Excerpt from The History of the High School of Edinburgh Of the High School of Edinburgh, this work comprises an historical account, founded on information derived from a careful examination of the Records of the Town-Council, and other authentic Documents. This Seminary, which existed in the beginning of the sixteenth century, was patronised by King James the Sixth, in whose reign it was styled Schola Regia Edinensis; and George the Fourth recognised its national importance by the bestowal of a handsome donation. As the work embraces much that is new respecting the lives, peculiar modes of tuition, and literary labours of the most eminent teachers, as well as brief notices of persons of distinction and rank educated at the High School, it is hoped that it will prove useful to all engaged in the honourable and arduous task of instructing youth, and interesting to a large portion of the public. The changes which have occurred in the Course of Study from the earliest period are embodied in the narrative. But in order to give information more decidedly of a practical character, a detailed account of the system of education at present pursued in the junior classes, prepared by Mr Gunn, one of the Masters, and a similar account of the highest class, furnished by Dr Schmitz, the Rector, occupy a distinct place. The book seeks to generate a renewed interest in Blair by provoking new inquiries into the tradition of belletristic rhetoric and by serving as both aid and incentive to others who may join in the project of improving understanding of this landmark rhetorical scholarship. This edition contains forty-seven lectures and remains faithful to the text of the 1785 London edition. The editors contextualize Hugh Blair’s motivations and thinking by providing in their introduction an extended account of Blair’s life and era. The bibliography of works by and about Blair is an invaluable aid, surpassing previous research on Blair. Although the extent of its influence cannot be measured fully, Blair’s Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres was undoubtedly a primary vehicle for introducing many eighteenth- and nineteenth-century scholars to classical rhetoric and French belletristic rhetoric—its success due in part to the ease with which the lectures combine neoclassical and Enlightenment thought, accommodating emerging social concerns. Ferreira-Buckley and Halloran’s extensive treatment revives the tradition of belletristic rhetoric, improving the understanding of Blair’s place in the study of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century discourse, while finding him relevant in the twenty-first century.

A beautifully illustrated argument that reveals notebooks as extraordinary paper machines that transformed knowledge on the page and in the mind. Information is often characterized as facts that float effortlessly across time and space. But before the nineteenth century, information was seen as a process that included a set of skills enacted through media on a daily basis. How, why, and where were these mediated facts and skills learned? Concentrating on manuscripts created by students in Scotland between 1700 and 1830, Matthew Daniel Eddy argues that notebooks functioned as workshops where notekeepers learned to judge the accuracy, utility, and morality of the data they encountered. He shows that, in an age preoccupied with "enlightened" values, the skills and materials required to make and use notebooks were not simply aids to reason—they were part of reason itself. Covering a rich selection of material and visual media ranging from hand-stitched bindings to watercolor paintings, the book problematizes John Locke's comparison of the mind to a blank piece of paper, the tabula rasa. Although one of the most recognizable metaphors of the British Enlightenment, scholars seldom consider why it was so successful for those who used it. Eddy makes a case for using the material culture of early modern manuscripts to expand the meaning of the metaphor in a way that offers a clearer understanding of the direct relationship that existed between thinking and notekeeping. Starting in the home, moving to schools, and then ending with universities, the book explores this argument by reconstructing the relationship between media and the mind from the bottom up.
