The Williamite Wars in Ireland by John Childs Pdf

The comprehensive defeat of the Jacobite Irish in the Williamite conflict, a component within the pan-European Nine Years' War, prevented the exiled James II from regaining his English throne, ended realistic prospects of a Stuart restoration and partially secured the new regime of King William III and Queen Mary created by the Glorious Revolution. The principal events - the Siege of Londonderry, the Battles of the Boyne and Aughrim, and the two Sieges and Treaty of Limerick - have subsequently become totems around which opposing constructions of Irish history have been erected. Childs argues that the struggle was typical of the late-seventeenth century, principally decided by economic resources and attrition in which the 'small war' comprising patrols, raids, occupation of captured regions by small garrisons, police actions against irregulars and attacks on supply lines was more significant in determining the outcome than the set-piece battles and sieges.

The Williamite Wars in Ireland, 1688-91 by John Childs Pdf

William III's defeat of James II's Catholic army at the Battle of the Boyne on 1 July 1690 ended the Stuart dynasty's last hope of survival. It has also been central, together with the siege of Londonderry, to opposing constitutions of Irish history. John Childs gives a clear account of the campaign in all its stages.

Jacobite Ireland, 1685-91 by John Gerald Simms Pdf

This detailed study first appeared in 1979. It traces the course of a critical period of Irish history: from the accession of James II to the surrender of Limerick, which made William of Orange master of the whole country. It takes the story from the Catholic revival that followed the accession of James II to the treaty of Limerick, which led to a century of Protestant ascendancy and penal laws. Much of the book is concerned with the war of the two kings, which coincided with a struggle for power between the Protestant settlers and the older inhabitants who were Catholic. The siege of Derry and the battle of the Boyne are still commemorated, and Dr Simms shows how the tensions of modern Ulster have their origins in the seventeenth century. Considerable attention is paid to the European implications of the conflict, which is shown as part of the contest between Louis XIV and the Grand Alliance. French, Danish and Dutch sources are used to illustrate the course of events in Ireland and, in addition to the military narrative, problems of religion, politics and landholding are discussed.

War and Politics in Ireland, 1649-173 by J. G. Simms Pdf

Nowhere is the mid-20th century 'historiographical revolution' in Irish history better represented than in the writings of J. G. Simms, one of the most prolific historians of this generation. In a stream of books and papers from the early 1950s to his death in 1979, Simms tackled some of the most vexed and vexing questions in all Irish history: the wars, confiscations, persecutions and politics of the later 17th century. Topics such as Cromwell's sieges, the 'Glorious Revolution' and its aftermath, the later passage of the infamous 'penal laws' against Catholics are all episodes close to the heart of modern myth-makers, and yet all are described by Simms with fairness and exemplary clarity. This is a collection of his key essays, all of which remain a valuable resource for scholars of war and politics in early modern Ireland.

Patrick Sarsfield and the Williamite War by Piers Wauchope Pdf

Patrick Sarsfield (1655?-1693), undoubtedly one of the most romantic figures of Irish history, has always captured the popular imagination. This biography describes Sarsfield's unpromising early career where he was dismissed from the army, involved in a series of duels, and took part in two violent abductions of wealthy young widows. His second miltary career began after he had been seriously injured while serving as a volunteer at the battle of Sedgemoor. He survived to become the outstanding Irish soldier in the Williamite War. This book provides a detailed account of that war in Ireland, with special focus on Sarsfield's attack on Sligo, his part in the battle of the Boyne and his celebrated raid on King William's artillery train outside Limerick. Sarsfield's prominent and outspoken part in the politics of the day is evaluated, as are his actions in the final stages of the war at Athlone, Aughrim, and Limerick. His agreement to terms with the Williamites led to the treaty of Limerick. Within two years he died a general in the French army, the most celebrated Irishman of his time.
