The Greatest Generation: One Airman's Life by Richard Henneberry Pdf

S/Sgt Michael R Henneberry's B-17 was shot down on his first mission during the second raid on Schweinfurt in October 1943 - the "Black Thursday" that still lives in Air Force lore. A guest of the Third Reich in the infamous Stalag 17B until war's end, he returned home with shattered health. He was never reported by the Germans as a POW and, described as missing in action by the US government, was presumed dead by family and friends. On arriving home in 1945 he received what he thought was a cold reception and departed for parts unknown, reenlisting in the AAF in 1946. He had no contact with any family member for 25 years until he was "rediscovered" by a nephew with the identical name in a remarkable coincidence in Pearl Harbor in 1983, and so the old soldier was reintroduced to family and friends. He now rests in Arlington National Cemetery with the US Air Force Memorial standing guard over his grave. This is the story of his life, told as a true story documented with official Air Force records and interspersed with elements of historical fiction.

What We Lost of the Greatest Generation by Charles Rodenbough Pdf

A biography of Lt. Victor H. Idol, Jr., who was an American pilot shot down June 17, 1944 during the days of the Normandy Invasion. When he landed behind German lines, he was shot by the SS. His story is typical of the men who lost their lives in that conflict and have become known as the "Greatest Generation." He enlisted before Pearl Harbor and his life ended just after his 24th birthday. The record takes him from his college days when he became a student pilot and through his military training. Out of England, he flew his Thunderbolt over the battlefields of Europe through the invasion of Normandy. He sought no glory. He served as his duty to the United States. His family suffered through the uncertainty of "Missing in Action" and the delayed grief of "Killed in Action." The Allies were victorious. The memorabilia of his life and service have been preserved by his family in his foot locker. Sixty nine years later, they have been archived at the Museum & Archives of Rockingham County (MARC).

In the Shadow of the Greatest Generation by Melinda L. Pash Pdf

Largely overshadowed by World War II’s “greatest generation” and the more vocal veterans of the Vietnam era, Korean War veterans remain relatively invisible in the narratives of both war and its aftermath. Yet, just as the beaches of Normandy and the jungles of Vietnam worked profound changes on conflict participants, the Korean Peninsula chipped away at the beliefs, physical and mental well-being, and fortitude of Americans completing wartime tours of duty there. Upon returning home, Korean War veterans struggled with home front attitudes toward the war, faced employment and family dilemmas, and wrestled with readjustment. Not unlike other wars, Korea proved a formative and defining influence on the men and women stationed in theater, on their loved ones, and in some measure on American culture. In the Shadow of the Greatest Generation not only gives voice to those Americans who served in the “forgotten war” but chronicles the larger personal and collective consequences of waging war the American way.

Tuskegee Airman, 4th Edition by Charlene E. McGee Pdf

Colonel Charles E. McGee fought in World War II, in Korea and in Vietnam. He holds the record for the highest three-war total of fighter combat missions of any pilot in the U.S. Air Force history. His military service began as one of the Tuskegee Airmen in the 332nd, famed pioneers who fought racial prejudices to fly and fight for their country in World War II. They are the ones who achieved the unequaled record of not losing a single bomber under their escort to enemy fighters. COL McGee went on to serve in leadership and command positions in war and in peace flying fighter missions in Korea and Vietnam. In his remarkable military career, he earned the Legion of Merit with Cluster, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Bronze Star and the Air Medal (twenty-five times). He was also chosen to lead the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. into the 21st Century by serving two separate terms as its president. Stories in the media seldom portray African American men as heroes. In tribute to the many unheralded fathers, husbands, sons and brothers leading exemplary lives, COL (Chuck) McGee' inspiring story is now being told. Colonel McGee is the latest to be inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame for having flown 409 combat missions.

One of the Greatest Generation by Ronald Soucy Pdf

I grew up in Collinsville, Connecticut during the Great Depression, was sworn into the Navy on my seventeenth birthday, and spent three years on the destroyer, USS Ringgold. There is nothing unique about that. Millions of people all over the world survived the Depression. Millions more lived through World War II. Nowhere near as many faced the end of the war as a twenty-year old high school drop out, emotionally hurting, not knowing what to do about it, or that I needed help. This is the story of that struggle; at the age of twenty-five becoming a follower of Jesus through the guidance of a Presbyterian minister, three years later entering college, and then seminary. This is what it was like to be redeemed from the scrap heap of life.

American Airman in the Belgian Resistance by Jerome W. Sheridan Pdf

In May of 1944, American airman Gerald E. Sorensen was shot down over Nazi occupied Belgium. The Belgian Resistance recovered Sorensen and sheltered him in the home of the Abeels family. Friendship between Sorensen and the Abeels blossomed and they came to consider each other as family. The Abeels were active in the Resistance and Sorensen ultimately volunteered to join his Belgian brother Roger Abeels in the Secret Army. Just moments before the British Army arrived to liberate the village of Marcq-lez-Enghien, Sorensen and Abeels were killed in combat with the Nazis, fighting side-by-side. This book tells Sorensen's story: his upbringing, education, marriage and military service; his evasion of capture and kinship with the Abeels; his experience in the Resistance; his final combat and his impact on those he left behind. But this book is more than a biography. It recounts the courageous struggle of the Belgians who risked everything to save Allied airmen and explains why Sorensen and Abeels are extraordinary symbols of the enduring values at the heart of today's transatlantic alliance.

