The Founders and Builders of the Oranges by Henry Whittemore Pdf

Excerpt from The Founders and Builders of the Oranges: Comprising a History of the Outlying District of Newark, Subsequently Known as Orange, and of the Later Internal Divisions, Viz;; South Orange, West Orange, and East Orange Although three histories of this locality have been published during the past thirty odd years, careful research and thorough investigation have brought to light many new and interesting facts. And for the first time a complete history of all the Oranges. Including the history of the several churches, schools, societies, etc., is presented to the public. This covers a period of two hundred and thirty years - 1666 to I896 - and shows a growth almost unprecedented in the history of any similar locality. The past and present are presented in the strongest light; the old land marks of the Founders and the beautiful homes of the Builders are illustrated in the highest style of modern art, while the personal history of both Founders and Builders, together with a large amount of interesting genealogical data has been collected at great expense and severe labor. Nearly three years of incessant toil, day and night, has been spent in this undertaking, and the author has endeavored to place himself in communication with every man and woman in the Oranges who could in any way contribute to the interest of the work by furnishing personal or other data. Murder on the Mountain by Peter J. Wosh,Patricia L. Schall Pdf

Margaret Klem and John Meierhofer were Bavarian immigrants who arrived in New Jersey in the 1850s, got married, and started a small farm in West Orange. When John returned from the Civil War, he was a changed man, neglecting his work and beating his wife. Margaret was left to manage the farm and endure the suspicion of neighbors, who gossiped about her alleged affairs. Then one day in 1879, John turned up dead with a bullet in the back of his head. Margaret and her farmhand, Dutch immigrant Frank Lammens, were accused of the crime, and both went to the gallows, making Margaret the last woman to be executed by the state of New Jersey. Was Margaret the calculating murderess and adulteress portrayed by the press? Or was she a battered wife pushed to the edge? Or was she, as she claimed to the end, innocent? Murder on the Mountain considers all sides of this fascinating and mysterious true crime story. In turn, it examines why this murder trial became front-page news, as it resonated with public discussions about capital punishment, mental health, anti-immigrant sentiment, domestic violence, and women’s independence. This is a gripping and thought-provoking study of a murder that shocked the nation.

The Urban Origins of Suburban Autonomy by Richardson Dilworth Pdf

Using the urbanized area that spreads across northern New Jersey and around New York City as a case study, this book presents a convincing explanation of metropolitan fragmentation—the process by which suburban communities remain as is or break off and form separate political entities. The process has important and deleterious consequences for a range of urban issues, including the weakening of public finance and school integration. The explanation centers on the independent effect of urban infrastructure, specifically sewers, roads, waterworks, gas, and electricity networks. The book argues that the development of such infrastructure in the late nineteenth century not only permitted cities to expand by annexing adjacent municipalities, but also further enhanced the ability of these suburban entities to remain or break away and form independent municipalities. The process was crucial in creating a proliferation of municipalities within metropolitan regions. The book thus shows that the roots of the urban crisis can be found in the interplay between technology, politics, and public works in the American city.

South Orange by Naoma Welk Pdf

With more than two hundred vintage photographs, South Orange presents a distinctive view of a village that has evolved from a rural to a sophisticated landscape. Situated next to a two-thousand-five-hundred-acre forest preserve filled with wildlife, South Orange is just a half-hour drive from Manhattan. In the early 1800s, South Orange was popular for its reputation as a healthy, relaxing destination-an escape from the increasingly industrial big-city landscapes of the region. Today, this bedroom community presents a unique mix of cosmopolitan and suburban environments. South Orange follows the village through growth and development, illustrating how it has maintained much of its original character. The many extant homes in a wide variety of late-architectural styles hint at the summer afternoon tea parties of the nineteenth century. The gas-service lamps lining the streets of South Orange were once fueled by whale oil. The home of the Orange Lawn Tennis Club and Seton Hall University, South Orange was also the dwelling place of W.F. Havemeyer, real-estate tycoon, and Louis Bamberger, founder of Bamberger's Department Store, now known as Macy's. Another South Orange notable was William Frederick Allen, editor of the Official Railway Guide, who helped to implement the use of standard time in the United States.
