Publishers Weekly Top 10 Best of the Year In her new collection, Story Prize finalist Maureen F. McHugh delves into the dark heart of contemporary life and life five minutes from now and how easy it is to mix up one with the other. Her stories are post-bird flu, in the middle of medical trials, wondering if our computers are smarter than us, wondering when our jobs are going to be outsourced overseas, wondering if we are who we say we are, and not sure what we'd do to survive the coming zombie plague. Praise for Maureen F. McHugh: "Gorgeously crafted stories."—Nancy Pearl, NPR "Hauntingly beautiful."—Booklist "Unpredictable and poetic work."—The Plain Dealer Maureen F. McHugh has lived in New York; Shijiazhuang, China; Ohio; Austin, Texas; and now lives in Los Angeles, California. The Making of Europe by R. Graham Park Pdf

The continent of Europe, as a recognizable geographic entity, attained roughly its present shape around 20 million years ago. Even since then, the European coastline has undergone significant changes, due mainly to sea-level movements. This book relates how Europe has been assembled through geological time by the accretion of various distinct geological components, some of which have travelled a considerable distance across the globe to reach their present positions. It is written for those who are curious about the shape, variety, and origins of the continent of Europe. How did the continent come to adopt certain shapes as presented on maps? Why are there such distinct regions and landscapes, ranging from the wide plains of Northern Europe to the mountains of the South? Illustrated in color, with technical terms kept to a minimum, The Making of Europe: A Geological History will educate all those who travel in Europe and who are interested in the study of geology. *** "Profusely illustrated throughout, 'The Making of Europe: A Geological History' by Graham Park is extraordinarily well written, organized and presented, making it an informed and informative read that would be of value to students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in geology. ...very strongly recommended for both academic and community library Geology Studies reference collections and supplemental studies reading lists." - Midwest Book Review, Small Press Bookwatch, The Geology Shelf, January 2015 *** "...[includes] over 100 illustrations, maps, and photographs and over 300 geologic terms and names....explained in an extensive glossary cross-indexed to the text. ...the book is a cross between a geological dictionary, gazetteer, and historical atlas, and a standard geologic history. Recommended. All levels/libraries" -- Choice, Vol. 52, No. 9, May 2015 [Subject: Geology, Earth Science, Natural Science]~~

Pre-Permian Geology of Central and Eastern Europe by R.D. Dallmeyer,W. Franke,K. Weber Pdf

In August 1990, Project 233 of the International Geological Correlation Program hosted an international conference in G6ttingen/Giessen, Germany. Discussions were focused on the Tectonothermal and Stratigraphic Evolution of the Central European Orogens. The meeting marked the first opportunity for completely open scientific exchange following the recent political reformations in central Europe. This exciting new atmosphere of international cooperation resulted in presentation of a wealth of information which was new to scientists from both sides of former political boundaries. It was apparent that a unique opportunity was available to prepare a systematic overview in a volume dealing with the geology of Central Europe. The present book represents an outgrowth of this conference, but is not merely a compilation of the papers presented in G6ttingen/Giessen. Instead, it represents a coordinated volume designed to present a balanced, comprehensive view of our present understanding of the tectonothermal and stratigraphic evolution of the Central European orogens. We gratefully acknowledge the help of the national funding agencies, who have financed much of the research work summarized in this book, and of the Interna tional Geological Correlation Programme (IGCP, project no. 233) which provided and helped to finance the organisational framework. We are indebted to Springer-Verlag for thorough copy-editing and production of this book, and we sincerely appreciate the efforts of all the reviewers whose com ments have greatly helped to improve the quality of this volume. We also thank the various contributors for their diligence and perseverance in manuscript preparation.

Encyclopedia of European and Asian Regional Geology by E.M. Moores,Rhodes W. Fairbridge Pdf

This unique volume, organized alphabetically by country, provides a current overview of the general geology of Europe and Asia, excluding the Arab countries and Israel. Articles primarily contain information about the stratigraphy, structure, tectonics and natural resources of each country, as well as a history of geological exploration and other issues unique to each country. Additional articles cover international subjects such as Europe, Asia, the Alps, Caucasus, Himalayas and Tien Shan mountains. Many articles are new syntheses, e.g. those on Iceland, Burma and the Philippines; some are first-time descriptions in English, e.g. those on Estonia, Moldova, Bosnia and Turkmenistan; others are published for the first time ever in any language e.g. those articles on Italy, Korea and Vietnam. Each entry is typically written by a native geologist or a geologist with extensive experience in the region, and entries include representative figures illustrating main geologic features and a selected bibliography of relevant publications generally accessible in libraries. Articles are written assuming some general geological background. The Encyclopedia will serve as a valuable source book for libraries, and will be a key reference for academic and professional personnel in industrial exploration firms and governmental agencies, as well as for university students.
