The Gospel and the Land of Promise by Philip A. F. Church,Tim Bulkeley,Tim Meadowcroft,Peter Walker Pdf

Today the "land of promise" is a spark in the tinder dry atmosphere of Middle Eastern affairs. Events there continue to wield influence among peoples and in places well beyond the region itself. This raises for Christians the acute theological problem of how to relate to the "land of promise" today and in light of the land of the Bible. Our hope is that this volume of essays will contribute to a more informed and theologically coherent response to the "Land of Promise." It is offered here in the name of peace for all peoples in that place and among those who continue to look to her as a place of promise.

The Ministry of the Word, Vol 21, No. 12 by Various Authors Pdf

This issue of The Ministry of the Word contains the remaining nine messages given during the spring 2002 term of the full-time training in Anaheim, California. The general subject of this series of messages is "Christ and the Church in the Psalms." The progression of the revelation through the Psalms may be encapsulated by four major themes--Christ, house, city, and earth. Psalm 40 speaks concerning the will of God, which is to have Christ as the replacement for all the offerings in the Old Testament. In the New Testament we now enjoy Christ as everything in living and practicing the Body life for the building up of the Body of Christ. Concerning Christ, Psalm 45 shows the direct praising of Christ as the King in His fairness, in His victory, in His kingdom, and in the sweetness of His virtues. Psalm 45 also shows the indirect praising of the King in the praising of God's corporate queen, as the duplication and reproduction of the King. Christ came down to our level, becoming our species, so that He could court us, woo us, win us, and gain us. Furthermore, He came into us to dispense Himself into our entire being to make us the same as He is in life and nature so that we would become His queen for His duplication, reproduction, expression, and glory in the universe. In this psalm we also have the praising of the King in the praising of His sons, the princes, who signify the overcomers reigning with Christ over the nations. In Psalms 46 through 48 we see that a king must have not only a place to live but also a city, a kingdom, as a realm to rule and reign. In Psalm 46 we see that when God has the church enlarged, strengthened, and built up as the city, He has a place to rule and reign. In Psalms 47 and 48 we see that there is a great King over all the earth enthroned in the city. Before the Lord comes manifestly to be the King in the literal city of Jerusalem, He must first be the King in a spiritual, heavenly, divine, and mystical city, and that city is the enlarged, strengthened, and built-up church. When the church is enlarged, strengthened, and built up, the house of God becomes the city of God as the kingdom of God [4] for the God-King to rule and reign. The church is for the kingdom; that is, the house is for the city. Eventually, the house of God becomes the holy city, the New Jerusalem. At the end of Psalm 48 God is revealed as the God of the city, the God in the city, and the God who is experienced and enjoyed only in the city under the rule of the God-King. As seen in Psalm 51, repentance and confession with God's forgiveness are very crucial for us to live the life of a God-man day by day and for us to be in the reality of the Body. The issue and goal of our repenting and confessing is God's purpose--God's building, which is the church consummating in the New Jerusalem. Psalm 68 is the highest psalm, because it reveals Christ, the house, the city, and the earth. Christ builds up the house; the house spreads into the kingdom as the city; and when the kingdom comes, Christ gains the whole earth. In this psalm we can see the nine steps of God's move on the earth in Christ as the living embodiment of the Triune God. Psalm 69, a psalm of David, speaks of Christ's sufferings in a detailed way, as typified by the suffering David. We cannot participate in the afflictions that Jesus Christ suffered to accomplish redemption; however, we need to have much fellowship in Christ's sufferings for the church, that is, for the building up of the Body of Christ (cf. Phil. 3:10). In Psalm 72, a psalm of Solomon, we see that the Lord's kingdom will spread to the ends of the earth by His flowing and watering as a river. Before we can know Him as the reigning Christ, we need to know Him as the suffering Christ. Christ's reigning in resurrection follows His suffering in incarnation and human living. Popular Culture and the Transformation of Japan–Korea Relations by Rumi Sakamoto,Stephen Epstein Pdf

This book presents essays exploring the ways in which popular culture reflects and engenders ongoing changes in Japan–Korea relations. Through a broad temporal coverage from the colonial period to the contemporary, the book’s chapters analyse the often contradictory roles that popular culture has played in either promoting or impeding nationalisms, regional conflict and reconciliations between Japan and Korea. Its contributors link several key areas of interest in East Asian Studies, including conflicts over historical memories and cultural production, grassroots challenges to state ideology, and the consequences of digital technology in Japan and South Korea. Taking recent discourse on Japan and South Korea as popular cultural superpowers further, this book expands its focus from mainstream entertainment media to the lived experience of daily life, in which sentiments and perceptions of the "popular" are formed. It will be useful to students and scholars of Japanese and Korean studies, as well as film studies, media studies and cultural studies more widely. Evangelical Pharisees by Michael Reeves Pdf

In This Follow-Up to Gospel People, Michael Reeves Calls Evangelicals Away from Pharisaism to True Reformation Scripture warns believers of hypocrisy—called the "leaven of the Pharisees"—and its potential to spread quickly in the church. Outwardly appearing as devout religion, this legalism hides destructive pride, idolatry, and even apostasy. Unfortunately, pharisaism is still a problem among evangelicals today. How does Jesus instruct the church to recognize and defeat one of its deepest theological issues? In this clear, compelling call to spiritual reformation, Michael Reeves helps believers reject pharisaism and embrace gospel integrity. Studying 3 essentials of Christian doctrine that the Pharisees misunderstood—their approach to Scripture, understanding of salvation, and disregard of regeneration—Reeves shows readers how to embrace a biblical, Trinitarian, and creedal understanding of the gospel necessary for true reformation. Explains the 3 Essential R's of the Gospel: Teaches readers about revelation, redemption, and regeneration A Great Resource for Pastors and Congregations: Addresses the threat of hypocrisy in the church, and tackles in-house issues from partisanship to pragmatism A Follow-Up to Gospel People: Reeves continues his study of timely evangelical topics

The Gospel of Matthew, vol. 2 by Walter T. Wilson Pdf

What was the original purpose of the Gospel of Matthew? For whom was it written? In this magisterial two-volume commentary, Walter Wilson interprets Matthew as a catechetical work that expresses the ideological and institutional concerns of a faction of disaffected Jewish followers of Jesus in the late first century CE. Wilson’s compelling thesis frames Matthew’s Gospel as not only a continuation of the biblical story but also as a didactic narrative intended to shape the commitments and identity of a particular group that saw itself as a beleaguered, dissident minority. Thus, the text clarifies Jesus’s essential Jewish character as the “Son of David” while also portraying him in opposition to prominent religious leaders of his day—most notably the Pharisees—and open to cordial association with non-Jews. Through meticulous engagement with the Greek text of the Gospel, as well as relevant primary sources and secondary literature, Wilson offers a wealth of insight into the first book of the New Testament. After an introduction exploring the background of the text, its genre and literary features, and its theological orientation, Wilson explicates each passage of the Gospel with thorough commentary on the intended message to first-century readers about topics like morality, liturgy, mission, group discipline, and eschatology. Scholars, students, pastors, and all readers interested in what makes the Gospel of Matthew distinctive among the Synoptics will appreciate and benefit from Wilson’s deep contextualization of the text, informed by his years of studying the New Testament and Christian origins.
