Report of the Maryland State Board of Forestry for 1910 and 1911 (Classic Reprint) by Maryland State Board of Forestry Pdf

Excerpt from Report of the Maryland State Board of Forestry for 1910 and 1911 The State Board of Forestry has been in existence a little over five years, and during that time it has prosecuted the work of laying the foundations of a State forest policy that should meet the needs of our people. Maryland, with its acres of woodland, is unable to pro duce more than one-third of the timber she uses because of destructive methods of cutting, and the injury resulting from repeated forest fires. If her forest lands were as fully productive as they could be made by proper forest management, they would produce three times as much as they are now doing, and the value would be at least four times as great, due to the better quality of product. Instead Of importing the bulk of her timber, the State might be growing all that she requires, or its value equivalent. The State Reserves of Maryland (Classic Reprint) by John Gordon Dorrance Pdf

Excerpt from The State Reserves of Maryland The term Reserve means, literally, some place kept in store, held back for future use. It is the intention of the Maryland Board of Forestry that it shall practically apply as reserved, but for public use now. It is very well to safeguard the water, and pro teet the land; but modern forest practice has its best omoe in making actual contribution to the public weal and wealth. It is with this thought that the State Reserves of Maryland are thrown open for generous use by all the people of the State. Report of the Maryland State Board of Forestry for 1912 and 1913 (Classic Reprint) by Maryland State Board of Forestry Pdf

Excerpt from Report of the Maryland State Board of Forestry for 1912 and 1913 The work of the State Board of Forestry for the past two years has followed along much the same lines as in former years, but with the increase in the number of technical assistants it has been possible for the State Forester to carry on a much more intensive work than has been done hitherto. The powers of the Board were increased by the last Legislature by an act authorizing the purchase of lands along the Patapsco river for a State Forest Reservation. The examination, survey and acquisition of these lands have consumed much of the time of the field and office force for the past year. The Forest-Land Owners of Delaware (Classic Reprint) by Neal P. Kingsley Pdf

Excerpt from The Forest-Land Owners of Delaware The sum of the weighted number of owners then provides an unbiased estimate of the total number of persons who own commercial forest land in Delaware. The acreage of commercial forest land was es timated in a manner similar to that used in the forest survey. The total area of privately owned commercial forest land was divided by the num ber of field plots represented in the ownership canvass. Thus, if a particular respondent owned one forested plot, his response was given a weight of one and his response was said to ac count for acres of commercial forest land. If a respondent represented two forested plots, his response received a weight of two, or double the acreage, and so on. Actual reported acreage was used only to calculate the sample mean, mode, and median. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Forest-Land Owners of Southern New England (Classic Reprint) by Neal P. Kingsley Pdf

Excerpt from The Forest-Land Owners of Southern New England The most common reason given by fore land owners for harvesting timber was la clearing. Thirty percent of those owners harvested timber indicated land-clearing their reason for doing so. However, these 0 ers own only 11 percent of all the land held owners who have harvested timber. Owners of 26 percent of the land held past harvesters said they harvested their ti ber because it was mature. They account 14 percent of the owners who harvested. Other 19 percent of the owners who have h vested, and who own 24 percent Of the la did so because they needed money. Ten percent of the owners harvested timas part Of a timber-stand cultural treatment. These owners hold 13 percent of the forest land held by owners who have harvested. Three reasons for harvesting - timber salvage, har vesting recommended by a forester, and cul tural treatment - all imply a conscious effort on the part of the owner to improve the con dition of his forest land. All together, 20 per cent Of those Southern New England owners who have harvested timber did so for one of these reasons. They own 22 percent Of the forest land held by harvesting owners (fig. The Forest-Land Owners of Kentucky (Classic Reprint) by Thomas W. Birch Pdf

Excerpt from The Forest-Land Owners of Kentucky The most recent forest survey of Ken tucky - 1975 - provided estimates of forest area and timber volume by broad owner categories (kingsley and Powell That survey did not, however, estimate the timber volume or acreage of commercial forest land that is available for har vesting. The report also did not describe forest land owners, their reasons for owning forest land, or their attitudes toward timber harvesting, forest management, and the recreational use of their lands by the public. Such information is useful to public agencies for planning and organizing forestry-related pro grams; to forest industries for locating available timber; and to others for learning more about the motivations and objectives of forest-land owners. Ninety-two percent of the commercial forest land in Kentucky is in private hands, and an in-depth look at the private forest-land owners will provide a better understanding of the forest resources of the State. Excerpt from The Forest-Land Owners of West Virginia The data presented here are based on a sample of forest-land owners. The results of this sample have been statistically expanded to estimate the total population of owners of privately held forest land and the acreage they own. To fully under stand how estimates were made, the user of these data is advised to read the discussion of study methods and sampling errors in the Appendix. For the resurvey of the forest resources of West Virginia, data were developed for four geographic sampling units: (1) National Forest Land; (2) the Northeastern Unit; (3) the Southern Unit, and (4) the Northwestern Unit. Thirty Important Forest Trees of Maryland by Maryland State Board of Forestry Pdf

Excerpt from Thirty Important Forest Trees of Maryland: How to Know Them The two kinds of owers are at the end of minute twigs on separate trees. Blooming in February or March, the male trees often assume a golden color from the small catkins, which, when shaken, shed clouds of yellow pollen. The fruit, which matures in one season, is pale blue, often with a white bloom, one-quarter of an inch in diameter, berry-like, enclos ing one or two seeds in the sweet esh. It is a favorite winter food for birds. The bark is very thin, reddish brown, peeling off in long, shred-like strips. The tree is extremely irregular in its growth, so that the trunk is usually more or less grooved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
