Medicinal Plants of Central Asia: Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan by Sasha W. Eisenman,David E. Zaurov,Lena Struwe Pdf

This unique book is a collaborative effort between researchers at Rutgers University and colleagues from numerous institutions in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. It will be the first book to document more than 200 of the most important medicinal plants of Central Asia, many whose medicinal uses and activities are being described in English for the first time. The majority of the plants described grow wild in Central Asia with some being endemic, while other species have been introduced to Central Asia but are commonly used in regional plant based medicine. The book contains four introductory chapters. The first and second chapters cover the geography, climate and vegetation of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, respectively. The third chapter provides a brief history of medicinal plant use and science in Central Asia and the fourth chapter contains general information about phytochemistry. The fifth chapter comprises the bulk of the book and covers 208 medicinal plant species. Nearly all species have one or more high quality, color photographs. Three useful appendices have been included. The first is a glossary of botanical and ecological terms, the second is a glossary of chemistry terms and the third is a glossary of medical terms. During the preparation of this manuscript we found there to be a deficiency in quality reference resources for the translation of many of the technical terms associated with the different branches of science covered in this book. In order to make our job easier we compiled glossaries over the course of preparing the manuscript and have included them feeling that they will be an extremely valuable resource for readers.

Nationalism in Central Asia by Nick Megoran Pdf

Nick Megoran explores the process of building independent nation-states in post-Soviet Central Asia through the lens of the disputed border territory between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. In his rich "biography" of the boundary, he employs a combination of political, cultural, historical, ethnographic, and geographic frames to shed new light on nation-building process in this volatile and geopolitically significant region. Megoran draws on twenty years of extensive research in the borderlands via interviews, observations, participation, and newspaper analysis. He considers the problems of nationalist discourse versus local vernacular, elite struggles versus borderland solidarities, boundary delimitation versus everyday experience, border control versus resistance, and mass violence in 2010, all of which have exacerbated territorial anxieties. Megoran also revisits theories of causation, such as the loss of Soviet control, poorly defined boundaries, natural resource disputes, and historic ethnic clashes, to show that while these all contribute to heightened tensions, political actors and their agendas have clearly driven territorial aspirations and are the overriding source of conflict. As this compelling case study shows, the boundaries of the The Ferghana Valley put in succinct focus larger global and moral questions of what defines a good border.

Introduction to Uzbekistan by Gilad James, PhD Pdf

Introduction to Uzbekistan provides an overview of the country's history, culture, and geography. Located in Central Asia, Uzbekistan was once a part of the Soviet Union but gained independence in 1991. The ethnic makeup of the country is primarily Uzbek, with significant minority populations of Tajiks, Kazakhs, and Russians. The country's official language is Uzbek, but Russian is also widely spoken. Uzbekistan is known for its ancient cities and rich Islamic heritage, with many beautiful mosques and mausoleums dotting the landscape. The country is also home to the famous Silk Road, an ancient trade route that once connected China and Europe. Modern Uzbekistan is undergoing rapid development, with new infrastructure projects and tourism initiatives aimed at boosting the economy. Despite these changes, the country retains much of its traditional charm, with colorful bazaars and bustling street markets showcasing the best of Uzbek cuisine and culture.
