Excerpt from Sir Morell Mackenzie's Book on "the Fatal Illness of Frederick the Noble" An Interview With John O. Roe, M.D The German surgeons in their own report stated that their diagnosis was made by the process of exclusion rather than by any distinct appearances of the growth itself; therefore Dr. Mackenzie was entirely just-i _fied in desiring that a more positive diagnosis should be made. The German surgeons were desirous of establishing their diagnosis by opening the larynx from the outside and resorting to the removal Of a portion of the larynx where this growth was situated but it is clearly shown by their subsequent state ments that they intended stopping nothing short of the complete extirpation of the larynx. Florence Nightingale on Wars and the War Office by Lynn McDonald Pdf
Volume 15 of the Collected Works of Florence Nightingale, Wars and the War Office, picks up on the previous volume’s recounting of Nightingale’s famous work during the Crimean War and the comprehensive analysis she did on its high death rates. This volume moves on to the implementation of the recommendations that emerged from that research and to her work to reduce deaths in the next wars, beginning with the American Civil War. Nightingale’s writings describe the creation of the Army Medical School, the vast improvements made in the statistical tracking of disease, and new measures for soldiers’ welfare. Her role in the formulation of the first Geneva Convention in 1864 is related, along with her concern that voluntary relief efforts through the Red Cross not make war “cheap.” Nightingale was decorated by both sides for her work in the Franco-Prussian War. While much of her work concerned the mundane sending out of supplies, we see also in her writing her emerging interest in militarism as the cause of war. Her opposition to the Afghan War (of her time) and her work to provide nursing for the Egyptian campaigns, the Zulu War, and the start of the Boer War are also included.
Frederick the Great (Classic Reprint) by Charles Booth Brackenbury Pdf
Excerpt from Frederick the Great The tendency of modern historians is to reject the old hero-worship of kings and to throw the light of their researches upon the growth of nations rather than upon the genius of rulers, generals, and ministers. No doubt there is need of a change from the old method of writing history, by which the masters were glorified at the expense of the people. But the new process may be carried too far. It is possible that, in a not far distant future, the progress of trade and manufactures will be pushed by co-operative societies of workmen; but the historians of that time will be unjust if they forget the services ren dered in the past by capitalists and inventors. Politically, the world is travelling in the direction of constitutional government or even republicanism, which are both forms of co-operation; yet the power now known as the Empire of Germany was founded and built up by other means, prominent among which have been the character and actions of various members of the House of Hohenzollern. The Electors of Brandenburg raised themselves and their family by their own exertions at a time when Princes regarded their countries much as landed proprietors now do their estates. Territories with their whole populations were bought and sold without consulting other interests than those of the proprietors, and a Kaiser was not ashamed to wring a post obit for an important district out of the necessities of a young hereditary Prince, whose 928.
