The Extravaganzas of J. R. Planché, Esq., Vol. 4 by T. F. Dillon Croker Pdf

Excerpt from The Extravaganzas of J. R. Planché, Esq., Vol. 4: Somerset Herald 1825-1871 Latter it presented the finest opportunities. I need not say that they were made the most of by Mr. Beverley, and one of the results was little anticipated at the moment. N 0 special tableau for the termination of the piece being sug' gested in the story, it was left to that gentleman's taste and ingenuity to design one, and the novel yet exceedingly simple falling of the leaves of a palm tree, discovering six fairies supporting a coronet of jewels, produced such an efl'ect as I scarcely remember having witnessed on any similar occasion up to that period. But, alas! Valuable to the management and the author as I fully admit it proved on that occasion, it has been the cause of serious injury to the Drama subsequently. Year after year Mr. Beverley's powers were taxed to outdo his former out-doings. The epidemic spread in all directions. The last scene became the firsz in the estimation of the management of every theatre, where harlequinades were indispensable at Christmas. The ingenious method was hit upon of dove-tailing extravaganza and pantomime. A long burlesque, the characters in which have nothing to do with the harlequinade, terminates with one of those elaborate and gorgeous displays which have acquired the name of Transformation Scenes. Lejy are the objects of attraction, all the rest is inexplicable dumb show and noise. I have com mented on this fatal folly to a considerable length in my Recollections. I shall, therefore, only observe here, in support of my assertion, that it has seriously injured the true interests of the Drama; that managers, blindly relying on these costly displays for the pecuniary success of their pieces, are perfectly indifferent to the character of the dramas which precede them while, on the other hand. Illusions in Motion by Erkki Huhtamo Pdf

Tracing the cultural, material, and discursive history of an early manifestation of media culture in the making. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, huge circular panoramas presented their audiences with resplendent representations that ranged from historic battles to exotic locations. Such panoramas were immersive but static. There were other panoramas that moved—hundreds, and probably thousands of them. Their history has been largely forgotten. In Illusions in Motion, Erkki Huhtamo excavates this neglected early manifestation of media culture in the making. The moving panorama was a long painting that unscrolled behind a “window” by means of a mechanical cranking system, accompanied by a lecture, music, and sometimes sound and light effects. Showmen exhibited such panoramas in venues that ranged from opera houses to church halls, creating a market for mediated realities in both city and country. In the first history of this phenomenon, Huhtamo analyzes the moving panorama in all its complexity, investigating its relationship to other media and its role in the culture of its time. In his telling, the panorama becomes a window for observing media in operation. Huhtamo explores such topics as cultural forms that anticipated the moving panorama; theatrical panoramas; the diorama; the "panoramania" of the 1850s and the career of Albert Smith, the most successful showman of that era; competition with magic lantern shows; the final flowering of the panorama in the late nineteenth century; and the panorama's afterlife as a topos, traced through its evocation in literature, journalism, science, philosophy, and propaganda.

Fashion in the Fairy Tale Tradition by Rebecca-Anne C. Do Rozario Pdf

This book is a journey through the fairy-tale wardrobe, explaining how the mercurial nature of fashion has shaped and transformed the Western fairy-tale tradition. Many of fairy tale’s most iconic images are items of dress: the glass slippers, the red capes, the gowns shining like the sun, and the red shoes. The material cultures from which these items have been conjured reveal the histories of patronage, political intrigue, class privilege, and sexual politics behind the most famous fairy tales. The book not only reveals the sartorial truths behind Cinderella’s lost slippers, but reveals the networks of female power woven into fairy tale itself.

Editing Lives by Jesse G. Swan Pdf

Central to all post-Renaissance scholarship, textual studies continues to evolve, both in its techniques and methods as well as in the illumination it affords all other areas of modern knowledge. The life of our fellow human beings, and how we know and tell lives, is one such area of modern knowledge that is foundationally affected by theories and practices of textual creation, transmission, and apprehension. This collection of new essays and studies by internationally acclaimed scholars, along with a select few who are less acclaimed but of distinct promise, provides a view into the contemporary state of scholarship in textual and biographical studies. The collection also means to be of especial interest to scholars of the British eighteenth century, by concentrating its evidence and argument on topics and subjects important to contemporary eighteenth-century studies. The volume is inspired by the extensive contributions to the fields by the late O M Brack, Jr.

The Censorship of English Drama 1824-1901 by John Russell Stephens Pdf

Originally published in 1980, this was the first study to make use of the Lord Chamberlain's files on English stage censorship. Dramatic censorship is shown to be a significant index of the Victorian age and the book fills an important gap in the knowledge and understanding not only of Victorian theatre, but of Victorian manners and attitudes.
