The History of Norway (Classic Reprint) by David Noyes Pdf

Excerpt from The History of Norway The several religious societies will accept my thanks for their aid generously furnished me, and with my warm thanks, a warmer wish, that our Heavenly Father may always con tinue to smile propitiously on them, and fit them, more than ever, for the full enjoyment of a blessed immortality. To the officers of the Militia (i can 't find any new, but I have found the old books) I present my thanks for the old records and all the officers of the Militia are entitled to much praise for the correctness with which the books have been kept. To be sure, we all desire to see the time when men shall learn war no more, but perhaps it may be well to keep the tools ready for fear they may be wanted. Excerpt from The Story of Norway It is a pleasant duty to acknowledge my indebted ness for valuable criticism to my friends, E. Munroe Adjunct Professor Of History in Columbia College, and Hon. Rasmus B. Andersen, United States Minister to Denmark, without whose kindly aid in procuring books, maps, etc., the diffi culties in the preparation of the present volume would have been much increased. I am also under Obligation to Dr. W. H. Carpenter, Of Columbia College, and to the Norwegian artist, Mr. H. N. Gausta, Of La Crosse, Wis., who has kindly sent me two spirited original compositions, illustrative of peasant-life in Norway. Norway and the Norwegians (Classic Reprint) by Charles Francis Keary Pdf

Excerpt from Norway and the Norwegians The growing attractiveness of Norse scenery to English and American travellers, whereof the returns of steam ship companies and hotels would be sufficient evidence, has been witnessed also by the production during recent years of a good many books descriptive of the country. The present volume is not an addition to the number of these. It does not, that is to say, aim chiefly at describing what the tourist may expect to see in Nor way; but rather at supplying those items of informa tion which the most sharp-sighted traveller could not get from observation alone; some of those links which unite the Norway of to-day to the Norway of the past, and the parts of the existing life of the country visible to the eye to other parts which the mere tourist cannot participate in, the life of politics, of industry, of literature, which belongs to the inhabitants of a country but not to the visitors to. It. A final chapter, kindly written for me by Miss E. Tindall, deals upon the same plan'with the Flora of Norway. History of the Norwegian People, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by Knut Gjerset Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Norwegian People, Vol. 1 The growing interest in Norwegian language, literature, and culture in this country has created a special need for a history of the Norwegian people in the English language devoting sufficient attention to the more important phases of the people's life to show the development of their institutions and culture, their life at home, and their activity and influence abroad. It has been my aim in this work to meet this demand by having constantly in mind what questions an intelligent reader might be expected to ask, and by trying, as far as possible, to answer them. In the Middle Ages the Scandinavian peoples were potent factors in developing navigation, commerce, municipal life and government, literature and culture in northern Europe. But nothing has been taken for granted, nor has any theory been advanced beyond what is clearly established by the investigations of the best schol ars. The way to the original sources has, therefore, always been pointed out, and these have been used in a conservative spirit. The views of the leading scholars have been followed, and some times preference has been purposely given to the more conservative views on points where there is or might be a difference of opinion. On the whole I have deemed it advisable to adhere to Snorre Sturlason's healthful principle: It seems better to us that some thing should be added later than that anything should have to be stricken out. The period of the union with Denmark has been treated with some fullness of detail. The preservation of the people's per sonal freedom amidst general national decay, the germs of a new development distinctly traceable in social life has been especially dwelt upon, not only because these features are characteristic of the life of the Norwegian people in that period, but because they constitute the basis of their political and social development in modern times. Regarding Norway's long struggle for complete independence after 1814 an attempt has been made to state facts fearlessly and impartially, without any spirit of antagonism against the noble and heroic Swedish people, who are and will be Norway's truest friends. When I Was a Boy in Norway (Classic Reprint) by John Oscar Hall Pdf

Excerpt from When I Was a Boy in Norway Customs in Norway vary much in the different sections and valleys. What is customary in one valley may be strange or even unknown in another. This will be easily understood when we remember that the people in the solitary parishes have had little intercommunion and that each parish has clung to its own traditions and customs. With this in view, I have had the choice of either presenting that which is true of a small section or parish, or that which is more generally true for the whole country. Excerpt from History of the Scottish Expedition to Norway in 1612 It is with the same practical object that, with the generous co-operation of the publishers, the lecture has been embodied in the little book now commended to the attention of those who take an interest in Scot tish history, as well as to that of the British and American travellers who visit in such largely increas ing numbers the beautiful and hospitable valleys and highlands of Norway, in which they find so much sympathetic evidence of a common origin of both race and language. History of the Church and State in Norway by Thomas B. Willson Pdf

Excerpt from History of the Church and State in Norway: From the Tenth to the Sixteenth Century History of the Church and State in Norway, as I think it will be found that in Norway, Church and State were more closely connected than in any other country in Europe. As the work is indeed primarily a history of Norway from its ecclesiastical side, I have therefore not followed more closely than it seemed necessary, the various purely civil events and the warlike expeditions to other lands in the early days.
