The Fabric of Paul Tillich's Theology by David H. Kelsey Pdf

By taking seriously Tillich's claim to be a confessional Church theologian rather than a metaphysician with religious interests, this carefully ordered study gains a fresh perspective on the structure of argument upon which his theological enterprise rests. Scriptural material is shown to control his judgments in much the same way that literature controls those of the literary critic--a particularly illuminating comparison in view of his argument that the verbal icon provided by the biblical picture of Jesus as the Christ bears analogia imaginis to the historical Jesus and hence provides the sole access to the original Christian revelation. Tillich's movement from symbols as data to theological judgments as conclusions is seen to be warranted, not by his ontology, but by his presentation of the phenomenology of revelatory events. Though historical study of Jesus and of the Bible is in principle irrelevant to this use of scripture, his confusions in this area are examined, and the structural flaws in his accounts of the biblical picture of Jesus are shown to yield a Christian theology in which Christology is oddly dispensable. Finally, his discussion of God is used as a test case for the analysis of the general structure of his argument, and the various sorts of conclusions that he feels Scripture authorizes him to draw are cogently appraised.

Paul Tillich by Richard Pomeroy Pdf

Pomeroy gives the reader a clear view of the Systematic Theology of Paul Tillich, perhaps the greatest theologian of the 20th century. Tillich's theology addresses a wide range of theological issues beginning with the nature of God and ending with the nature of Eternal Life. Using the latest in social science analysis, Tillich identifies specific conditions confronted by individuals and nations, addressing each from a Bible-based theological standpoint. At the end of each chapter Pomeroy illustrates the issues at hand with real life stories or reflections from leading scientists, theologians and social scientists. This is then followed by discussion questions. The book is a welcome relief for theologians and lay people alike as it has depth without all those written words. For a mainline church study group it is a primer.

Systematic Theology by Paul Tillich Pdf

This is the first part of Paul Tillich's three-volume Systematic Theology, one of the most profound statements of the Christian message ever composed and the summation and definitive presentation of the theology of the most influential and creative American theologian of the twentieth century. In this path-breaking volume Tillich presents the basic method and statement of his system—his famous "correlation" of man's deepest questions with theological answers. Here the focus is on the concepts of being and reason. Tillich shows how the quest for revelation is integral to reason itself. In the same way a description of the inner tensions of being leads to the recognition that the quest for God is implied in finite being. Here also Tillich defines his thought in relation to philosophy and the Bible and sets forth his famous doctrine of God as the "Ground of Being." Thus God is understood not as a being existing beside other beings, but as being-itself or the power of being in everything. God cannot be made into an object; religious knowledge is, therefore, necessarily symbolic.

Paul Tillich by A. James Reimer Pdf

This collection of essays considers various aspects of Paul Tillich's theology of nature, culture, and politics in relation to major theological movements, thinkers, and events of the twentieth century. These essays are not purely an exercise in historical theology but an apology for Tillich's theological, philosophical, and ethical project. The underlying assumption is that Tillich's theology, both in form and content, is worth reading and learning from in the modern and postmodern era, even though we inhabit today an intellectual environment not very amenable to Tillich's form of mediation.

Why Study Religion? by Richard B. Miller Pdf

"This book asks: Can the study of religion be justified? It poses this question on the view that scholarship in religion, especially work in "theory and method," is preoccupied with matters of methodological procedure and thus inarticulate about the goals that can justify the study of religion and motivate scholarship in the field. For that reason, it insists, the field suffers from a crisis of rationale. The book identifies six prevailing methodologies in the field, each of which it critically examines as symptomatic of this crisis, on the way toward offering an alternative framework for thinking about purposes for studying religion. Shadowing these methodologies is a Weberian scientific ideal for studying religion, one that privileges value-neutrality. This ideal poses obstacles to making justificatory claims on behalf of studying religion and fortifies a repressive conscience about thinking normatively within the field's regime of truth. After making these points, the chapter describes the book's alternative framework, Critical Humanism, especially how it theorizes about the ends rather than the means of humanistic scholarship and offers a basis for thinking about the ethics of Religious Studies as held together by four values: Post-critical Reasoning, Social Criticism, Cross-cultural Fluency, and Environmental Responsibility. Ordered to such purposes, the book argues, the study of religion can imagine itself as a valuable and desirable enterprise so that scholars of religion can relax their commitment to matters of methodological procedure and avow the values of studying religion"--

The Irrelevance and Relevance of the Christian Message by Paul Tillich Pdf

"Why, Tillich asks, has the Christian message become seemingly irrelevant to contemporary society? Is the Gospel able to give answers to the questions raised by the existentialist analysis of the human predicament? Yes, he answers - but in order to do so Christian teaching and preaching need to undergo dramatic renewal, the root of which requires an affirmation of love as central to Christian identity. Further, we need to recognize that this task is not limited to preachers and theologians; all of us together are responsible for the irrelevance or the relevance of the Gospel in our time."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Paul Tillich and His System of Paradoxical Correlation by Charles Amarkwei Pdf

This book shows the paradoxical mode by which Christians keep their faith in the Christian message as they relate with science. It reveals how Paul Tillich’s method of correlation helps us to understand how Christians interact with science without necessarily conflicting, separating, and dialoguing, and synthesizing with each other. It rules out natural theology but provides a non-eclectic theology of nature that frees Christians to be involved in science meaningfully and without undermining their faith.

Theology at the End of Culture by Russell Re Manning Pdf

This book is a reconsideration of Paul Tillich's (1886-1965) project of a theology of culture and art. Concentrating on Tillich's widely neglected pre-emigration writings (1910-1933), Re Manning reconstructs and defends Tillich's proposals for theology of culture as a philosophically sophisticated programme of theological engagement with culture and art. 'On the boundary' between the extremes of liberal Christian humanism and neo-orthodox isolationism, Tillich's project is shown to be a powerful continuation of the mediatory intentions of the 'Schleiermacher-Troeltsch line' of modern Protestant theology to overcome the 'intolerable gap' between religion and culture. Drawing heavily on Tillich's incorporation of Schelling's positive philosophy into the deep structure of this theology, Re Manning argues that Tillich's 'Idealistic/Romantic theology of mediation' provides a way through the entrenched oppositions of the 'divided mind' of twentieth century theology to a constructive theology of cultural engagement. Further, this book offers an assessment of the continued relevance of Tillich's project in the situation of contemporary philosophical theology. Beyond the dominant antithetical types of postmodern theology - Mark C. Taylor's a/theology and the 'radical orthodoxy' of John Milbank - Re Manning argues for the possibility of a 'Tillichian postmodern theology of culture' able to engage with the spiritual situation 'at the end of culture.'
