The Gentleman's Magazine, often considered the first magazine, was one of the most famous and successful periodicals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Edited by such luminaries as Edward Cave, Samuel Johnson and John Nichols it was always solid and serious, its position eventually being usurped by the Edinburgh Review and Quarterly Review. The chief hindrances to scholars who would like to explore this vast treasure-house are both its size and the unavailability of complete sets.
