The Graphic World of Paul Peter Piech by Paul Peter Piech,Zoé Whitley Pdf

The first monograph on acclaimed Brooklyn-born, UK-based designer Paul Peter Piech, this volume brings together 120 key works from the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the University of Reading in the UK. Having worked as a printmaker producing prints, posters and books for much of his career, Piech's own pieces often carried stylistic traces of the advertising industry, giving his works a bold, rugged style that became immediately recognizable. His graphic images--sometimes joyful, sometimes angry, but always inventive--tackled the political concerns of the late twentieth century, imbuing them with his forthright personal beliefs (Piech was an ardent pacifist). The Graphic World of Paul Peter Piech collects Piech's most vibrant works, and includes a text by curator and art historian Zoe Whitley that traces the artist's biography and stylistic influences, offering the reader a contextualizing vision for this influential designer's career. Paul Peter Piech (1920-1996) was a graphic artist, printer and publisher. He studied at Cooper Union and worked in advertising before being posted to Cardiff during the Second World War. Settling in Britain after the war, he worked in advertising and then as a freelance graphic artist, and set up his own press (the Taurus Press) in 1959 to print and disseminate more politically committed work.

Roy DeCarava: Light Break by Anonim Pdf

Light Break presents the first survey since 1996 of photographer Roy DeCarava, an essential figure of American art and culture, whose “poetry of vision” re-forms urban life, labor, love, and jazz into the discovery of “an intimate, emotional arc of transformation.” Though DeCarava often refrained from public discussion of his work, this catalogue provides important background into determining factors of his aesthetic sensibility—his traditional training in painting and printmaking as well as his philosophical undertakings. It brings the viewer to a consideration of contradictory precepts in DeCarava’s work that seeks resolution through tonal and structural elements within the image. Light Break presents a wide-ranging selection of DeCarava’s photographs accompanied by a preface by Zoé Whitley, an American curator based in London, and features an introduction and essay by curator and art historian Sherry Turner DeCarava. Titled “Celebration,” Turner DeCarava’s essay considers the artist’s singular poetic vision, his timeless portrayals of individuals and places, and his mastery of composition and photographic printmaking. “In making photographs, as in life, DeCarava was patient. Possessing both a peerless self-awareness and acute observational skills, he knew intuitively when to wait and when to open the camera’s shutter. In the dark room, he availed himself of these same attributes, moving with steady assurance to develop his prints so as to allow the full range of what he called his “infinite scale of grey tones”—often realized at the deepest end of the spectrum—to emerge slowly and fully.” This exquisite volume showcases a dynamic range of images that underscore DeCarava’s subtle mastery of tonal and spatial elements across a wide, fascinating array of subject matter: from the figural implications of smoke and debris to the “shimmering mirror beneath a mother as she walks with her children in the morning light.” These photographs express a strength of imagery—an intent to synchronize and honor the pulse of art as an emergent signal for creative and revelatory freedom.

Teaching Tech Together by Greg Wilson Pdf

Hundreds of grassroots groups have sprung up around the world to teach programming, web design, robotics, and other skills outside traditional classrooms. These groups exist so that people don't have to learn these things on their own, but ironically, their founders and instructors are often teaching themselves how to teach. There's a better way. This book presents evidence-based practices that will help you create and deliver lessons that work and build a teaching community around them. Topics include the differences between different kinds of learners, diagnosing and correcting misunderstandings, teaching as a performance art, what motivates and demotivates adult learners, how to be a good ally, fostering a healthy community, getting the word out, and building alliances with like-minded groups. The book includes over a hundred exercises that can be done individually or in groups, over 350 references, and a glossary to help you navigate educational jargon.

Come Alive! by Corita,Julie Ault Pdf

"Admired by Charles and Ray Eames, Buckminster Fuller and Saul Bass, Sister Corita Kent (1918-1986) was one of the most innovative and unusual pop artist of the 1960s, battling the political and religious establishments, revolutionizing graphic design and encouraging creativity of thousands of people--all while living and practicing as a Catholic nun in California. Mixing advertising slogans and poetry in her prints and commandeering nuns and students to help make ambitious installations, processions and banners, Sister Corita's work is now recognized as some of the most striking--and joyful--American art of the 60s. But, at the end of the decade and at the height of her fame and prodigious work rate, she left the convent where she had spent her adult life. Julie Ault's book ls the first to examine Corita's life and career, containing more than 90 illustrations, many reproduced for the first time, capturing the artist's use of vibrant and day-glo colors."--Page 4 of cover.

Pirate Nightmare Vice Explosion by Michael Kupperman Pdf

Summary: "In the late 1990s, Michael Kupperman bought a stack of men's magazines from the 1950s and 1960s. On examining them, he discovered that their original owner had tampered with them, using the contents to form his own hybrid magazines. This reordering, censoring and selecting, made the sensation-crazed originals even stranger. Pirate Nightmare Vice Explosion presents highlights from that collection, and takes place in a murky, monochromatic world where mysterious, energetic sin is always happening behind closed doors. Some of it is factual; some of it smells of heady invention."--Page 4 of cover.

Greetings from the Barricades by Tobie Mathew Pdf

Amid the chaos and violence of the 1905 Revolution in Russia, the Tsar's opponents printed and distributed vast quantities of picture postcards. Easy to share, hide and smuggle, postcards were a way to beat the censor and spread a message of defiance. Produced by a diverse set of revolutionaries, liberals and opportunists, the content of these cards is equally wide-ranging: from satirical caricatures directed against the government to rare photographs of revolutionary demonstrations. Many of the cards are darkly humorous, combining laughter with a sense of raw indignation at the injustices of Imperial Russia. Assembled by Tobie Mathew, a writer and historian specializing in Russian graphic art and propaganda, Greetings from the Barricadesis the first major study of the design, production and distribution of these cards, featuring more than 200 images. Together, they form a rich body of political art that illustrates the danger of opposing the regime during this turbulent era.

The Jet Age Compendium by David Brittain,Eduardo Paolozzi Pdf

"From 1967, up until his death, Eduardo Paolozzi was involved with the innovative British literary magazine Ambit, using its pages as a space for some of his most experimental and innovative creations, pushing at the boundary between text and image. Collages, visual essays and fragments from novels, drawing on pop culture images from newspapers, magazines and advertisements. Reprinted in their entirety for the first time, Paolozzi's works for Ambit tackle the war in Vietnam, the acceleration of Japanese technology, and the utopias of mass advertising. The Jet Age Compendium reproduces the Paolozzi pages from Ambit along with magazine covers, poems and advertisements that originally appeared alongside the artist's work. The book is housed in a day-glo pink sleeve that also contains an essay written by David Brittain which puts Paolozzi's work for the magazine into context"-- Publisher's website.

The Art of Smallfilms by Jonny Trunk,Richard Embray Pdf

Working from a barn in Kent, Postgate and Firmin produced some of the best-loved children's television of the 1960s and 1970s, including Bagpuss, The Clangers, Ivor The Engine and Noggin The Nog. This book presents the Smallfilms archive - the puppets and cut-outs from these series, along with insights into how they were made. It's a book full of pipe cleaners, cotton wool, wire and ping-pong balls, and celebrates the imagination and ingenuity of two artists who shaped the childhoods of a generation. Introduction by Jonny Trunk, Foreword by Stewart Lee: 'Jonny Trunk has taken the astonishingly thorough archive of Smallfilms... and presented it as one would a collection of artefacts in an exhibition detailing some much-admired 20th century art movement, like Fluxus or Dada. The Smallfilms' partnership's sacred relics repay his trust, and our repeated viewings.' Stewart Lee.
