you believe. Here is everything you'll ever need to get started in a hobby that will last a lifetime.

An Analytical Model to Predict Ship Transit Capacities of Sea-level Canals by John Harrison,B. G. Stinson,F. M. Anklam Pdf

The large first cost and subsequent operation and maintenance costs of sea-level canals demand that all economic and technical alternatives be thoroughly investigated before construction is begun. The vast number of variables to be considered for any given set of alternative canals requires study in an orderly and meaningful manner. An analytical model in the form of a digital computer program to predict ship transit calculates ship movements by evaluating, at small, equal time increments, the many changing factors which affect their movement. In addition to inserting ships into the canal in some prescribed order, the program keeps track of each ship (its type, location, speed, and direction) in the canal and adjusts its speed at each time increment so that each ship operates safely under a predetermined set of conditions. The program is designed to predict the number of ship transits per unit time by considering the canal configuration, flow conditions in the canal, and the shipping which is expected to use the canal. The program can be used to optimize canal configuration for any given expected shipping, to optimize the manner of ship input for a given canal configuration, and to develop operation procedures for any canal configuration with any ship mix.
