The consequences of becoming a Christian in the early Christian movement is set apart from that move from any other religious affiliation. You could become a Mithraist or Isiac or whatever, and it made no difference to your previous religious activities and loyalties. You continued to take part in the worship of your inherited deities of household, city, nation. But if you became a Christian you were expected to desist from worship of all other deities. D. 313) My aim in the following pages has been to present, within a comparatively moderate compass, the results of the most mature investigations into the history and life of the early Church, in a form at once solid and popular, and thus to produce a work suited alike to the purposes of closet study and of general Christian edification. With this view, I have adopted the following method: First, I have excluded from the main body of the work all such minute details of theological sects and controversies as are necessarily unintelligible and repulsive to general readers, referring the student to a full Appendix at the close, chiefly from approved writers, for ampler information on special points; and, secondly, I have sought to enrich and enliven the meagre detail of ecclesiastical events and names with such graphic notices of Christian faith and manners, and such glimpses into the inner life of that old time, as are usually presented in a separate form, but which constitute, in truth, the very soul of Christian history.
