A Plain Account of Christian Perfection by John Wesley Pdf

A Plain Account of Christian Perfection by John Wesley is about the theory of perfection according to Christian theology. Excerpt: "1. WHAT I purpose in the following pages is, to give a plain and distinct account of the steps by which I was led, during the course of many years, to embrace the doctrine of Christian Perfection. This I owe to the serious part of mankind; those who desire to know all the truth as it is in Jesus. And these only are concerned with questions of this kind. To these I would nakedly declare the thing as it is, endeavoring all along to show, from one period to another, both what I thought, and why I thought so."

Not illustrated. 1844 edition. Excerpt: ... In the room of this, Christ hath established another, namely, the law of faith. Not every one that doeth, but every one that believeth, now reeeiveth righteousness in the full sense of the word, that is, he is justified, sanctified, and glorified. Q. 2. Are we then " dead to the law?" A. We "are dead to the law by the body of Christ" given for us; Rom. vii, 4, to the Adamic as well as the Mosaic law. We are wholly freed therefrom by his death" that law expiring with him. Q. 3. How then are we "not without law to God, but under the law to Christ?" 1 Cor. ix, 21. A. We are without that law. But it does not follow that we are without any law. For God has established another law in its place, even the law of faith. And we are all under this law to God and to Christ. Both our Creator and our Redeemer require us to observe it. Q. 4. Is love the fulfilling of this law? A. Unquestionably it is. The whole law under which we now are is fulfilled by love, Rom. xiii, 9, 10. Faith working or animated by love is all that God now requires of man. He has substituted (not sincerity but) love in the room of angelic perfection. Q. 5. How is "love the end of the commandment?" I Tim. i, 5. A. It is the end of every commandment of God. It is the point aimed at by the whole and every part of the Christian institution. The foundation is faith, purifying the heart; the end love, preserving a good conscience. Q. 6. What love is this 1 . A. The loving the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, sotd, and strength; and the loving our neighbour, every man as ourselves, as our own souls. Q. 7. What are the fruits or properties of this love 1 A. St. Paul informs us at large, Love is long suffering. It suffers all the weaknesses of the children of God, all the...

John Wesley by John Wesley Pdf

In this book John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, discusses the Christian doctrine in a manner that is accessible, with characteristic wisdom and clarity. The doctrine of perfect love, as it translates into the life and being of the believer, is the principle topic at hand. Christian Perfection is the name which Wesley gives to the achievement of greater closeness with God and his teachings; this gradual advancement of belief, itself entailing the deepening of one's relationship with the divine, is something which both fascinated and enveloped Wesley. This book has some autobiographical overtones, since Wesley advances through the years of his life and identifies major turning points or landmarks on his own spiritual journey. By stages, he embraced the doctrine of advancing his faith, to the point where he felt obliged to offer his journey as an example to other Christians also seeking greater spiritual growth. A Plain Account of Christian Perfection is a fine foundation to the study of the Christian theology and the Bible. Wesley is careful to quote scripture to support certain views - such as those involving the love of oneself, others and the Lord - and in keeping with his style intersperses his own poetry with the explanations. A distinguished author, preacher and cleric in 18th century England, John Wesley created a deep and abiding body of work which remains emblematic of Christian thought of his era. He is most remembered today for his role in founding Methodism, and his scholarship which continues to hold an influential place in theological study.

The Doctrine of Spiritual Perfection by Anselm Stolz Pdf

First published in 1938, this book made a significant contribution to the scholarship on mysticism by approaching the problems of mysticism from the theological angle adopted by the church fathers and medieval scholastics. Seeking to strike a balance with the psychological method, Stolz began his study with an examination not of John of the Cross or Teresa de Avila, but of St. Paul's account of his rapture. Stolz's analysis clarified the theological foundation of mysticism and its development in the ecclesiastical tradition, with his assertion that "mysticism is built on the sacramental and therefore the liturgical life, and is thus bound up intrinsically with Christian life, of which it is the conscious intensification and perfection."

Guide to Christian Perfection by Charles Fitch Pdf

"...I shall give you such views of truth, and only such as I feel most willing to meet in the great and dreadful day of account.""I shall also give them, as far as possible, in Scripture language, that it may be seen on what I rest my faith, and whether I do, or do not, pervert the word of God...""The all absorbing question with me, so far as my own eternal interests are concerned, is this: How shall I become obedient to that high command of the Most High God, 'Be ye holy for I am holy.' (I Peter 1:16, Lev. 11:44).""Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: (Hebrews 12:14).""The end is near! We have not a moment to lose! Light is to shine forth from God's people in clear, distinct rays, bringing Jesus before the churches and before the world. Our work is not to be restricted to those who already know the truth; our field is the world. The instrumentalities to be used are those souls who gladly receive the light of truth which God communicates to them. These are God's agencies for communicating the knowledge of truth to the world. If through the grace of Christ His people will become new bottles, He will fill them with new wine. God will give additional light, and old truths will be recovered, and replaced in the framework of truth; and wherever the laborers go, they will triumph. As Christ's ambassadors, they are to search the Scriptures, to see for the truths that have been hidden beneath the rubbish of error. And every ray of light received is to be communicated to others. One interest will prevail, one subject will swallow up every other - Christ Our Righteousness." - Review & Herald, Dec. 23, 1890