A Story of One by Christopher M. Lahurd Pdf

Merriam Press Military Monograph 92. Second Edition (March 2012). On his twenty-sixth horrifying mission over the hostile skies of Nazi Europe a charismatic bombardier, seated at the nose of a B-17, strapped on his parachute as his disintegrating bomber dropped uncontrollably to the ground. What got him to this point, the ensuing months behind barbed wire, and his daily letters written to his family in Akron, Ohio provide the engrossing content of A Story of One. This is an emotionally intense memoir of a bombardier's experiences during World War II with the 817th Bomb Squadron, 483rd Bomb Group, Fifteenth Air Force. This book recreates a straightforward story of a cadet growing into a matured and experienced lieutenant that can be extrapolated to illustrate the immense impact of World War II on individual lives. Unlike the scores of historical studies of leaders, military decisions and battles and equally plentiful novels of the period, A Story of One offers a kind of "people's history." It is the true account of a single, unknown individual who stands in for the unsung warriors of the greatest generation by offering readers an insight into the details of one life. Although rich with military history, A Story of One is not entirely focused on the war. It recounts frugality and emotions on the home front, training, friendships, love affairs, family, confinement as a prisoner of war and much more. Between March 1942 and August 1945 a cadet becomes an aerial warrior, observes his comrades fall victim to the machinery of war, learns that his brother has also been captured, and attempts to ease his family's fears through frequent letters home. Besides thousands of wartime personal correspondence, A Story of One draws on extensive interviews with veterans of the 483rd Bombardment Group, conversation with military wives who lived through the war on the home front, and poignant conversations with the bombardier himself. Contents: Foreword; Introduction; Chapter 1: Memmingen Raid; Chapter 2: Bouncing Betty; Chapter 3: Airborne; Chapter 4: Square One; Chapter 5: Eye on Norden; Chapter 6: Brothers in Arms; Chapter 7: Roses and Rivets; Chapter 8: Groom Deploys; Chapter 9: Over the Deep Blue Pond; Chapter 10: Last Repose; Chapter 11: Nazi Interview; Chapter 12: The Dash; Chapter 13: Stalag Luft I; Chapter 14: Lost Boys; Chapter 15: Monotony; Chapter 16: Lucky; Chapter 17: Bombardier's Promise; Chapter 18: Victory Garden; Chapter 19: One Life; Bibliography; 25 photos. Review by James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers, Flyboys, The Imperial Cruise: After Daniel LaHurd passed away, Christopher LaHurd found his grandfather's memory box. A Story of One is Chris's loving recreation of Daniel's experiences as a World War II airman and POW. A great read.

The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw Pdf

The instant classic that changed the way we saw World War II and an entire generation of Americans, from the beloved journalist whose own iconic career has lasted more than fifty years. In this magnificent testament to a nation and her people, Tom Brokaw brings to life the extraordinary stories of a generation that gave new meaning to courage, sacrifice, and honor. From military heroes to community leaders to ordinary citizens, he profiles men and women who served their country with valor, then came home and transformed it: Senator Daniel Inouye, decorated at the front, fighting prejudice at home; Martha Settle Putney, one of the first black women to serve in the newly formed WACs; Charles Van Gorder, a doctor who set up a MASH-like medical facility in the middle of battle, then opened a small clinic in his hometown; Navy pilot and future president George H. W. Bush, assigned to read the mail of the enlisted men under him, who says that in doing so he “learned about life”; and many other laudable Americans. To this generation that gave so much and asked so little, Brokaw offers eloquent tribute in true stories of everyday heroes in extraordinary times. Praise for The Greatest Generation “Moving . . . a tribute to the members of the World War II generation to whom we Americans and the world owe so much.”—The New York Times Book Review “Full of wonderful, wrenching tales of a generation of heroes. Tom Brokaw reminds us what we are capable of as a people. An inspiring read for those who wish their spirits lifted.”—Colin L. Powell “Offers welcome inspiration . . . It is impossible to read even a few of these accounts and not be touched by the book’s overarching message: We who followed this generation have lived in the midst of greatness.”—The Washington Times “Entirely compelling.”—The Wall Street Journal

Leveraging Multigenerational Workforce Strategies in Higher Education by Edna Chun,Alvin Evans Pdf

The higher education literature on workplace diversity has overlooked the development of multigenerational workforce strategies as a key component of an inclusive talent proposition. While race, gender, sexual orientation, disability and other demographic attributes have gained considerable attention in diversity strategic planning, scant research pertains to building inclusive, multigenerational approaches within the culture and practices of higher education. Now more than ever, there is an urgent and unmet need to identify actionable strategies and approaches that optimize the contributions of multigenerational talent across the faculty, administrator, and staff ranks. With the goal of enhancing workforce capacity and creating more inclusive workplaces, Leveraging Multigenerational Workforce Strategies in Higher Education offers an in-depth look at multigenerational strategies that enhance institutional capacity and respond to educational needs. This book is the first to address the creation of multigenerational strategies in the higher education workplace based upon substantial empirical studies and qualitative research. Drawing on in-depth interviews with faculty and administrators, the book examines the broad "framing" of generations that consists of stereotypes, narratives, images, and emotions. Through the lens of these narratives, it describes how ageist framing is magnified by other minoritized statuses including race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation, and can result in structural inequality, process-based discrimination, and asymmetrical behavioral interactions in the higher education workplace. A major feature of the book is its focus on best-in-class HR and diversity policies and strategies that institutional leaders can deploy to overcome generational and ageist barriers and build an inclusive culture that values the contributions of all members. Due to its practical and concrete emphasis in sharing leading-edge policies and practices that comprise a holistic multigenerational workforce strategy, the book will serve as a concrete resource to boards of trustees, presidents, provosts, deans, diversity officers, department chairs, faculty, academic and non-academic administrators, diversity and human resource leaders, and diversity taskforces in their efforts to create strategic, evidence-based multigenerational workforce approaches. In addition, the book will be utilized in upper division and graduate courses in higher education administration, diversity, human resource management, educational leadership, intergenerational issues, gerontology, social work, and organizational psychology.
