The Four Dragons: Classic Folk Stories and Traditional Fairy Tales by Melanie Voland,Treehouse Books Pdf

Once upon a time in China, there were no rivers or lakes at all, and the only water, in all the land was the Eastern sea, where four great dragons lived. The dragons names were: The Long Dragon, the Black Dragon, the Pearl Dragon and the Yellow Dragon. The dragons lived in the sea, and they spent most of their days swimming and playing there, but they could also fly, and play in the sky together amongst the clouds. One day they flew high up together over the sea and mountains, and suddenly, the Pearl Dragon said, "Come and look at this..." Dragons by Teya Evans Pdf

The traditional retold FAIRY TALES in this volume speak of the awesome and the marvellous, of the perilous and the exhilarating. We shall explore the traditional, age-old stories for children our ancestors have told us about DRAGONS. These fairy tales of awe have grown and flourished all over the globe, although as you travel futher East it's likely that you'll find more dragons - and also kindlier ones. For not all dragons are the same: they're not really siblings to each other, they're more like removed cousins. Some are imbued with fire, others with light, and others with rain and river water. Some have horns and wings while others have lion heads, four limbs, and fur. You can find the oddest combinations! This wild variety isn't limited to appearance, though- you'll find dragons who are friendly and hostile, selfish and most generous. But, whatever else they are, they are always majestic. There is no-one more stunning and formidable than them.Pretend you're sitting by a fire, listening to a wise, wizened storyteller begin to talk...

The Dragon Daughter and Other Lin Lan Fairy Tales by Juwen Zhang Pdf

"Although the influence of the Brothers Grimm on folklore in virtually every country in the West has been widely studied, a similar development in the early part of twentieth-century China is virtually unknown. This book collects and translates more than 40 tales selected from the "Lin Lan" series, published in China from the late 1920s to the early 1930s. The pseudonym "Lin Lan" was created in 1924, when a group of three literary stories about the legendary Xu Wenchang (1521-1593), himself the author of many literary works still popular today, were published in a morning newspaper. The success of this first attempt encouraged the creators to publish more folk tales and fairy tales, which ultimately played a major role in the development of modern folk literature in China. The series, written and developed by a Shanghai publisher under the pen name Lin Lan, was divided into three subgenres-minjian chuanshuo (folk legends/tales), minjian tonghua (folk fairy tales), and minjian qushi (comic folk tales)-published in 43 volumes containing nearly one thousand tales in all. The tales were collected the tales from oral storytellers throughout China in response to a call from the publisher, and combined elements of European fairy-tale literature with traditional Chinese narratives"--

Little Red Riding Hood and the Dragon by Ying Chang Compestine Pdf

Award-winning author Ying Compestine reimagines the classic fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood" from a Chinese perspective By now, you have probably heard the old folk tale about a girl in a red cape. The truth is that the story took place here in China, there wasn’t a woodsman, and I, the gentle wolf, certainly was not the one who ate them. Here is the real story. This is not the story you think you know. In this version of the classic fairy tale, Little Red lives in a village near the Great Wall and trains in kung fu. When she ventures to her grandmother’s to deliver rice cakes and herbal medicine, she encounters something much more fearsome than a wolf—a mighty dragon. With her wits and a sword in hand, Little Red must valiantly defend herself and her grandmother in this vibrant retelling from Ying Chang Compestine and Joy Ang. An author’s note discusses how this reimagining is influenced by Chinese mythology, symbolism, traditional medicine, and other elements of Compestine’s heritage.

The Chinese Fairy Book by Richard Wilhelm Pdf

The fairy tales and legends of olden China have in common with the "Thousand and One Nights" an oriental glow and glitter of precious stones and gold and multicolored silks, an oriental wealth of fantastic and supernatural action. And yet they strike an exotic note distinct in itself. The seventy-three stories here presented after original sources, embracing "Nursery Fairy Tales," "Legends of the Gods," "Tales of Saints and Magicians," "Nature and Animal Tales," "Ghost Stories," "Historic Fairy Tales," and "Literary Fairy Tales," probably represent the most comprehensive and varied collection of oriental fairy tales ever made available for American readers. There is no child who will not enjoy their novel color, their fantastic beauty, their infinite variety of subject. Yet, like the "Arabian Nights," they will amply repay the attention of the older reader as well. Some are exquisitely poetic, such as "The Flower-Elves," "The Lady of the Moon" or "The Herd Boy and the Weaving Maiden"; others like "How Three Heroes Came By Their Deaths Because Of Two Peaches," carry us back dramatically and powerfully to the Chinese age of Chivalry. The summits of fantasy are scaled in the quasi-religious dramas of "The Ape Sun Wu Kung" and "Notscha," or the weird sorceries unfolded in "The Kindly Magician." Delightful ghost stories, with happy endings, such as "A Night on the Battlefield" and "The Ghost Who Was Foiled," are paralleled with such idyllic love-tales as that of "Rose of Evening," or such Lilliputian fancies as "The King of the Ants" and "The Little Hunting Dog." It is quite safe to say that these Chinese fairy tales will give equal pleasure to the old as well as the young. They have been retold simply, with no changes in style or expression beyond such details of presentation which differences between oriental and occidental viewpoints at times compel. It is the writer's hope that others may take as much pleasure in reading them as he did in their translation.
