The state of happiness which prevailed throughout the island is recorded in the verses subjoined: The most renowned Bryen Boiroimhe Govcrn'd the isle in peace; and through his reign The Irish were a brave and wealthy people, And wars and discords ceased. The historians of those times reckon this excellent prince in the number of the heroic and munificent kings that sat upon the throne of this kingdom. They always mention him as the third whose conduct and heroic virtues raised the reputation of the Irish, and made them formidable to their enemies. The first of these excellent monarchs they esteem to be Conaire the great, the son of Eidirsgeoil; the second was Cormac, the son of Art, soil of Conn, the renowned hero of the hundred battles; and the third was the most illustrious Bryen Boiroimhe, king of Ireland. This magnificent prince supported his royal grandeur by a splendid court, and kept a most sumptuous and hospitable table suited to his dignity. The quantity of provisions that were daily consumed is scarce credible. The place of his residence was Ceann Coradh, where his retinue was becoming the majesty of an Irish monarch, and whither the three provinces of the island brought their subsidies and contributions, which were very large, to defray the expenses of his royal court, beside the constant revenue which arose from the two provinces of Munster, and was paid yearly into his exchequer.
