The French Court and Society, Vol. 1 of 2 by Catherine Charlotte Pdf

Excerpt from The French Court and Society, Vol. 1 of 2: Reign of Louis XVI. And First Empire Nevertheless, a few truly devout and earnest minded men still fearlessly denounced the vices of the age, and proclaimed aloud to that corrupt and sceptical generation that its cup of iniquity was full and retribution at hand. Amongst these the Abbe de Beauvais, Bishop of Senez, was conspicuous; no less for his zeal than the general impressiveness of his oratory. It was he who was appointed to preach before the Court on the above named occasion. Addressing the king, as at that period was customary, the abbe slowly and solemnly repeated his text. Yet forty days, sire, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The French Court and Society, Vol. 2 of 2 by Catherine Charlotte Pdf

Excerpt from The French Court and Society, Vol. 2 of 2: Reign of Louis XVI. And First Empire It was the sth of May, 1789, - One of the most memorable days in the annals of France. The tapestry displayed on the 4th, on the occasion of the procession Of the States General to the Church of St. Louis, still decorated the fronts of. The houses in the principal streets of Versailles. The assembling of the States had brought a further large influx Of visitors from Paris and the adjacent villages and towns, - each estate of the realm being fully represented, - the people, like their delegates, Tar outnumbering the rest. Within the usually quiet precincts of the palace a numerous throng was collected, anxious to catch a glimpse of the aristocratic and high ecclesiasti cal deputies. Some rolled by in gilded chariots befitting the wearers of mitres and plumes. Others, the poorer clergy and humbler members of the T z'ers Etat, compelled to go to and from Paris since the previous evening, and now travel ling together, seemed already inclined to frater nise, - had picked up for their conveyance some very shaky vehicles, which, as well as their horses, had a most tumble-down look. The greater part, however, Of the plebeian deputies, being lodged in the neighborhood, made their way to the Grande Salle des Menus on foot, amidst the vociferous cheering Of the multitude. The Court Society by Norbert Elias Pdf

This classic study of the life of nobility at the royal court of France, especially under Louis XIV, has long been out of print. Elias shows how courtiers and the king himself were entrapped in a web of etiquette and ceremonial, and how their expenses were dictated by their rank rather than their income.

French Society by Sharon Kettering Pdf

This book provides a "birds eye" view of social change in France during the "long seventeenth century" from 1589-1715. One of the most dynamic phases of French history, it covers the reigns of the first three Bourbon kings, Henri IV, Louis XIII, and Louis XIV. The author explores the upheavals in French society during this period through an examination of the bonds which tied various classes and groupings together: including rank, honour, and reputation; family, household and kinship; faith and the Church; and state and obedience to the King. Acting as a social glue against instability and fragmentation, in periods of great transformation some of these social solidarities are eroded whilst new ones emerge. Sharon Kettering shows how nuclear family ties emerged at the expense of extended kinship ties, while traditional rural ties were eroded by a combination of demographic crisis and agricultural stagnation. Urban ties of neighbourhood, sociability and work increased with rapid urbanisation. By 1715, France had become a more peaceful and civilised place, and this book discusses some of the reasons why.
