The Expositions On The Psalms Volume 2 by St. Augustine of Hippo Pdf

In any commentary on a portion of the Old Testament by a writer unacquainted with Hebrew, exact criticism, and freedom from mistake, must not be expected. But the Psalms have been so in the mouth and in the heart of God's people in all languages, that it has been necessary often to find an explanation suitable to imperfect translations. And no doubt it is intended that we should use such explanations for the purpose of edification, when we are unable to be more accurate, though in proving doctrine it is necessary always to remember and allow for any want of acquaintance with the original, or uncertainty with respect to its actual meaning. However, the main scope and bearing of the text is rarely affected by such points as vary in different translations, and the analogy of the faith is sufficient to prevent a Catholic mind from adopting any error in consequence of a text seeming to bear a heterodox meaning. Perhaps the errors of translation in the existing versions may have led the Fathers to adopt rules of interpretation ranging too far from the simple and literal; but having such translations, they could hardly use them otherwise. Meanwhile St. Augustin will be found to excel in the intense apprehension of those great truths which pervade the whole of Sacred Writ, and in the vivid and powerful exposition of what bears upon them. It is hardly possible to read his practical and forcible applications of Holy Scripture, without feeling those truths by the faith of which we ought to live brought home to the heart in a wonderful manner. His was a mind that strove earnestly to solve the great problems of human life, and after exhausting the resources, and discovering the emptiness, of erroneous systems, found truth and rest at last in Catholic Christianity, in the religion of the Bible as expounded by St. Ambrose. This is volume two out of two, covering the Psalms LXXIV through CL.

Expositions of the Psalms by Saint Augustine (Bishop of Hippo.) Pdf

"As the psalms are a microcosm of the Old Testament, so the Expositions of the Psalms can be seen as a microcosm of Augustinian thought. In the Book of Psalms are to be found the history of the people of Israel, the theology and spirituality of the Old Covenant, and a treasury of human experience expressed in prayer and poetry. So too does the work of expounding the psalms recapitulate and focus the experiences of Augustine's personal life, his theological reflections and his pastoral concerns as Bishop of Hippo."--Publisher's website.

The Treasury of David by Gene Fedele,C H Spurgeon Pdf

Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892) was one of the most renowned preachers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as well as a prolific writer of evangelical works that have impacted the Christian Church over the past two centuries. His Treasury of David is his classic work on the book of Psalms which was originally published within the pages of his The Sword and The Trowel magazine over a 20-year period from 1865-1885, and then published in its entirety in a classic seven-volume set in 1885. The Treasury of David is quite unique in its composition as Spurgeon spent countless hours in libraries searching through the annals of eminent Christian authors throughout Church history for the choice comments he included with each verse of every Psalm—such as, Jonathan Edwards, Augustine, Thomas Brooks, Martin Luther, John Bunyan, Athanasius, Josephus, John Calvin, Thomas Goodwin, Richard Baxter, William Jay, John Trapp, Richard Hooker, William Gurnall, and many more. Upon completion of this work, Spurgeon comments, "The Book of Psalms instructs us in the use of wings as well as words. It sets us both mounting and singing. If I may only hope that these volumes will be as useful to other hearts in the reading as to mine in the writing, I shall be well rewarded by the prospect." One of Spurgeon's pastoral successors at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, Eric Hayden, once called this “Spurgeon’s Magnus Opus,” and his wife, Suzannah, remarked that if her husband had never written any other work, this would have been “a permanent literary memorial.” The publishers at Bridge Logos have republished this superb set from the original 1885 first edition in an easy-to-read 10-volume set which is conveniently divided into volumes that reflect the biblical delineation of the Five Books of the Psalms—and includes a biography of C. H. Spurgeon, by Pure Gold Classics editor, Gene Fedele. “This extraordinary set of commentaries on the Psalms, from one of the Church’s last eminent 'Puritans,’ has educated and inspired generations of Christians since its first release, nearly 150 years ago, and it is our hope and prayer that through this “Treasure” many more will be richly blessed and encouraged in their faith, now and for generations to come,” comments Fedele. This Pure Gold Classics edition of The Treasury of David, by Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892), is an expanded 10-volume set, published by Bridge Logos, intentionally divided into the Five Books of the Psalms delineated in the Holy Bible (AKJV). The Treasury of David: Volume Two (1865-1885) is an exposition of Psalms 18-27 and includes an introduction, by editor, Gene Fedele. This Second volume, along with volumes One and Three are the complete commentary of Book One (of Five) of the Psalms, comprised of Psalms 1-41. Each Psalm is expounded, verse by verse, by the “Prince of Preachers” and includes precious biblical insights and applications on the Scripture texts from hundreds of eminent Christians throughout history—such as Joseph Caryl, Hugh Latimer, Martin Luther, Thomas Brooks, Jonathan Edwards, Augustine, John Calvin, William Jay, Erasmus, John Newton, William Gurnall, John Flavel, Matthew Poole, Richard Sibbes, George Whitefield, and many more. As Spurgeon reflects, “Often I have ceased in my commenting upon the text [of the Psalms], that I might rise with the Psalm and gaze upon the visions of God.” This classic set remains a priceless “Treasure” of divine spiritual nourishment for every child of God."

