The Hebrew Christian Witness and Prophetic Investigator by Moses Margoliouth Pdf

Excerpt from The Hebrew Christian Witness and Prophetic Investigator: An Anglo-Judaeo Christian Magazine; Volume for 1874 That our readers may not suppose that our description of Professor Max Miiller's discourse is unwarrantable, we proceed to furnish an analysis of it as it was published in the principal London papers. The Professor sets forth by classifying or cataloguing the religions of the world, and finds, according to his way of counting, that the number of reli gions only amounts to eight. The Semitic races have produced three the Jewish, the Christian, the Mohammedan. We would respectft intimate to the lecturer that he is at fault here in his theory of compa. Ruh've theology. The Semih'c race has produced one religion only, and that is Judaism. Christianity is Judaism fully developed and perfected. Some Jewish Witnesses for Christ (Annotated) by A. Bernstein,Rev A Bernstein B D Pdf

The history of the Mission to the Jews is coeval with the history of the Christian Church. The names of Christ's disciples mentioned in the Gospels are nearly all those of Jews, and in the Epistles a great many of them are of Jewish converts. But the general reader of the New Testament does not realize the fact, because it was the fashion among the Jews at that time to assume Greek names. For instance, several of St. Paul's relatives bearing Greek names became Christians, but we should not know that they were Jews if the Apostle had not written, "Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen." Again, "Lucius, and Jason, and Sosipater, my kinsmen" (Rom. xvi. 7 and 21). Whilst where we have not this information with regard to other such names, we take it for granted that they were Gentiles. For instance, Zenas, mentioned in Titus iii. 13, is naturally taken by the general reader for a Greek, yet scholars maintain that he had formerly been a Jewish scribe or lawyer. The aim of this work is to shew that God had at all times in the history of the Christian Church a considerable number of believing Israelites who, after their conversion to Christianity, rendered good service to their fellowmen and to the Church of Christ at large. Out of this company of "the remnant according to the election of grace," only a very few comparatively have their names recorded in history. The names of the great majority are written in the Book of Life alone. But as in the prophet Ezekiel-Noah, Job and Daniel-and as in the Epistle to the Hebrews-the short list of the Old Testament saints-are the representatives of a large number, so may the converts mentioned in this book be considered as representatives of a vast number of their brethren who had the courage and the grace given them to take up the cross and follow Jesus.

Reluctant Witnesses by Stephen R. Haynes Pdf

Stephen Haynes takes a hard look at contemporary Christian theology as he explores the pervasive Christian "witness-people" myth that dominates much Christian thinking about the Jews in both Christian and Jewish minds. This myth, an ancient theological construct that has put Jews in the role of living symbols of God's dealings with the world, has for centuries, according to Haynes, created an ambivalence toward the Jews in the Christian mind with often disastrous results. Tracing the witness-people myth from its origins to its manifestations in the modern world, Haynes finds the myth expressed in many unexpected places: the writings of Karl Barth, the novels and essays of Walker Percy, the "prophetic" writings of Hal Lindsey, as well as in the work of some North American Holocaust theologians such as Alice L. and A. Roy Eckardt, Paul van Buren, and Franklin Littell.

The Gospel and Israel by Paul F. Morris Pdf

The mission of the church to the Jews is a unique one. The biblical, theological and practical issues differ from those with other groups because Israel was, and is, the people to whom God gave his promises. However, the unbelief of many Jewish people and the persecution of Jewish people in the name of Jesus makes mission to the Jews uniquely difficult, requiring considerable sensitivity. But it is also full of hope, for there is promise of both a remnant and a fullness coming to faith in Jesus the Messiah. The lectures in this book were part of a series organized by Christian Witness to Israel in Australia to explore this unique challenge and to encourage an intelligent, heartfelt, and persevering interest in mission to the Jewish people. The studies focus on Biblical, theological, historical, and current issues. They were named the Edersheim Lectures after Alfred Edersheim, the well-known nineteenth-century Jewish Christian scholar and author who served in Romania as a missionary and in the United Kingdom as a pastor. Following in his example, The Gospel and Israel engages in an in-depth examination of themes relating to the Jewish people and the Christian faith. Contributors to this volume include: Dr. Paul Barnett - Jews and Gentiles and the Gospel of Christ Dr. Ian Pennicook - The Place of Israel in Systematic Theology Dr. Stephen Voorwinde - How Jewish Is Israel in the New Testament? Dr. Mark D. Thompson - Luther and the Jews Dr. Peter Barnes - Calvin and the Jews Dr. Rowland S. Ward - Christian Mission to the Jews: 1550-1850 Martin Pakula - The Israel/Palestine Conflict Dr. David Starling - The Yes to All God's Promises: Jesus, Israel and the Promises of God in Paul's Letters Mike Moore - Pentecost and the Plan of God
