The German Accent in English by Clara S. Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Freiburg, language: English, abstract: An accent almost always makes the conversation partner come to any sort of prejudgement of the speaker. It might sound unpleasant, as in the case of German accents from the view of some English speakers, or can lead to misunderstandings. Therefore, it is important for learners of English as a second language to pay attention to their pronunciation from the beginning. I will analyse which contrasts between English and German exist and further look into the most common mistakes of learners and misperceptions that lead to a characteristic German accent. We can assume that there are mispronunciations with different degrees of ‘graveness’, depending on the probability to cause misunderstandings. So in the following, I will turn to the question why pronunciation should not be neglected in teaching and what corrections language teachers should give priority to in the teaching of phonology. The chapter on teaching mainly refers to the teaching of German students in secondary schools. The assumptions can however be transferred onto other teaching situations. I will show that the teaching of pronunciation will always have to be adapted to the learners’ individual language environment as this is bound to strongly influence their accent.

Germany by Neil MacGregor Pdf

From Neil MacGregor, the author of A History of the World in 100 Objects, this is a view of Germany like no other Today, as the dominant economic force in Europe, Germany looms as large as ever over world affairs. But how much do we really understand about it, and how do its people understand themselves? In this enthralling new book, Neil MacGregor guides us through the complex history, culture and identity of this most mercurial of countries by telling the stories behind 30 objects in his uniquely magical way. Beginning with the fifteenth-century invention of the Gutenberg press, MacGregor ventures beyond the usual sticking point of the Second World War to get to the heart of a nation that has given us Luther and Hitler, the Beetle and Brecht - and remade our world again and again. This is a view of Germany like no other. Neil MacGregor has been Director of the British Museum since August 2002. He was Director of the National Gallery in London from 1987 to 2002. His celebrated books include A History of the World in 100 Objects, now translated into more than a dozen languages and one of the top-selling titles ever published by Penguin Press, and Shakespeare's Restless World.

The Woman with the German Accent by Anita Gertrude Roesch Plutte Pdf

Many East Germans illegally escaped through Berlin before the wall was built. Freedom was possible if one could convince the guards there was a good reason to enter the Western side. Anita Plutte was one of those who found a way...... "It was December 1955, and I had just said a long, tearful, fearful good bye to my sister Renate. I found myself walking across the Berlin bridge with Frau Fischer. I hoped I was doing the right thing. When we got about halfway across, a young guard stopped us by holding up his hand and blocking our path. 'Where are you going? How long will you be there? What is the purpose of your visit?' The blonde guard on the bridge on the East Berlin side was probably only 20 years old - just a little younger than I was at the time. My mouth was dry from the nervousness I was feeling. My throat was closed. I could not answer. My heart was pounding so hard, I could feel it pushing against my chest. My clothes were sticking to my back from the nervous sweat. I just looked down. I could not meet his eye. What I was about to do was so against my nature, yet from somewhere within I was determined to try." ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Anita Plutte resides in Southeastern Pennsylvania at a cozy retirement community. Writing has become one of her passionate hobbies. She grew up in Germany during WWII and escaped from East Germany as a young adult searching for peace and happiness. The rosy life she imagined she would have in the United States never became a reality. As a result of trials and disappointments, she realized that true happiness could only be found in knowing God and Jesus Christ.

Issues in Accents of English by Ewa Waniek-Klimczak Pdf

Adopting a central theme of variability, the book explores different aspects of native and non-native accents of English. The dominating perspective is that of a non-native speaker, although – as argued by some contributors – the very distinction between native and non-native English may need to be redefined. As the debate on the pronunciation of English as a lingua franca continues, this volume presents well-focused studies investigating the acquisition and use of the sound system by native and non-native speakers, problems with the choice and variability in pronunciation models and pedagogical aspects of pronunciation instruction. The issue of accents calls for a comprehensive approach; this book aims to provide such a broad perspective, based on expertise and experience of the contributors, who are specialist in linguitics, applied linguitics, phonetics, phonology and ESL. The book is divided into three parts. Part one discusses complex conditioning of production and perception of native and non-native accents. It contains acoustic and auditory studies investigating the effect of such independent variables as identity, L1 or contextual factors on the elements of the sound system. Part two links the accent variability studies to the pedagogical context by presenting problems with the pronunciation model, its choice and variability. The main focus of part three is on pronunciation teaching: papers presented in this section report on the methods and results of phonetic instruction in different settings.
