The American Negro by Paul Brandon Barringer Pdf

Excerpt from The American Negro: His Past and Future After the preliminary meeting of the Tri-State Medical Society at Virginia Beach, Dr. P.I!. Barringer, of the University of Virginia, was requested by the acting secretary to prepare for the organization meeting of this Society to be held at Charlotte, X.C, a short talk on the raison d'etre for a new medical society in the South. In this address Dr. Barringer took the position that if this was to be conducted as other societies, there was no need for a new society, as there were sixieties in abundance already in existence which devoted themselves to the general needs of the profession, and that if another society was organized it. should be based upon new lines. He suggested that the entire first lav of each meeting of this new society should be devoted to some subject of broad general interest to the profession, such as the negro problem now facing the South, race mortality, inebriety, etc. This suggestion was well received and the negro problem was chosen as the subject for discussion at the next meeting at Charleston, S. C, and Dr. Barringer appointed leader of debate with the request that, he bring in a paper on the influence of heredity upon the negro. Many papers on the negro were read at this Charleston meeting and the subject freely discussed. By the unanimous vote of the Society it was ordered that the papers of Dr. P.B. Barringer and Dr.S. C.Baker should be printed and sent to all the medical societies in the South with the recommendation that they seriously consider the facts therein set forth. Paulus A. Irving, Secretary Tri-State Medical Society. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Negro by John Ambrose Price Pdf

Excerpt from The Negro: Past, Present, and Future The object of this book is to place the negro before the American public just as he lives and moves in the South. His racial peculiarities and limitations are re lated with no malice toward the race, but for the benefit of both races, in order that the white people of the Republic may in vestigate and see the negro as others see and know him. Mistaken ideas regarding the race are more hurtful to the negro than the white man, and if this book can correct only a few mistakes made in the past, its mission to both races will be fulfilled. What the Negro wants and what the country wants to do is to take advantage of all the lessons that were taught during the days of reconstruction, and apply these lessons bravely, honestly, in laying the foundation upon which the Negro can stand in the future and make himself a useful, honourable, and desirable citizen, whether he has his residence in the North, the South, or the West.

The Future of the American Negro by Booker T. Booker T. Washington Pdf

In this volume I shall not attempt to give the origin and history of the Negro race either in Africa or in America. My attempt is to deal only with conditions that now exist and bear a relation to the Negro in America and that are likely to exist in the future. In discussing the Negro, it is always to be borne in mind that, unlike all the other inhabitants of America, he came here without his own consent; in fact, was compelled to leave his own country and become a part of another through physical force. It should also be borne in mind, in our efforts to change and improve the present condition of the Negro, that we are dealing with a race which had little necessity to labour in its native country. After being brought to America, the Negroes were forced to labour for about 250 years under circumstances which were calculated not to inspire them with love and respect for labour. This constitutes a part of the reason why I insist that it is necessary to emphasise the matter of industrial education as a means of giving the black man the foundation of a civilisation upon which he will grow and prosper. When I speak of industrial education, however, I wish it always understood that I mean, as did General Armstrong, the founder of the Hampton Institute, for thorough academic and religious training to go side by side with industrial training. Mere training of the hand without the culture of brain and heart would mean little.

The Negro, Or African-American by George W. Price Jr. Pdf

Excerpt from The Negro, or African-American: His Past, Present and Future; An Ethnological Lecture In presenting this subject, my friends, it may not be deemed improper for me to state that I do not claim to have originated or discovered any new ideas of ethnology. Nor do I presume in my humble effort toward the investigation of this interesting subject, to advance any question of theory or philosophy with which you are unfamiliar. But by a cola tion and compilation of incontestable authorities relative to the antiquity of the negro, and conclusions resulting from a liberal deduction applying to the status of the African American, I hope by thus refreshing your memories and drawing your mindsinto this peculiar channel of investigation, you may find a subject interesting in its consideration, though presented in a crude and unpolished style. Historical Romance of the American Negro (Classic Reprint) by Charles H. Fowler Pdf

Excerpt from Historical Romance of the American Negro For a number of years it has been on my mind to write a book regarding the principal events that have occurred to the colored race since the beginning of the agitation against slavery, going on from thence to the great Rebellion, passing through that war, and also dealing with all subjects of great importance that have arrested our attention under our glorious freedom. At the same time it has occurred to me, as it has to many another writer, that my book would be far more interesting to the general reader, if I were to select a representative woman of our own race, and make her the mouthpiece of all I wished to say; in other words, to introduce the whole under the pleasing form of an historical romance, so that we might keep our heroine constantly before our eyes, and make her weave in a continuous tale of love, travel, war and peace, and thus portray the lady playing her own parts on that tremendous stage of Time that has been set forth for the gaze and astonishment of the whole country during the past fifty years. I hope those members of the general public who favor me by a perusal of my book will be pleased with my plan. "Peace hath her victories, no less renowned than war," and I have introduced into my book all the great advances that our race has made since the fall of Richmond, and, indeed, have brought things down to this year. The reader will find a number of things that are intended to introduce humor, and to brighten the darker portions of the story. And as some fault-finding person may say that I have overdrawn my heroine, and made her far more clever than she could ever have naturally been, I venture to affirm that such a charge can by no means be just, for we have women among us, and men, too, who are as intelligent and clever as can be found among any other race on the face of the earth. I believe my book will prove the truth of this assertion in those cases, at least, where the heroines and heroes of the colored race are mentioned in its pages by name. Beulah Jackson will therefore stand as a representative woman among our own people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. History of the American Negro by Arthur Bunyan Caldwell Pdf

Excerpt from History of the American Negro: South Carolina Edition No race nor people rise as a whole. Spiritual growth, in tellectual enlightenment and physical development are all in dividual matters. Hence biographies of the individuals of a race constitute a record of prime importance both for the present and for future generations. They also furnish the historian with much valuable data. Emerson says There is no history, only biography. Our Editorial Department has not sought to exploit the views or opinions of any party or of any section. The efiort has been made simply to present facts facts about the representative men and women of the race in the State. Both races must be helped by a proper presentation of the facts about the best element of the Negro race. Too long policies have been inaugurated and actions based on a knowledge of the vicious element only. The gathering of the information for these biographies has made it necessary for our representatives to visit every county and every important town in the State. We believe the first-hand information thus gained by hundreds of personal interviews will give the work peculiar value. The biographies have been written frankly from an appreciative point of view, but the efiort has been made by the Editorial Department to avoid anything like fulsome lauda tion. In every nook and corner of the State we have had the most hearty and cordial co-operation for which we are grateful. We believe the South Carolina Volume of this work tells the story of the men and women, who in the main, should be known.
