Connecticut's Black Soldiers, 1775-1783 by David O. White Pdf

Black soldiers of the American Revolution? Not a credible statement in light of what most Americans have read about the Revolutionary War. We have heard of Casimir Pulaski the Pole, Marquis de Lafayette the Frenchman, and Baron von Steuben the German, but not black participants. Yet, close to 5,000 blacks did fight in the war against the British, and others served as laborers, spies, and guides. The absence in our general histories of their activities in this struggle lies with the misconception that the Afro-American has contributed little or nothing towards the creation of the United States and its subsequent development, for in most studies made of the Revolutionary era, there has been little impulse to search for evidences of service by blacks, except perhaps to note the existence of slavery. Histories of Connecticut have generally treated the Revolution in a similar manner. Few of them have acknowledged the contributions of the black soldier. This is partially true because the story of Connecticut's black participant is one about the regular foot soldier in the Revolution and not about the men who led him into battle or the political leaders who guided the nation. And it is these men who most often fill the pages of our history books. As one phase of the Bicentennial observation, The American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Connecticut has authorized scholars in a wide range of study to write a series of monographs on the broadly defined Revolutionary Era of 1763 to 1787. These monographs [appeared] yearly beginning in 1973 through 1980. Emphasis is placed upon the birth of the nation, rather than on the winning of independence on the field of battle.

African American Connecticut Explored by Elizabeth J. Normen Pdf

Winner of the Connecticut League of Historic Organization Award of Merit (2015) The numerous essays by many of the state’s leading historians in African American Connecticut Explored document an array of subjects beginning from the earliest years of the state’s colonization around 1630 and continuing well into the 20th century. The voice of Connecticut’s African Americans rings clear through topics such as the Black Governors of Connecticut, nationally prominent black abolitionists like the reverends Amos Beman and James Pennington, the African American community’s response to the Amistad trial, the letters of Joseph O. Cross of the 29th Regiment of Colored Volunteers in the Civil War, and the Civil Rights work of baseball great Jackie Robinson (a twenty-year resident of Stamford), to name a few. Insightful introductions to each section explore broader issues faced by the state’s African American residents as they struggled for full rights as citizens. This book represents the collaborative effort of Connecticut Explored and the Amistad Center for Art & Culture, with support from the State Historic Preservation Office and Connecticut’s Freedom Trail. It will be a valuable guide for anyone interested in this fascinating area of Connecticut’s history. Contributors include Billie M. Local Law in Massachusetts and Connecticut by William Chauncey Fowler Pdf

Excerpt from Local Law in Massachusetts and Connecticut: Historically Considered; And the Historical Status of the Negro, in Connecticut; Also, a Speech Delivered in the Senate of Connecticut, June 22, 1864 The annals of Massachusetts and of Connecticut show that each of these commonwealths have been ever ready to maintain the right of local self-government. The rights granted in char ters by the British Crown, in one era, and the rights reserved to the states in the Federal Constitution, in another era, were dearly prized by each commonwealth, as the basis of its local laws. This love of local law, and the struggles to maintain it, are, in the following pages, set forth in a series of historical facts, in the hope that they would furnish lessons of wisdom for poli tical students of this and future times. A like induction of facts from the annals of other states, of the Old Thirteen, would show that they too were animated by the same spirit to struggle for the same object. The African-American Experience in Nineteenth-Century Connecticut by Theresa Vara-Dannen Pdf

The African-American Experience in Nineteenth-Century Connecticut examines and analyzes the African-American experience in Connecticut as it was through primary sources. Theresa Vara-Dannen analyzes the language of real nineteenth-century Americans expressing the complexity of their thoughts and feelings about the racial issues of their times in a small state with very small communities of people of color. This book highlights the attitudes of ordinary people whose voices emerged, sometimes heroically, through their daily newspapers. The meshing of these voices regarding their race-related experiences provides a nuanced account of a long-gone past, but also gives us an understanding of twenty-first-century Connecticut, which leads the nation in the educational and economic gap between urban and nonurban citizens and has one of the most segregated school systems and residential patterns in the nation.

Connecticut in the American Civil War by Matthew Warshauer Pdf

“Serves as a model of what a state-level survey of the Civil War can achieve . . . a potent combination of description and analysis.” —The Civil War Monitor Connecticut in the American Civil War offers a remarkable window into the state’s involvement in a conflict that challenged and defined the unity of a nation. The arc of the war is traced through the many facets and stories of battlefield, home front, and factory. Matthew Warshauer masterfully reveals the varied attitudes toward slavery and race before, during, and after the war; Connecticut’s reaction to the firing on Fort Sumter; the dissent in the state over whether or not the sword and musket should be raised against the South; the raising of troops; the sacrifice of those who served on the front and at home; and the need for closure after the war. This book is a concise, amazing account of a complex and troubling war. No one interested in this period of American history can afford to miss reading this important contribution to our national and local stories.
