The History of the Postmarks of the British Isles From 1840 to 1876 by John G. Hendy Pdf

Excerpt from The History of the Postmarks of the British Isles From 1840 to 1876: Compiled Chiefly From Official Records It is regretted that, in describing the many changes in connection with the London Penny Post, the Act of Parliament 4 George II. C. 33 was inadvertently overlooked. This omission makes it necessary for me to supplement my former remarks on page 55 by the following explanation. The Act of Anne merely provided that letters by the Penny Post should be charged a penny, and was silent on the subject of the second or delivery penny. The Act 4 George II. C. 33, of 1731, made the delivery penny legal. The Act of 1794 made prepayment optional, and imposed a postage of 2d. In' either direction on letters to or from parts beyond the cities of London and Westminster, the Borough of Southwark, and their suburbs; but letters from one part of the cities of London and Westminster and Borough of Southwark to another part of the town were, until the year 1801, only charged one penny. Another matter that has been brought to my notice in connection with the London Penny Post is the use of three marks not shown in the earlier volume. These postmarks, Fig. 3. Fig. 5. Figs. 3, 4, and 5. London Penny Po t Varieties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Penning Poison by Emily Cockayne Pdf

Accusatory, libellous, or just bizarre, Penning Poison unveils the history of anonymous letter-writing. 'er at number 14 is dirty Receiving an unexpected and unsigned note is a disconcerting experience. In Penning Poison, Emily Cockayne traces the stories of such letters to all corners of English society over the period 1760-1939. She uncovers scandal, deception, class enmity, personal tragedy, and great loneliness. Some messages were accusatory, some libellous, others bizarre. Technology, new postal networks, forensic techniques, and the emergence of professional police all influence the phenomenon of poison letter campaigns. This book puts the letters back into their local and psychology context, extending the work of detectives, to discover who may have written them and why. Emily Cockayne explores the reasons and motivations for the creation and delivery of these missives and the effect on recipients - with some blasé, others driven to madness. Small communities hit by letter campaigns became places of suspicion and paranoia. By examining the ways in which these letters spread anxiety in the past Penning Poison grapples with the question of how nasty messages can turn into an epidemic. The book recovers many lost stories about how we used to write to one another, finding that perhaps the anxieties of our internet age are not as new as we think.
