Application-driven Quantum And Statistical Physics: A Short Course For Future Scientists And Engineers - Volume 2: Equilibrium by Jean-michel Gillet Pdf

Bridging the gap between traditional books on quantum and statistical physics, this series is an ideal introductory course for students who are looking for an alternative approach to the traditional academic treatment. This pedagogical approach relies heavily on scientific or technological applications from a wide range of fields. For every new concept introduced, an application is given to connect the theoretical results to a real-life situation. Each volume features in-text exercises and detailed solutions, with easy-to-understand applications.Building on the principles introduced in Volume 1, this second volume explains the structure of atoms, the vibration and rotation of molecules. It describes how this is related to thermodynamics through statistical physics. It is shown that these fundamental achievements help to understand how explosives and CO₂ can be detected, what makes a gecko stick to the ceiling, why old stars do not necessarily collapse, where nuclear energy comes from, and more.

Application-driven Quantum And Statistical Physics: A Short Course For Future Scientists And Engineers - Volume 3: Transitions by Jean-michel Gillet Pdf

Each volume features in-text exercises and detailed solutions, with easy-to-understand applications. This third volume covers several basic and more advanced subjects about transitions in quantum and statistical physics. Part I describes how the quantum statistics of fermions and bosons differ and under what condition they can merge into the classical-particle-statistics framework seen in Volume 2. This section also describes the fundamentals of conductors, semiconductors, superconductors, superfluids and Bose-Einstein condensates. Part II introduces time-dependent transitions between quantum states. The time evolution of a simple two-level model gives the minimum background necessary to understand the principles behind lasers and their numerous applications. Time-dependent perturbation theory is also covered, as well as standard approaches to the scattering of massive particles. A semi-classical treatment of electromagnetic field-matter interaction is described with illustrations taken from a variety of processes such as phonon scattering, charge distribution or spin densities. The third and last part of the book gives a brief overview of quantum electrodynamics with applications to photon absorption or emission spectroscopies and a range of scattering regimes. There follows a short introduction to the role of multiphoton processes in quantum entanglement based experiments.

The Future: A Very Short Introduction by Jennifer M. Gidley Pdf

From the beginning of time, humans have been driven by both a fear of the unknown and a curiosity to know. We have always yearned to know what lies ahead, whether threat or safety, scarcity or abundance. Throughout human history, our forebears tried to create certainty in the unknown, by seeking to influence outcomes with sacrifices to gods, preparing for the unexpected with advice from oracles, and by reading the stars through astrology. As scientific methods improve and computer technology develops we become ever more confident of our capacity to predict and quantify the future by accumulating and interpreting patterns form the past, yet the truth is there is still no certainty to be had. In this Very Short Introduction Jennifer Gidley considers some of our most burning questions: What is "the future "?; Is the future a time yet to come?; Or is it a utopian place?; Does the future have a history?; Is there only one future or are there many possible futures? She asks if the future can ever be truly predicted or if we create our own futures - both hoped for and feared - by our thoughts, feelings, and actions, and concludes by analysing how we can learn to study the future. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

From Darkness to Light (Vol. 2) by Prabuddha Bharata Compilation Pdf

The second volume of 'From Darkness to Light' is a compilation of articles penned by the editors of Prabuddha Bharata, the English journal of the Ramakrishna Order started by Swami Vivekananda in 1896. The articles of the first editor B R Rajam Iyer(1896) to the thirty-sixth editor Swami Narasimhananda (2014) make up this volume. In these writings the readers get a glimpse into the various issues that have been the point of focus right from the early days of the journal in 1896 up to the recent times, how there has been a central idea consistently running through all of them, the idea of the spiritual awakening of humanity and India, and yet how the style of presentation has undergone change over a period of time with the change of editors. This makes for a fascinating reading & study. Published by Advaita Ashrama, a publication house of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, India.
