The First International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments, Venice, October 10-12, 2001: Remediation and beneficial reuse of contaminated sediments (S1-3) by Robert E. Hinchee,Augusto Porta,Marco Pellei Pdf

Papers are concerned with approaches for treating and detoxifying sediments and for isolating and stabilizing contaminated sediments by capping or in disposal facilities. Authors describe their experiences with monitored natural attenuation of sediments and with a wide variety of treatment technologies (e.g., physical, chemical, thermal, electrokinetic, enhanced biodegradation, phytoremediation) to remediate sediments and wetlands. Several papers focus on options for beneficial reuse of sediments and on containment/immobilization approaches. Book jacket.

Contaminated Sediments: by Marianne Olsen,Karina Petersen,Alizee P. Lehoux,Matti Leppänen,Morten Schaanning,Ian Snowball,Sigurd Øxnevad,Espen Lund Pdf

The Nordic Council of Ministers have recognized the need to compile the knowledge of sediment remediation strategies and to evaluate different remediation approaches. The objective of this report is to give a status of regulatory framework and sediment management within selected Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark). In addition, the report gives a short overview of international knowledge on remediation approaches, techniques, and materials. Governance and regulatory instruments in dealing with contaminated sediments vary between countries. Of the countries presented, only Norwegian environmental authorities have implemented a national strategy for remediation of marine contaminated sediments. A Nordic database of clean-up projects and long-term monitoring would improve the exchange of knowledge between the Nordic countries.

Contaminated Marine Sediments by National Research Council,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems,Committee on Contaminated Marine Sediments Pdf

The pervasive, widespread problem of contaminated marine sediments is an environmental issue of national importance, arising from decades of intentionally and unintentionally using coastal waters for waste disposal. This book examines the extent and significance of the problem, reviews clean-up and remediation technologies, assesses alternative management strategies, identifies research and development needs, and presents the committee's major findings and recommendations. Five case studies examine different ways in which a variety of sediment contamination problems are being handled.
