The Gates of Hell Ajar (Classic Reprint) by John Rogers Bolles Pdf

Excerpt from The Gates of Hell Ajar When I think of the crime referred to in these pages, its disregard of law, human and divine, an insult to the Author of our being, a despite to nature itself, and when I think what God has done to adorn and glorify humanity, and of the sacred relation of marital life, ordained in the garden of Eden, honored and blest by His Son, type of heaven, I cannot doubt that the lowest depth of depravity has been reached. The deliberate destruction of one, by those whom God has appointed, with the tenderest ties, to be its guardians and defenders! Blasted be the heart in which such a thought could spring! Smitten be the lips that would hint such a suggestion! Night has no darkness to cover the deed. Ordinary devils are ashamed of them, only the great red dragon, whose tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth can compare with these monsters in sin! They take precedence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Gates Ajar by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Pdf

This brief story is full of pathos, genius, and theology. It is what the Germans call "a story with a tendency;" in other words, a story designed to establish and enforce an opinion. But notwithstanding this, it is not without great merit in plot and character. Perhaps the most remarkable feature is the truth and power with which the feelings are portrayed of one who has lost a nearest and dearest friend. The skill with which the doctrine of the story is defended, and the narrowness of extreme Orthodoxy is set forth and illustrated, is admirable in its way, and is at times irresistible. The gentle and human Christian faith and hope, which are everywhere inspired, -a faith and hope which walk firmly in the rough pathway of earthly duty and sacrifice, while yet "the sufferer constantly looks serenely and almost seraphically into the world of spirits-give to the book its crowning grace and its surpassing excellence. The defects which a critical judgment might detect, are lost sight of in the comparison with its manifold excellencies. The Prince and the Pauper (Illustrated Children's Classic) by Mark Twain Pdf

This eBook edition of "The Prince and the Pauper (Illustrated Children's Classic)" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Set in 1547, The Prince and the Pauper tells the story of two young boys who are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive father in Offal Court off Pudding Lane in London, and Prince Edward, son of King Henry VIII. Tom, the youngest boy in a poor family living in London, has always aspired to a better life, encouraged by the local priest. Loitering around the palace gates one day, he sees the Prince Edward of Wales. Tom is nearly caught and beaten by the Royal Guards, but Edward stops them and invites Tom into his palace chamber. There the two boys get to know one another, fascinated by each other's life and their uncanny resemblance. They decide to switch clothes "temporarily". The Prince momentarily goes outside, quickly hiding an article of national importance (the Great Seal of England), and eventually finding his way to the Canty home. Tom, posing as the prince, tries to cope with court customs and manners. His fellow nobles and palace staff think "the prince" has an illness which has caused memory loss and fear he will go mad. They repeatedly ask him about the missing "Great Seal", but he knows nothing about it. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He is best known for his two novels – The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but his satirical stories and travel books are also widely popular. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned him praise from critics and peers. He was lauded as the greatest American humorist of his age.

Classical Mythology in English Literature by Geoffrey Miles Pdf

Classical Mythology in English Literature brings together a range of English versions of three classical myths. It allows students to explore the ways in which they have been reinterpreted and reinvented by writers throughout history. Beginning with a concise introduction to the principle Greco-Roman gods and heroes, the anthology then focuses on three stories: * Orpheus, the great musician and his quest to free his wife Eurydice from death * Venus and Adonis, the love goddess and the beautiful youth she loved * Pygmalion, the master sculptor who fell in love with his creation. Each section begins with the classical sources and ends with contemporary versions, showing how each myth has been used/abused or appropriated since its origins
