Department of the Solicitor General. Research Division,Research Group (Toronto, Ont.),Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Technical Research Division,Canadian Housing Information Centre Pdf

This study examined the nature and applicability of an approach to preventing crime through modifications to the environments in which it occurs--the Environmental Design and Management (EDM) approach. While drawing upon various antecedents, such as "defensible space" and "Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)", the EDM approach reflects the most current views on how crime in residential environments can be most effectively prevented through a balanced combination of strategies aimed at modifying both the design and management of the residential environment. It is primarily because of this equal weighting of design and management components that the EDM approach differs froms its antecedents.

Using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design in Problem-Solving by Diane Zahm Pdf

This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find publication. Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is anapproach to problem-solving that asks, what is it about this location that places people at risk, or that results in opportunities for crime? Solving a problem thus requires a detailed understanding of both crime and place, and the response should consider one of the three objectives of crime prevention through environmental design: control access, provide opportunities to see and be seen, or define ownership and encourage the maintenance of territory. This guidebook explains the basic principles of CPTED and outlines a process for identifying problems, evaluating the physical environment, and identifying strategies that will remove or reduce opportunities for crime. Coping with Burglary by R.V.G. Clarke,T. Hope Pdf

This book contains the papers given at a workshop organised by the Home Office (England and Wales) on the subject of residential burglary. This is a topic of much public concern, and I welcome the Home Office initiative in mounting the workshop. The contributors were all researchers and crim inologists who have made a special study of burglary, and their brief was to consider the implications of their work for policy. As a policeman, I find their work of particular interest and relevance at this time when police per formance, as traditionally measured by the clear-up rate, is not keeping pace with the increase in the numbers of burglaries coming to police attention. The finding that increases in burglary are more reflective of the public's reporting habits than of any significant rise in the actual level of burglary helps with perspective but offers little comfort to policemen. The 600/0 in crease in the official statistics since 1970 is accompanied by a proportionate increase in police work in visiting victims, searching scenes of crime, writing crime reports, and completing other documentation. In some forces the point has been reached where available detective time is so taken up by the volume of visits and reports that there is little remaining for actual in vestigation. But because of the random and opportunist nature of burglary, it cannot be said with any confidence that increasing investigative capacity would make a significant and lasting impact on the overall burglary figures.
