The Future of Internal Combustion Engines by Antonio Paolo Carlucci Pdf

Based on previsions, the reciprocating internal combustion engine will continue to be widely used in all sectors: transport, industry, and energy production. Therefore, its development, while complying with the limitations of pollutants as well as CO2 emission levels and maintaining or increasing performance, will certainly continue for the next few decades. In the last three decades, a significant effort has been made to reduce pollutant emission levels. More recently, attention has been given to CO2 emission levels too.It is widely recognized that one single technology will not completely solve the problem of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Rather, the different technologies already available will have to be integrated, and new technologies developed, to obtain substantial CO2 abatement.

This book focuses on clean transport and mobility essential to the modern world. It discusses internal combustion engines (ICEs) and alternatives like battery electric vehicles (BEVs) which are growing fast. Alternatives to ICEs start from a very low base and face formidable environmental, material availability, and economic challenges to unlimited and rapid growth. Hence ICEs will continue to be the main power source for transport for decades to come and have to be continuously improved to improve transport sustainability. The book highlights the need to assess proposed changes in the existing transport system on a life cycle basis. The volume includes chapters discussing the challenges faced by ICEs as well as chapters on novel fuels and fuel/ engine interactions which help in this quest to improve the efficiency of ICE and reduce exhaust pollutants. This book will be of interest to those in academia and industry alike.

Advances in Internal Combustion Engines and Fuel Technologies by Hoon Kiat Ng Pdf

This book highlights the important need for more efficient and environmentally sound combustion technologies that utilise renewable fuels to be continuously developed and adopted. The central theme here is two-fold: internal combustion engines and fuel solutions for combustion systems. Internal combustion engines remain as the main propulsion system used for ground transportation, and the number of successful developments achieved in recent years is as varied as the new design concepts introduced. It is therefore timely that key advances in engine technologies are organised appropriately so that the fundamental processes, applications, insights and identification of future development can be consolidated. In the future and across the developed and emerging markets of the world, the range of fuels used will significantly increase as biofuels, new fossil fuel feedstock and processing methods, as well as variations in fuel standards continue to influence all combustion technologies used now and in coming streams. This presents a challenge requiring better understanding of how the fuel mix influences the combustion processes in various systems. The book allows extremes of the theme to be covered in a simple yet progressive way.

Recent Innovations in Internal Combustion Engines by Nicole Maden Pdf

Here's a closer look at utilization and development of renewable fuel based combustion technologies that are environment friendly. The main purpose of this literature is dual: finding fuel alternatives for combustion systems and advances in internal combustion engines. Over the years, while internal combustion engines have been the mainstay for ground transport, there has been wide success achieved in recently, just like the new design concepts introduced. Hence, it is critical to document and organize key advances in engine technologies to consolidate fundamental processes, applications, insights and identification of future development. A considerable increase is predicted in the range of fuels like biofuels, new fossil fuel feedstock and processing methods, especially in the developed and emerging markets. Present and future combustion techniques continue to be influenced by variations in fuel values that make it imperative to comprehend the fuel mixes and its impact on combustion processes in various systems. This is a book that permits a comprehensive coverage of the extremes of the theme, in a simple yet progressive way.

Mixture Formation in Internal Combustion Engines by Carsten Baumgarten Pdf

A systematic control of mixture formation with modern high-pressure injection systems enables us to achieve considerable improvements of the combustion pr- ess in terms of reduced fuel consumption and engine-out raw emissions. However, because of the growing number of free parameters due to more flexible injection systems, variable valve trains, the application of different combustion concepts within different regions of the engine map, etc., the prediction of spray and m- ture formation becomes increasingly complex. For this reason, the optimization of the in-cylinder processes using 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) becomes increasingly important. In these CFD codes, the detailed modeling of spray and mixture formation is a prerequisite for the correct calculation of the subsequent processes like ignition, combustion and formation of emissions. Although such simulation tools can be viewed as standard tools today, the predictive quality of the sub-models is c- stantly enhanced by a more accurate and detailed modeling of the relevant pr- esses, and by the inclusion of new important mechanisms and effects that come along with the development of new injection systems and have not been cons- ered so far. In this book the most widely used mathematical models for the simulation of spray and mixture formation in 3D CFD calculations are described and discussed. In order to give the reader an introduction into the complex processes, the book starts with a description of the fundamental mechanisms and categories of fuel - jection, spray break-up, and mixture formation in internal combustion engines.

Gasoline Compression Ignition Technology by Gautam Kalghatgi,Avinash Kumar Agarwal,Harsh Goyal,Moez Ben Houidi Pdf

This book focuses on gasoline compression ignition (GCI) which offers the prospect of engines with high efficiency and low exhaust emissions at a lower cost. A GCI engine is a compression ignition (CI) engine which is run on gasoline-like fuels (even on low-octane gasoline), making it significantly easier to control particulates and NOx but with high efficiency. The state of the art development to make GCI combustion feasible on practical vehicles is highlighted, e.g., on overcoming problems on cold start, high-pressure rise rates at high loads, transients, and HC and CO emissions. This book will be a useful guide to those in academia and industry.
