The French Revolution and Modern French Socialism by Jessica Blanche Peixotto Pdf

Excerpt from The French Revolution and Modern French Socialism: A Comparative Study of the Principles of the French Revolution and the Doctrines of Modern French Socialism On the other hand, there is a real and interesting separation in the social philosophy of the two doctrines. The later theory asks that an additional right be as sured to the individual, and therefore that government assume one new function, and it bases its claim for these changes on an idea of social progress different from that of the Revolutionists. The following pages aim to demonstrate these like nesses and differences. If the matter they present ap pears insufficient or the result of immature judgment, it is hoped it will, in any event, be an inspiration for some stronger work along lines which, it seems to the writer, cannot but be helpful in adding to a better understanding of latter-day problems. The French Revolution and Modern French Socialism by Jessica Blanche Peixotto Pdf

Excerpt from The French Revolution and Modern French Socialism: A Comparative Study of the Principles of the French Revolution and the Doctrines of Modern French Socialism A little more than a hundred years ago, there were in France groups of men radically opposed to the society they saw about them. These men were, moreover, passionately eager to impose upon the nation to which they belonged a new social order which they advocated. Although, strictly speaking, they had no formulated system for social reorganization, these revolutionists of '93 were fairly agreed upon a certain set of theories which have commonly been called the Principles of the French Revolution. The defenders of these principles were the French Irreconcilables of the last century. In France to-day there is a party numbering nearly two million voters. This party sends to the Chamber of Deputies some eighty representatives; it claims to have a municipal majority in Paris, in about thirty of the other large cities, and in twelve hundred of the smaller cities of France; seventy-eight or more among the daily and weekly journals of the nation are said to be devoted to its interests. Persons belonging to this party profess a political creed sharply criticising the established social order, which they stigmatize as retrograde in its influence on society, and enslaving to the individual. Socialism and the Experience of Time by Julian Wright Pdf

How do we make social democracy? Should we seize the unknown possibilities offered by the future, or does real change develop when we focus our attention on the immediate present? The modern tradition of social revolution suggested that the present is precisely the time that needs to be surpassed, but can society change without an intimate focus on today's experience of social injustice? In Socialism and the Experience of Time, Julian Wright asks how socialists in France from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century tried to follow a democratic commitment to the present. The debate about time that emerged in French socialism lay beneath the surface of political arguments within the left. But how did this focus on the present relate to the tradition of revolution in France? What did socialism have to say about social experience in the present, and how did this discussion shape socialism as a movement? Wright examines French socialism's fascination with modern history, through a new reading of Jean Jaurès' multi-authored project to write a 'socialist history' of France since 1789. Then, in four interlocking biographical essays, he analyses the reformist and idealist socialism of the Third Republic, long side-lined in the historical literature. With a sometimes emotional focus on the present times of Benoît Malon, Georges Renard, Marcel Sembat, and Léon Blum, a personal history unfolds that allows us to revisit the traditional narrative of French socialism. This is not so much a story of the future hope for revolution, as an intimate account of socialism, intellectual engagement, and the human present.

The Story of the French Revolution (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Belfort Bax Pdf

Excerpt from The Story of the French Revolution The following Sketch of the course of the French Revolution was originally published during 1889 in serial form in Justice, the weekly organ of the Social Demo' cratic Federation. It has been revised, corrected, and, in some parts, added to, for the present re-issue. It need scarcely be said that it in no way pretends to be a com plete history of the great political, social, and intellectual movement it describes. The present volume is designed primarily as a guide to those who, not having the time to study larger works on the subject, yet wish during these centennial years to have in a small compass a con nected description of the main events of the French Revolution, more especially from the point Of View of modern Socialism. It is undeniable that there are many Englishmen who would indignantly repudiate any'asper sions on their education for whom the French Revolution means little more than the destruction of one institution called the Bastille, the erection of another institution called theguillotine, and the establishment of the Napo leonic Empire on the ruins of both. They have no idea Of the complex forces, economical, speculative, and po litical, which manifested themselves in the succession of crises (scarcely, indeed, of the existence of the crises themselves) which took place between the assembling of the states-general in 1789, _and the suppression of the Babmuf conspiracy in 1796.
