Understanding Japanese Woodblock-printed Illustrated Books by Jun Suzuki,Ellis Tinios Pdf

"Understanding Japanese Woodblock-Printed Illustrated Books offers a wider understanding and appreciation of the illustrated books produced in Japan between 1603 and 1912. It is a valuable tool for scholars of early modern Japanese art and literature and a broad range of other disciplines who wish to integrate the content of Japanese illustrated books into their teaching and research. As a handbook aimed at collectors, curators and librarians, it is also an essential resource to assist in evaluating, describing and conserving the books in their care. The background essays, a detailed glossary and case studies are equally of interest to students of the history and art of the book, publishing, printing and book illustration."--

Ukiyo-e by Frederick Harris Pdf

The art of Japanese woodblock printing, known as ukiyo-e ("pictures of the floating world"), reflects the rich history and way of life in Japan hundreds of years ago. Ukiyo-e: The Art of the Japanese Print takes a thematic approach to this iconic Japanese art form, considering prints by subject matter: geisha and courtesans, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, erotica, nature, historical subjects and even images of foreigners in Japan. An artist himself, author Frederick Harris—a well-known American collector who lived in Japan for 50 years—pays special attention to the methods and materials employed in Japanese printmaking. The book traces the evolution of ukiyo-e from its origins in metropolitan Edo (Tokyo) art culture as black and white illustrations, to delicate two-color prints and multicolored designs. Advice to admirers on how to collect, care for, view and buy Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints rounds out this book of charming, carefully selected prints.

A History of Japanese Colour-Prints by W. Von Seidlitz Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Japanese Colour-Prints: With Illustrations in Colour and Black and White The first comprehensive survey of Japanese wood-engraving, Anderson's monograph in the Porgfo/z'o, appeared in 1895. The first attempt to write a history of this art was Strange's totally inadequate Japanese Illustration of 1897. Unfortunately, Strange had published before he was able to take advantage of the new light thrown upon his subject by Fenollosa, in his illuminating Catalogue of 1896, Tim Master: of Ukiyoye. The only remaining sources of information for the student were a number of scattered articles, monographs, exhibition catalogues, and sale catalogues, and it seemed to me that I might do a useful work by gathering together all this disjointed learning into a coherent whole. Japanese art has become an element in our European culture it supplies certain needs of our age, and makes distinctly for its progress. But in order to appreciate Japanese wood-engraving to the full, we must know the inter relation between the various artists, and the successive stages of development in their art; we also require a criterion by which to test individual essays, that we may not rest content with weak and imitative work when the best is within reach. A survey of Japanese wood-engraving which would serve these ends was the task I accordingly set before me. Japanese Woodblock Printing by Rebecca Salter Pdf

Of all the sophisticated traditional arts and crafts of Japan, woodblock prints are probably the most widely known in the West. The bold yet refined compositions are as fresh to the Western eye today as they were when they first came to the attention of the Impressionists in the nineteenth century. With their fluid lines, intricate carving and delicate colors, Japanese prints are still as fascinating as ever. In this book, Rebecca Salter takes us through the history of the Japanese woodblock, discusses the materials, tools, and papers available (and their Western equivalents) and shows how to get the most out of them through interesting step-by-step projects. The work of an international group of artists shows the varied and exciting prints being produced today.

The Japanese Print by Hugo Munsterberg Pdf

This straightforwardly written and highly informative book is designed as an introductory history and guide to Japanese prints for the student and the beginning collector. Not limited to "ukiyo-e", it also discusses medieval Buddhist prints and the prints of the modern era, from the Mieiji period to the present. Thus such modern luminaries as Onchi, Hiratsuka, and Munakata are presented alongside the Edo master printmakers Harunobu, Kiyonaga, Utamaro, Sharaku, Hokusai, and Hiroshige. A major virtue of the book is the attention it gives to the aesthetics of the prints and to the lives of the printmakers themselves. Illustrated with 14 prints in full color and 86 in black and white, it also offers a thoroughly useful chapter on the collection and care of Japanse prints, a glossary, and a valuable selected bibliography. -- From publisher's description.

Japanese Woodblock Prints by Andreas Marks Pdf

Japanese woodblock prints, or ukiyo-e, are the most recognizable Japanese art form. Their massive popularity has spread from Japan to be embraced by a worldwide audience. Covering the period from the beginning of the Japanese woodblock print in the 1680s until the year 1900, Japanese Woodblock Prints provides a detailed survey of all the famous ukiyo-e artists, along with over 500 full-color prints. Unlike previous examinations of this art form, Japanese Woodblock Prints includes detailed histories of the publishers of woodblock prints—who were often the driving force determining which prints, and therefore which artists, would make it into mass circulation for a chance at critical and popular success. Invaluable as a guide for ukiyo-e enthusiasts looking for detailed information about their favorite Japanese woodblock print artists and prints, it is also an ideal introduction for newcomers to the world of the woodblock print. This lavishly illustrated book will be a valued addition to the libraries of scholars, as well as the general art enthusiast.
