Tales From the Hollow by Scott Kennedy Pdf

This story begins some 13,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, before travelling thousands of years ahead to the early pioneers and the farms they established, and right up to the present day. Readers will learn how the local St. John’s Anglican Church welcomed its first worshippers when Beethoven was still performing in the concert halls of Europe. They will meet Cornelius van Nostrand, born in 1730—twenty-six years before Mozart and eleven years before the first performance of Handel’s Messiah—and now at rest in St. John’s churchyard. This rich history also includes such diverse figures as Amelia Earhart—who discovered her love of flying at an aerodrome overlooking Hogg’s Hollow—and Northern Dancer, the most influential Thoroughbred racehorse in history. Members of the British Royal Family—including two Kings of England—were also regular visitors to the area, staying in later years with E.P. Taylor and his wife Winifred at the Taylors’ Windfields Farm, where Northern Dancer was also a resident.

The March of Spare Time by Susan Currell Pdf

In The March of Spare Time, Susan Currell explores how and why leisure became an object of such intense interest, concern, and surveillance during the Great Depression. As Americans experienced record high levels of unemployment, leisure was thought by reformers, policy makers, social scientists, physicians, labor unions, and even artists to be both a cause of and a solution to society's most entrenched ills. Of all the problems that faced America in the 1930s, only leisure seemed to offer a panacea for the rest. The problem centered on divided opinions over what constituted proper versus improper use of leisure time. On the one hand, sociologists and reformers excoriated as improper such leisure activities as gambling, loafing, and drinking. On the other, the Works Progress Administration and the newly professionalized recreation experts promoted proper leisure activities such as reading, sports, and arts and crafts. Such attention gave rise to new ideas about how Americans should spend their free time to better themselves and their nation. These ideas were propagated in social science publications and proliferated into the wider cultural sphere. Films, fiction, and radio also engaged with new ideas about leisure, more extensively than has previously been recognized. In examining this wide spectrum of opinion, Currell offers the first full-scale account of the fears and hopes surrounding leisure in the 1930s, one that will be an important addition to the cultural history of the period.

The Hollow Bone by Colleen Deatsman Pdf

Shamanism is the oldest living path of spirituality and healing, dating back tens of thousands of years, yet many people don't know what it is or are confused about the practice. In The Hollow Bone, shaman, teacher, and author Colleen Deatsman unveils the mysterious world of Shamanism as it is still practiced today all around the world. Deatsman explains that shamanism is not a religion with a doctrine, dogma, or holy book. Rather, it is a spirituality rooted in the idea that all matter has consciousness and that accessing the spirit in all things is part of what keeps the world in balance and individuals healed and whole. The Hollow Bone examines shamanism's history, its core beliefs, and how it is practiced all around the world. It includes a glossary of terms, resources for finding and working with shamanic teachers, and over two dozen rare photographs and illustrations showing the magnificent range of shamanic tools, rituals, practitioners, and traditions. This comprehensive introduction answers many frequently asked questions such as:What is shamanism? Where is it practiced? What are the beliefs and understandings inherent to shamanism?Who are the shamans? What do shamans do?Can anyone train to be a shaman?Where can I learn more?