Psalms (Vol. 2) by Charles H. Spurgeon Pdf

For hundreds of years Christendom has been blessed with Bible commentaries written by great men of God highly respected for their godly walk and their insight into spiritual truth. The Crossway Classic Commentaries present the very best work on individual Bible books, carefully adapted for maximum understanding and usefulness for today's believers. This book and its companion volume share the practical encouragement from a favorite Bible book. Charles H. Spurgeon spent twenty years compiling his seven-volume exposition of Psalms, which Crossway has carefully edited for the modern reader. In the words of Spurgeon in his Preface: "None but the Holy Spirit can give a man the key to the Treasury of David; and even he gives it rather to experience than to study. Happy he who for himself knows the secret of the Psalms.... In these busy days, it would be greatly to the spiritual profit of Christians if they were more familiar with the Book of Psalms, in which they would find a complete armory for life's battles, and a perfect supply for life's needs."

Psalms Book 2: An Earth Bible Commentary by Arthur Walker-Jones Pdf

Arthur Walker-Jones presents an Earth-focused reading of the second book of Psalms, focusing upon the many nonhuman animals that appear repeatedly within the text. In the first commentary to explore the implications of the natural and cultural history of animals for the interpretation of Psalms, Walker-Jones moves beyond the standard treatment of animals as mere metaphors for human concerns, or background to human stories. Instead, Walker-Jones draws upon the interdisciplinary field of animal studies, incorporating this into ecocritical analysis and arguing for the similarity between the two approaches, including recognizing that the oppression and liberation of humans is interrelated with the oppression and liberation of Earth and all its creatures. Walker-Jones looks at foxes, sheep, goats, cattle, doves, snakes, lions, snails, dogs, and deer, which all appear in Psalms 42–72, taking into account that many of these animals co-evolved with humans and created the particular ecological niche of the highlands east of the Mediterranean. Perceiving Earth in various ways-as refuge, as enemy, as Rock, and as fertile and joyous-this volume brings an entirely new ecological perspective to the Psalms.

The Psalms(Volume 2, Psalms 1–50) by Christopher Ash Pdf

Commentary from Christopher Ash Sets Out a Deeply Christian Study of Psalms 1–50 While reading Psalms, it is common for commentaries to focus on Old Testament meaning, without connecting it deeply to Christ's fulfillment in the New Testament. By studying Scripture this way, believers miss out on the fullness of God's word. The key to experiencing authentically Christian worship is learning a Christ-focused approach to praying and singing the Psalms. In this thorough commentary, Christopher Ash provides a careful treatment of Psalms 1–50, examining each psalm's significance to David and the other psalmists, to Jesus during his earthly ministry, and to the church of Christ in every age. Ash includes introductory quotations, a deep analysis of the text's structure and vocabulary, and a closing reflection and response, along with selected quotations from older readings of the Psalms. Perfect for pastors, Bible teachers, and students, this commentary helps readers sing and pray the Psalms with Christ in view. Exhaustive: Christopher Ash's exegesis explores how the Psalms are quoted and echoed throughout the New Testament Applicable and Heartfelt: Explains how a Christ-centered approach to reading the Psalms influences doctrines of prayer, prophecy, the Trinity, ecclesiology, and more Ideal for Pastors and Serious Students of Scripture: Written for Bible teachers, Sunday school and youth leaders, and small-group leaders
