The Future of the Nineteenth-Century Dream-Child by Amy Billone Pdf

This book investigates the reappearance of the 19th-century dream-child from the Golden Age of Children's Literature, both in the Harry Potter series and in other works that have reached unprecedented levels of popular success today. Discussing Harry Potter as a reincarnation of Lewis Carroll's Alice and J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, Billone goes on to examine the recent resurrection of Alice in Tim Burton's Alice, and of Peter Pan in Michael Jackson and in James Bond. Visiting trends that have emerged since the Harry Potter series ended, the book studies revisions of the dream-child in texts and films that have inspired mass fandom in the twenty-first century: Stephenie Meyer's Twilight, E.L. James's 50 Shades of Grey and Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games. The volume argues that the 21st-century desire to achieve dream-states in relationship to eternal youth results from the way that dreams provide a means of realizing the fantastic yet alarming possibility of escaping from time. This current identification with the dream-child stems from the threat of political unrest and economic and environmental collapse as well as from the simultaneous technophilia and technophobia of a culture immersed in the breathless revolution of the digital age. This book not only explores how the dream-child from the past has returned to reflect misgivings about imagined dystopian futures but also reveals how the rebirth of the dream-child opens up possibilities for new narratives where happy endings remain viable against all odds. It will appeal to scholars in a wide variety of fields including Childhood Studies, Children's/YA Literature, Cinema Studies, Cultural Studies, Cyberculture, Gender Studies, Queer Studies, Gothic Studies, New Media, and Popular Culture.

Culture and Medicine by Rishi Goyal,Arden Hegele Pdf

Charting shared advances across the emerging fields of medical humanities and health humanities, this book engages with the question of how biomedical knowledge is constructed, negotiated, and circulated as a cultural practice. The volume is composed of a series of pathbreaking inter-disciplinary essays that bring sociocultural habits of mind and modes of thought to the study of medicine, health and patients. These juxtapositions create new forms of knowledge, while emphasizing the vulnerability of human bodies, anti-essentialist approaches to biology, a sensitivity to language and rhetoric, and an attention to social justice. These essays dissect the ways that cultural practices define the limits of health and the body: from the body's place and trajectory in the world to how bodies relate to one another, from questions about ageing and sex to what counts as health and illness. Considering how these and other concepts are shaped by a negotiation between medico-scientific knowledge and ways of knowing derived from other domains, this book provides important new insights into how biomedical frameworks become settled forms for broader cultural understanding.

The Fantasy of Family by Elizabeth Thiel Pdf

The myth of the Victorian family remains a pervasive influence within a contemporary Britain that perceives itself to be in social crisis. Nostalgic for a golden age of "Victorian values" in which visions of supportive, united families predominate, the common consciousness, exhorted by social and political discourse, continues to vaunt the "traditional, natural" family as the template by which all other family forms are gauged. Yet this fantasy of family, nurtured and augmented throughout the Victorian era, was essentially a construct that belied the realities of a nineteenth-century world in which orphanhood, fostering, and stepfamilies were endemic. Focusing primarily on British children's texts written by women and drawing extensively on socio-historic material, The Fantasy of Family considers the paradoxes implicit to the perpetuation of the domestic ideal within the Victorian era and offers new perspectives on both nineteenth-century and contemporary society.

The Children of the Future (Classic Reprint) by Nora Archibald Smith Pdf

Excerpt from The Children of the Future It is only another proof of the infinite scope of the Divine plan that such countless myriads of human beings can be born into the world, all built on the same general lines, and yet difiering so widely one from another as to need for their best development climates and training as dissimilar as do the polar bear and the bird of paradise. Through carelessness, through ignorance, through dullness sometimes, indeed, through sheer wickedness many children are no better understood by their parents than if they were natives of another planet. Truth to tell, they often appear to many of us to be strangers and foreigners, though how the tiny creatures, born of our own flesh and blood, and nurtured at our hearthstones, can so differ from one another and from their parents is a problem to puzzle the wisest. Yet, whether this be due to heredity, to pre natal influences, or to the old, old theory of the transmigration of souls, the facts are there, as solid as the hills themselves. Every child difiers from every other child as much as one star differeth from another star in glory, and not until this is understood, and training is given to suit the particular case, can we be sure that the budding human life will not be killed, bent, or stunted by misapplied force. Because the father was well brought up by a particular system, there is no reason to suppose that it will succeed with the son; because the eldest daughter has flourished under certain discipline, we need not therefore conclude that it will fit the youngest equally well. The polar bear must be fed on something besides seeds and fruits if he is to be a model of his kind, and the bird of paradise will pine away before he will reconcile himself to a diet of raw flesh.
