WILLA Literary Award Winner in Creative Nonfiction 2022 Spur Award Winner 2022 Top Pick in Southwest Books of the Year New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards Finalist in Cover Design Honorable Mention in the At-Large NFPW Communications Contest The Forgotten Botanist is the account of an extraordinary woman who, in 1870, was driven by ill health to leave the East Coast for a new life in the West--alone. At thirty-three, Sara Plummer relocated to Santa Barbara, where she taught herself botany and established the town's first library. Ten years later she married botanist John Gill Lemmon, and together the two discovered hundreds of new plant species, many of them illustrated by Sara, an accomplished artist. Although she became an acknowledged botanical expert and lecturer, Sara's considerable contributions to scientific knowledge were credited merely as "J.G. Lemmon & wife." The Forgotten Botanist chronicles Sara's remarkable life, in which she and JG found new plant species in Arizona, California, Oregon, and Mexico and traveled throughout the Southwest with such friends as John Muir and Clara Barton. Sara also found time to work as a journalist and as an activist in women's suffrage and forest conservation. The Forgotten Botanist is a timeless tale about a woman who discovered who she was by leaving everything behind. Her inspiring story is one of resilience, determination, and courage--and is as relevant to our nation today as it was in her own time.

Discovery. Desire. Deception. A wondrously imagined tale of two female botanists, separated by more than a century, in a race to discover a life-saving flower, from the author of the bestselling The Forgotten Letters of Esther Durrant In Victorian England, headstrong adventuress Elizabeth takes up her late father's quest for a rare, miraculous plant. Excerpt from The Botanist: Being the Botanical Part of a Course of Lectures on Natural History, Delivered in the University at Cambridge; Together With a Discourse on the Principle of Vitality The objects in nature are like the colours of the rainbow, of which the dullest eye can perceive the varieties, while the keenest cannot catch the precise point, at which every separate tint is parted from its neighbouring. The Essentials of Botany (Classic Reprint) by Charles E. Bessey Pdf

Excerpt from The Essentials of Botany In the use of this book I must urge that it is intended to serve as a guide only to the teacher and student. The student must actually see as much as possible of what is here brought to his notice. The book simply marshals in logical order the objects to be studied. No doubt some thing may be learned by a simple consecutive reading of the paragraphs of the book, but the young botanist should not be content to obtain all his facts at second hand; he must see with his own eyes all that may be seen. The Botanists of Philadelphia and Their Work (Classic Reprint) by John William Harshberger Pdf

Excerpt from The Botanists of Philadelphia and Their Work This book is the outcome of much correspondence and research. It is a contribution to the history of botany in America. Until such a history is written, the facts concerning our botanists must be recorded in some permanent form. This, the present work, endeavors to do for the region comprised within a radius of sixty miles of the City of Philadelphia. If a circle of such a radius be drawn on a map, it will include the cities of Lancaster and Easton. Two considerations influenced the author in adopting this limit. (1) It is the one used by the Philadelphia Botanical Club in its herborization trips; (2) the country within that circle centralizes in Philadelphia. Every available source of information has been searched in the endeavor to obtain reliable data. The author feels the shortcomings of the book, and he hopes that the botanical public will overlook the errors considering the fragmentary character of the information available in its preparation. It does not claim to be a complete list of the botanists who lived near Philadelphia; many names which ought to have been included are probably omitted for lack of information concerning them. The author believes that the omissions are few, and that the book gives the names of the greater number of Philadelphia botanists. The names are arranged according to the dates of birth in the biographical portion of the book; according to the letters of the alphabet in the general lists. Makers of British Botany by F. W. Oliver Pdf

Excerpt from Makers of British Botany: A Collection of Biographies by Living Botanists HE origin and scope of the present book will be found fully indicated in the Introduction, so that it is not needful to refer to them here. One change in the original scheme of the work has been made during its passage through the press, viz. The inclusion of an additional chapter from the pen of Prof. F. O. Bower dealing with the life of the late Sir Joseph Hooker. Our veteran botanist passed away on Dec. 10, 1911, in his 95th year, and in him botany loses its outstanding personality as well as its principal link with the past. The history of botany in this country during the Victorian period, when it comes to be written, must of necessity be woven around the life of this great man. For the excellent index to the book the reader is indebted to Dr E. De Fraine, whose. Care, and good judgment in this matter will be fully appreciated. Field Study by Helen Humphreys Pdf

Award-winning and beloved author Helen Humphreys discovers her local herbarium and realizes we need to look for beauty in whatever nature we have left — no matter how diminished Award-winning poet and novelist Helen Humphreys returns to her series of nature meditations in this gorgeously written and illustrated book that takes a deep look at the forgotten world of herbariums and the people who amassed collections of plant specimens in the 19th and 20th centuries. From Emily Dickinson’s and Henry David Thoreau’s collections to the amateur naturalists whose names are forgotten but whose collections still grace our world, herbariums are the records of the often-humble plants that are still with us and those that are lost. Over the course of a year, Humphreys considers life and loss and the importance of finding solace in nature. Illustrated throughout with images of herbarium specimens, Humphreys’s own botanical drawings, and archival photographs, this will be the perfect gift for Humphreys’s many fans, nature enthusiasts, and for all who loved Birds Art Life.
