The History of the Speculative Society, 1764-1904 (Classic Reprint) by Speculative Society of Edinburgh Pdf

Excerpt from The History of the Speculative Society, 1764-1904 IT is sixty years since a History of the Speculative Society was published, and it has for a long time been felt that it would be of interest, not only to members, but to many who are not members, if that History were brought down to date. In 1864 the Society celebrated its centenary, and six years later a committee was appointed to consider the matter. In 1871 that committee reported that no new publication should then be undertaken, but that arrange ments might be made to collect information to be used when the proper time should come. The practical out come of this suggestion was the institution of the elaborate system of roll-books, minute-books, and report-books which is now in use, and which preserves a permanent record of all information of general interest concerning each 'member of the Society. For this system of records, which has furnished valuable material in compiling the present volume, the Society is mainly indebted to the secretary of that date, Mr. Charles J. Guthrie. The Scottish Enlightenment and Early Victorian English Society by Anand C. Chitnis Pdf

Originally published in 1986, this book creates a vivid portrait of the interaction of Scottish ideas and early Victorian English society over 50 years, illuminated by detail and substantial in its range. The book delineates certain ideas of the so-called Scottish Enlightenment and the education that purveyed them. It considers those who taught and received that learning and how it was taken to England. There, through the mediation of politicians, lawyers, economists, doctors and others, the intellectual life of later 18th Century Scotland had a profound impact on many areas of historical development in early 19th Century England. The book concentrates on the influence of Scottish social thought and medical practice, high Whig politics and political economy, as well as the professional experience and socio-cultural significance of Scottish-trained physicians.

Political Rhetoric in the Oxford and Cambridge Unions, 1830–1870 by Taru Haapala Pdf

This book offers much-needed insight into the Oxford and Cambridge Unions and the important role they have played in nineteenth-century British political culture. Despite this role, or perhaps for that very reason, the Unions have received very little scholarly attention as to their political activities. This study will focus particularly on debating practices through which their members became knowledgeable of the parliamentary way of doing politics. More significantly, it uses the original Union records as primary research material to show that they also had unique political practices of their own. Presenting a detailed analysis of their debates, the book argues that the Unions should be appreciated as independent political arenas, not mere extensions of Westminster politics.
