The Famous History of the Life of King Henry the Eighth (Classic Reprint) by William Shakespeare Pdf

Excerpt from The Famous History of the Life of King Henry the Eighth I know no other play in Shakspere which is chargeable with a fault like this, none in which the moral sympathy of the spectator is not carried along with the main current of action to the end. The singularity of Henry VIII is that, while four-fifths of the play are occupied in matters which are to make us incapable of mirth [prologue, 25 the remaining fifth is devoted to joy and triumph, and ends with universal festivity.' The Famous History of the Life of King Henry the Eighth by William Shakespeare Pdf

Excerpt from The Famous History of the Life of King Henry the Eighth: A Historical Play, as Arranged for the Stage The Famous History of the Life of King Henry VIII. Is not the least popular of Shakespeare's historical plays. It is held by many that Shakespeare was assisted in the composi tion of this play by a younger dramatist, Fletcher. There is no direct evidence whatever of this; the opinion has been formed from a comparison of certain scenes in the play with the style and metre of Fletcher's work. Of this I am assured, that the play is touched by Shakespeare's genius; and if Fletcher was associated in the work, he must have been, as Mr. Hudson says, surprised out of himself. The picture of the Tudor period is so vivid, and the characterization at times so remarkable, that the revival of the play will, I trust, be welcome. The tragic interest ceases with the death of Katharine; but it will doubtless be recognised that the intention of the poet is to contrast, in the christening of Elizabeth, the sorrowful death of the divorced Queen with the brief triumph of Anne Bullen. I wish to express my indebtedness to Mr. Seymour Lucas, for his patient research and artistic skill, and to the many others who have rendered me valuable aid. Henry VIII (Classic Reprint) by A. F. Pollard Pdf

Excerpt from Henry VIII It is perhaps a matter rather for regret than for surprise that so few attempts have been made to describe, as a whole, the life and character of Henry VIII. No ruler has left a deeper impress on the history of his country, or done work which has been the subject of more keen and lasting contention. Courts of law are still debating the intention of statutes, the tenor of which he dictated; and the moral, political, and religious, are as much in dispute as the legal, results of his reign. He is still the Great Erastian, the protagonist of laity against clergy. His policy is inextricably interwoven with the high and eternal dilemma of Church and State; and it is well-nigh impossible for one who feels keenly on these questions to treat the reign of Henry VIII. in a reasonably judicial spirit. No period illustrates more vividly the contradiction between morals and politics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
