The First Cases of the Continental Op (Annotated) by Dashiell Hammett Pdf

The illustrated introduction of this book reviews briefly Dashiell Hammett as a writer and the first stories of the Continental Op, one of his most enduring creation.Samuel Dashiell Hammett was an American author of hardboiled detective novels and short stories. He created enduring characters such as Sam Spade ("The Maltese Falcon"), Nick and Nora Charles ("The Thin Man"), and the Continental Op, a never named insurance investigator ("Red Harvest," "The Dain Curse," and numerous short stories). Hammett is widely regarded as one of the finest mystery writers of all time. "The New York Times," called him "the dean of the hardboiled school of detective fiction," although, technically, John Carroll Daly was the first to write a story in the hardboiled style and to create, with Terry Mack and Race Williams, the first hardboiled private eyes. The very first five stories by Hammett were Continental Op stories, some written under the pseudonym of Peter Collinson, and all published in "Black Mask" toward the end of 1923. Later on, the stories were collected and republished in book form. This eBook contains all first five stories as originally published in "Black Mask": "Arson Plus," written under the pseudonym of Peter Collinson, "Black Mask," October 1, 1923; "Crooked Souls" (also known as "The Gatewood Caper"), "Black Mask," October 1, 1923; "Slippery Fingers", written under the pseudonym of Peter Collinson, "Black Mask," October 15, 1923; "It" (also known as "The Black Hat That Wasn't There"), "Black Mask," November 1, 1923; and "Bodies Piled Up" (also known as "The House Dick"), "Black Mask," December 1, 1923.

The Big Book of the Continental Op by Dashiell Hammett Pdf

Now for the first time ever in one volume, all twenty-eight stories and two serialized novels starring the Continental Op—one of the greatest characters in storied history of detective fiction. Dashiell Hammett is the father of modern hard-boiled detective stories. His legendary works have been lauded for almost one hundred years by fans, and his novel The Maltese Falcon was adapted into a classic film starring Humphrey Bogart. One of Dashiell Hammett's most memorable characters, the Continental Op made his debut in Black Mask magazine on October 1, 1923, narrating the first of twenty-eight stories and two novels that would change forever the face of detective fiction. The Op is a tough, wry, unglamorous gumshoe who has inspired a following that is both global and enduring. He has been published in periodicals, paperback digests, and short story collections, but until now, he has never, in all his ninety-two years, had the whole of his exploits contained in one book. The book features all twenty-eight of the original standalone Continental Op stories, the original serialized versions of Red Harvest and The Dain Curse, and previously unpublished material. This anthology of Continental Op stories is the only complete, one-volume work of its kind.

Pulp Fiction to Film Noir by William Hare Pdf

During the Great Depression, pulp fiction writers created a new, distinctly American detective story, one that stressed the development of fascinating, often bizarre characters rather than the twists and turns of clever plots. This new crime fiction adapted brilliantly to the screen, birthing a cinematic genre that French cinema intellectuals following World War II christened "film noir." Set on dark streets late at night, in cheap hotels and bars, and populated by the dangerous people who frequented these locales, these films introduced a new antihero, a tough, brooding, rebellious loner, embodied by Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon and Philip Marlowe in The Big Sleep. This volume provides a detailed exploration of film noir, tracing its evolution, the influence of such legendary writers as Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, and the films that propelled this dark genre to popularity in the mid-20th century.

History of Economic Analysis by Joseph A. Schumpeter Pdf

At the time of his death in 1950, Joseph Schumpeter was working on his monumental History of Economic Analysis. Unprecedented in scope, the book was to provide a complete history of economic theory from Ancient Greece to the end of the second world war. A major contribution to the history of ideas as well as to economics, History of Economic Analysis rapidly gained a reputation as a unique and classic work. As well being an economist, Schumpeter was a gifted mathematician, historian, philosopher and psychologist and this is reflected in the multi-disciplinary nature of his great endeavour. Topics addressed include the techniques of economic analysis, contemporaneous developments in other sciences and the sociology of economics. This inclusiveness extends to the periods and individuals who figure in the book. As well as dealing with all of the major economists from Adam Smith to Maynard Keynes, the book considers the economic writings of Plato and Aristotle, of the Medieval Scholastics and of the major European economists. Throughout, Schumpeter perceived economics as a human science and this is reflected in a volume which is lucid and insightful throughout.

Killer Acquisitions in Digital Markets: An Analysis of the EU Merger Control Regime by Giulia Sonderegger Pdf

In her PhD thesis, Giulia Aurélie Sonderegger analyses killer acquisitions, which, in short, are acquisitions that aim to pre-empt potential future competition at an early stage. While this phenomenon was originally discovered in pharmaceutical markets, this thesis exclusively discusses killer acquisitions in the context of digital markets, thereby primarily focusing on the current European Merger Control Regulation (EUMR). The main research question is whether the EUMR is appropriate to tackle killer acquisitions occurring in digital markets, and if not, in what ways it needs to be amended to better address the challenges in the future. To tackle this question, the author assesses both the economic and legal effects of killer acquisitions on merger control in digital markets and, based on her findings, suggests amendments to the current European merger control regime. For a more comprehensive analysis, this thesis also includes an assessment of the recently enacted Digital Markets Act (DMA) to ascertain whether this regulation may serve as an additional tool to remedy such transactions.

Karl Popper and Situational Analysis by Alfonso Palacio-Vera Pdf

‘Situational Analysis’ represents Karl Popper’s methodological proposal for the social sciences. Although it has been widely studied and interpreted, this book argues that Situational Analysis remains underestimated and undeveloped and, if properly reformulated, could yet become a broad methodological framework that encompasses both the ‘historical’ social sciences and a large section of the ‘theoretical’ social sciences. The first part of this book develops this idea by returning to Popper’s texts. This book calls for both a reformulation of Situational Analysis and a clarification of the status and role of Popper’s ‘Rationality Principle’. This book also develops Situational Analysis by addressing two aspects of the Problem-Situation facing individual actors that are only sketched out in Popper’s work: institutions and expectations. The second part of this book utilizes the reformulated version of Situational Analysis to shed light on the core methodological differences across some of the most widespread approaches in contemporary economics and sociology. In particular, by showing that many of these approaches are variants of the reformulated version of Situational Analysis presented in the first part of this book, this book argues that apparent methodological differences across these approaches may be reinterpreted as differences in the way social scientists reconstruct the Problem-Situation facing individual actors. This book will be vital reading for academic economists, sociologists, philosophers of science, and other social scientists interested in methodology.

Toward a Theory of True Crime Narratives by Ian Case Punnett Pdf

Toward a Theory of True Crime Narratives vivifies how nonfiction murder stories are told, what role they play in society, and in the form of true crime why they remain enduringly popular internationally on every platform. This book establishes for the first time the actual line—or dotted line—between mainstream journalism and the multimedia phenomena of true crime. Presenting a stable definition of what is—and what is not—true crime will either challenge or justify Truman Capote’s claims regarding the creation of a "new journalism" with In Cold Blood, and accordingly expose the reluctance of the promoters of NPR’s Serial, HBO’s The Jinx, and Netflix’s Making a Murderer to refer to their products as such. This research codifies true crime texts of various types on multiple platforms—radio, television, print, digital, and film—to reveal the defining characteristics of the genre.
