Excerpt from Atlas to Alison's History of Europe Parallels, in the attack of a place, are wide trenches affording the besieging troops a free covered communication between their various batteries and approaches. The first parallel is the first work of an attack which is laid down. Theoretically it is placed 600 yards from the covered way. Parapet. The screen which in a fortified post covers the troops and guns from the enemy's observation and fire usually a bank of earth. Report Upon the Practice in Europe With the Heavy Armstrong, Woolwich, and Krupp Rifled Guns (Classic Reprint) by United States Board of Fortifications Pdf

Excerpt from Report Upon the Practice in Europe With the Heavy Armstrong, Woolwich, and Krupp Rifled Guns Sir: The Board of Engineers has submitted a report presenting records collected from time to time of practice abroad with the heavy Armstrong, Woolwich, and Krupp rifled guns. The results are tabulated for easy reference, and exhibit a large range in powder charges, initial velocities, and striking energies of the projectile from the earlier to the latest trials. The paper contains valuable information for the officers of the Corps of Engineers and for the Army generally, and I respectfully recommend that authority be granted to have it printed, with its accompanying plates, at the Government Printing. Office, as a Professional Paper of the Corps of Engineers, and that copies be obtained for the use of the Engineer Department upon the usual requisition. In view of the permanency of its value, and to save expense of composition, in case that future editions are called for, I further recommend that the work be stereo typed. The report, with accompanying tables and plates, is submitted herewith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Firearms in American History by Charles Winthrop Sawyer Pdf

Excerpt from Firearms in American History: 1600 to 1800 The Colonists in America were the greatest weapon-using people of that epoch in the world. Everywhere the gun was more abundant than the tool. It furnished daily food; it maintained its owners claims to the possession of his homestead among the aboriginal owners of the soil; it helped to win the mother country's wars for possession of the country as a whole. These facts alone raise the interesting questions of what the Colonists used for weapons and where they got them. Further, the ultimate outcome of all strife between the Colonists and other people was victory for the Colonists. While the Colonists may have been excellent fighters, operating in the main upon home ground, and while their wars with other white people were side issues of European wars and to a considerable extent dependent upon the outcome there, it is nevertheless a fact that a war is composed of two factors, only one of which is the combatants themselves. Ninety Days Worth of Europe (Classic Reprint) by Edward Everett Hale Pdf

Excerpt from Ninety Days Worth of Europe There has been no period till now when we have had a smooth enough sea for me to write even thus ill. But really our detail has been little. It is just possible that a schooner may have announced that she spoke as Wednesday night. If she arrives at Boston, it will not be that she has not been sent to a hotter place by everybody who has alluded to her in our party (excepting me, who sympathize with her skip per, and am afraid I should have done just what he did). The skipper thought he was going to be run down, and fired two guns. This he should never have done, unless he were in distress; but, as he did it, gallant Capt. Leitch in all that stiff gale lay by, and sent a boat on board him, only to learn that his distress rose from his fears that he did not see him. So, as far as I can learn, he got quite distinctly con demned for his pains; and we proceeded again to our business of getting to Europe. By rigid con tinuance in it, we were able to take a pilot this morn ing: a very pretty and exciting sight, two pilot schooners vying for our custom, and the successful Bluenose having to pull a mile in his fine little dory over such waves as you never saw. By the time he reached us, his nose was as red as a peach blow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Story of the Guns In addition to personal observation of the results of experiments with artillery, my information has been drawn from such records as are accessible to the public papers laid before Parliament, evidence taken by suc cessive Committees of the House of Commons, dis eussions in the theatres of scientific institutions, addresses delivered to large assemblies on special occa sions, reviews and periodicals, reports of the press upon the marvellous powers of the new ordnance as displayed from time to time at various points of the coast, and the comments of writers devoted exclusively to me chamical science in its application to the art of war. The Guns of Europe by Joseph a Altsheler Pdf

Book Excerpt: head. He always stood impressed, and perhaps a little awed before centuries of culture, and he failed to understand how any one could challenge the accepted past. John's Philistine spirit, which he deemed all the more irregular in one so young pained him at times. Yet it was more assumed than real with young Scott. They reached their hotel and passed into the dining-room, where both did full justice to the good German food. John did not fail to make his usual inspection of guests, but he started a little, when he saw the Prussian officer of the gallery, alone at a table by a window overlooking the Elbe. It was one of the pleasantest views in Europe, but John knew very well that the man was thinking little of it. His jaw had not lost is pugnacious thrust, and he snapped his orders to the waiter as if he were rebuking a recruit.Nobody had told John that he was a Prussian, but the young American knew it nevertheless, and he knew him to be a product, out of the very heart of that iron military systRead More
