The Corail® Hip System was developed in 1986 as an innovative solution for hip arthroplasty and has since become one of the most used hip systems in the world. This book is designed as a practical manual to primary and revision arthroplasty that will serve both as a reference for surgeons in training and as a source of information, tips and tricks for the more experienced who wish to learn from the cases of other surgeons. The book is divided into three main parts. The first discusses everything that is practical about the system, including the surgical technique, treatment of complications, and the results achieved in large cohorts of patients. The second part is devoted to the important issues of surgical approach, bearing options, acetabular preparation and, cup orientation and fixation. The final part focuses on patient management and includes a collection of standard and complex clinical cases to which surgeons can refer when planning surgery.

The Adult Hip - Master Case Series and Techniques by Eleftherios Tsiridis Pdf

This book is intended to offer a “virtual fellowship” in hip surgery that will give readers the opportunity to join distinguished hip surgeons in the operating room, learning key points and solutions to technical difficulties from the beginning to the end of 100 surgical cases. All of these cases have been carefully selected by renowned orthopaedists who work at the world’s top centers and perform surgery based on evidence. To facilitate quick learning, the cases are presented using a uniform template, guiding the reader from clinical evaluation and preoperative planning, through the decision-making process, to the surgical procedure and the final outcome. At the end of each case, the editor invites the surgeon to answer specific questions in order to further elucidate crucial issues with reference to current evidence. The book is divided into four sections: conservative hip surgery, primary hip arthroplasty, complex hip arthroplasty, and revision arthroplasty. It will be of value across the world to specialist hip surgeons and surgeons in training who are interested in hip surgery.

The Well-Cemented Total Hip Arthroplasty by Steffen Breusch,Henrik Malchau Pdf

Cemented Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) remains one of the most successful procedures in Orthopaedic surgery. It has become very clear that it is the surgical expertise, in particular the quality of the cementing technique, which will affect long-term outcome and success. It is the intention of this book to provide an up-to-date comprehensive assessment of the entire field of cemented THA. Special emphasis has been given to practice-relevant aspects: well-illustrated and detailed operative steps as a practical guideline, a basic science chapter and long-term outcome data are provided. Minimally invasive surgery, modern perioperative management and patient fast tracking are covered. A number of highly respected experts have contributed to this in-depth compilation of the "state of the art" in 2005. This book is written and intended for both, trainees and established arthroplasty surgeons who are dedicated to perform a well-cemented THA.

Design of Artificial Human Joints & Organs by Subrata Pal Pdf

Design of Artificial Human Joints & Organs is intended to present the basics of the normal systems and how, due to aging, diseases or trauma, body parts may need to be replaced with manmade materials. The movement of the body generates forces in various work situations and also internally at various joints, muscles and ligaments. It is essential to figure out the forces, moments, pressure etc to design replacements that manage these stresses without breaking down. The mechanical characterization of the hard and the soft tissues are presented systematically using the principles of solid mechanics. The viscoelastic properties of the tissue will also discussed. This text covers the design science and methodology from concept to blueprint to the final component being replaced. Each chapter will be a brief overview of various joint/organ replacement systems. Engineers working on artificial joints and organs, as well as students of Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering are the main intended audience, however, the pedagogy is simple enough for those who are learning the subject for the first time.

Radiology of Orthopedic Implants by Sanjeev Agarwal,Gaurav Jyoti Bansal Pdf

There is an ever-expanding range of implants used in Orthopaedic Surgery. Nearly 200,000 joint replacement procedures are done in UK every year. The performance of these implants is assessed on radiographs. This is of interest to Orthopaedic surgeons and Radiologists alike. Information on interpretation of these radiographs is not readily available in an easily readable format. This book will assist both trainees and practicing orthopedic surgeons and radiologists in assessing the radiologic appearance of implants and their potential for future performance.

Evidence-Based Orthopedics by Mohit Bhandari Pdf

Evidence-Based Orthopedics is an up-to-date review of the best evidence for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of orthopedic conditions. Covering orthopedic surgery as well as pre- and post-operative complications, this comprehensive guide provides recommendations for implementing evidence-based practice in the clinical setting. Chapters written by leading clinicians and researchers in the field are supported by tables of evidence that summarize systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials. In areas where evidence is insufficient to recommend a practice, summaries of the available research are provided to assist in decision-making. This fully revised new edition reflects the most recent evidence using the approved evidence-based medicine (EBM) guidelines and methodology. The text now places greater emphasis on GRADE—a transparent framework for developing and presenting summaries of evidence—to allow readers to easily evaluate the quality of evidence and the strength of recommendations. The second edition offers a streamlined presentation and an improved standardized format emphasizing how evidence in each chapter directly affects clinical decisions. Incorporating a vast amount of new evidence, Evidence-Based Orthopedics: Features thoroughly revised and updated content, including a new chapter on pediatric orthopedics and new X-ray images Provides the evidence base for orthopedic surgery as well as pediatric orthopedics and orthopedic conditions requiring medical treatment Covers the different methods for most orthopedic surgical procedures, such as hip replacements, arthroscopy, and knee replacements Helps surgeons and orthopedic specialists achieve a uniform optimum standard through a condition-based approach Aligns with internationally accepted guidelines and best health economic principles Evidence-Based Orthopedics is an invaluable resource for orthopedic specialists, surgeons, trauma surgeons, trainees, and medical students.

Early Development of Total Hip Replacement by L. A. Reynolds,E. M. Tansey Pdf

Total hip replacement effectively began in the UK in 1938 and has led to widely used, commercially successful, mass-produced devices that relieve pain for an ever increasing period. The Witness Seminar, chaired by Mr Alan Lettin, discussed the remarkable postwar collaboration of British surgeons, engineers and manufacturing firms in the development of efficient alloys, surgical procedures, instruments and the implementation of clean, bacteria-reduced air in enclosed operating theatres, as illustrated by successful prostheses and techniques developed in Norwich (Kenneth McKee), Wrightington (Sir John Charnley), Stanmore (John Scales), Redhill (Peter Ring), and Exeter (Robin Ling and Clive Lee). Early failures - such as loosening from infection, osteolysis, and wear debris - stimulated the search for improved materials and fixation methods, as well as the addition of antibiotics to bone cement to reduce infection. National hip registers that record the survival of different implants were adopted in Europe in the 1970s (2003 in the UK), and they pinpoint the successful devices, as measured by survival and low rates of revision. An introduction to the volume by Dr Francis Neary and Professor John Pickstone, and appendices on materials by Professor Alan Swanson; on international standards by Mr Victor Wheble; and of details of selected prosthesis supplement the transcript.

Interfaces in Total Hip Arthroplasty by Ian D. Learmouth Pdf

Total hip arthroplasty is carried out to relieve pain and restore function and the implant should outlast the patient. However, failure at one of the interfaces represents the commonest cause of failure of total hip replacement. The durability of the fixation interfaces and the articular interface are therefore critical in determining the long-term performance of the implant. This book accesses the opinions of a number of experts in their field on the important issues and factors influencing the component cement and bone cement interface that contribute to durability of fixation in these areas. In addition they explore how this fixation can be influenced both by the design of the implant, the material properties and the cement. The various material combinations that are available at the articular interface are also presented and the wear properties of and generation of debris from the interfaces are revealed.
