The Finest Wines of Champagne by Michael Edwards Pdf

Champagne is synonymous with celebration and success—but have its festive associations detracted from its status as a fine wine in its own right? Drawing on his intimate knowledge of a classic but rapidly changing region, Michael Edwards takes a radically different approach in this unrivaled, terroir-based guide to the world’s best sparkling wines. Ninety in-depth profiles of the best small growers as well as the greatest houses are organized geographically—from the finest producers of the great city of Reims, wine towns of Epernay and Aÿ, and the leading villages of the Marne, and to the rising stars of the Aube (Côte des Bar) and beyond. Edwards also discusses the culture of Champagne, reviews trends in viticulture and winemaking, and investigates controversial solutions to the current crisis of success in a region that cannot satisfy global demand for its wines. Additional sections explore the gastronomic traditions of the area, give advice on pairing Champagne with food, survey the vintages of the past 20 years, list the wines with the best price-to-quality ratio, and more, making this extensively illustrated work a true connoisseur’s guide to the most glamorous and perhaps the most enigmatic of French wines.

The Finest Wines of California by Stephen Brook Pdf

Unconstrained by tradition or viticultural regulation, California winemakers enjoy a freedom that has resulted in a remarkable range of world-class wines. Beautifully illustrated with original photographs and detailed color maps, this guide introduces California wine by exploring the best that the state has to offer —from lush Sonoma Chardonnay to spicy Santa Barbara Syrah to heady Amador Zinfandel. At the heart of the book, award-winning wine writer Stephen Brook offers 90 intimate profiles of top producers—from Napa and Sonoma to the North and Central coasts, the Sierra foothills, and beyond. Brook also includes general information on California wine history, wine culture, grape varieties, and more. Throughout, he searches for the characteristics that make California wine distinctive despite its tremendous diversity—and finds the answer in the state’s unusual climate, especially the shifting interplay between fog and sun, as well as a lively and constant questioning of received ideas about viticulture, vine age, terroir, and winemaking techniques, all of which have helped winemakers to create complexity, individuality, and nuance in their wines.

The Finest Wines of Tuscany and Central Italy by Nicholas Belfrage Pdf

The wines of Tuscany were famous long before Leonardo da Vinci described them as “bottled sunshine,” and they are at the forefront of the remarkable renaissance of Italian wine over the past 30 years. In this groundbreaking new book, Nicolas Belfrage shares his insider’s knowledge acquired as a specialist wine trader and writer. Mindful of the region’s fascinating past, Belfrage brings its story up to date, discussing such subjects as geology and geography, grape varieties, and the latest research into Sangiovese, the variety used in the top wines of Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. He also clarifies the regulatory framework and follows the recent controversial developments in viticulture and winemaking, including the rise of the Super-Tuscans and the ongoing “Brunellogate” scandal that broke in 2008. At the heart of the book are in-depth, illustrated profiles of more than 90 of the most interesting producers, large and small, with insightful notes on the essential character of their finest wines. The author also offers a comprehensive review of vintages and selects his top 100 wines in ten different categories, while wines of special quality or value are indicated throughout.

Principles of Blended Learning by Norman D. Vaughan,Deborah Dell,Martha Cleveland-Innes,D. Randy Garrison Pdf

The rapid migration to remote instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic has expedited the need for more research, expertise, and practical guidelines for online and blended learning. A theoretical grounding of approaches and practices is imperative to support blended learning and sustain change across multiple levels in education organizations, from leadership to classroom. The Community of Inquiry is a valuable framework that regards higher education as both a collaborative and individually constructivist learning experience. The framework considers the interdependent elements of social, cognitive, and teaching presence to create a meaningful learning experience. In this volume, the authors further explore and refine the blended learning principles presented in their first book, Teaching in Blended Learning Environments: Creating and Sustaining Communities of Inquiry, with an added focus on designing, facilitating, and directing collaborative blended learning environments by emphasizing the concept of shared metacognition.

Snuff - Yesterday And Today by C. W. Shepherd Pdf

Whateer I do whereer I be, My social box attends on me. REV. WILLIAM KING, 1788. The general conception of a revolution is of something which goes off with a bang. But there is another kind of revolution which steals upon us almost before we are aware of it it comes, as it were, with the panthers velvet tread, and not with the charge of a buffalo. One such revolution is at work today it is the quiet return of snuff-taking as a social habit. Those who would dispute this should speak warily, for there is ample evidence lurking round the corner to coilfound them-the evideace of those whose business it is to mill, blend or sell snuff. Thus, there are blenders who, a decade ago, sold some hundreds of pounds weight of snuff anaually, now measure their outprrt-home and export-by the ton. The increase in siluff-taking is not confined to men. More women are taking to the tobacco powder, as it was once called and which it is, thus reviving the vogue snuff had among the ladies of the eighteenth century and later. The famous blenders, G. Smith and Sons, of Charing Cross Road, will tell us that an increasing proportion of their customers today are women. The subject of Women and Snuff is dealt with in Chapter VIT. It is difficult to analyse the general return to favour of snuff-taking some say the enormous rise in the price of tobacco and cigarettes is the reason certainly, by compar- ison, snuff-taking is a most economical pleasure. The cigarette scare naturally bumped up snuff sales for a time, but it had little to do with the steady increase which is progressing all the time. There are other possible reasons, but we will leave them to emerge in their appropriate chapters in this book. One of the fascinations of snuff-taking lies in the numerous different snuffs available to the snuff-taker. The mellow old firm of Smith and Sons-known as Smiths of Charing Cross Road to thousands of snuff-takers the world over-produce at least fifty varieties of snuffs from choice tobaccos whose broad leaves have ripened in sunnier climes than ours, and many of these snuffs are described in detail in Chapter IV. To those who think of snuff as just snuff the number of varieties comes as a surprise, and their picturesque names perhaps a revelation. Who can fail to be charmed by such appellations as Golden Cardinal, Lavender and Otterburn, not to mention Garden Mint, an innovation of Smiths, with a distinct whiff of real mint about it There are, too, the natural snuffs, with no flavouring save that of honest-to- goodness tobacco. And here it may be mentioned that, basically, snuff consists of nothing else the addition of other substances except flavouring being prohibited by law. Long gone are the days when dried and powdered dock leaves and other substances were craftily mixed with the tobacco...
